Art Center reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode were little Billy Mummy decapitate your head and inserts it on the spring of a jack-in-the-box then wishes, no demands, you go away into the corn field for being a 'bad man'. Meanwhile the adults are being ruled by a tyrannical child.
Whitney just died, so I might as well make another correlation. Blow was very prevalent in the record industry especially during the 1970's. What you're experiencing here is common place during a chemical psychosis. Even if you stop using blow, behavior patterns become ingrained in your psyche. Punk'n people all the time as sport becomes narcissistic in its nature.
Feelings can enrich one's life. But unless they are governed by reason, feelings are unruly and destructive beasts. People who are ruled by their feelings say stupid things, make stupid decisions and fail to learn from experience.
The child mental health crisis in America is the result of raising children who have lots of emotions but no emotional resilience. They're full of self-esteem but have little respect for others. This cannot lead to a satisfying life.
Since Roland is great at telling stories I'm going to tell a story too. Remember that song Jeremy by Pearl Jam that was written by Eddie Vedder? That song was not only based on a newspaper article but also Vedder's childhood experiences. Vedder witnessed a school shooting at Oak Crest Jr High, I was there too. Basically, this behavior is childish at its best and reminds of cruel little Jr hi kids. You guys are regressing to an infantile state, and kids are extremely cruel & selfish.
By the way, what I just said is fundamentally based on Buddhism. What did Roland tell you?......to beat on people till you feel like you have an ulcer? Follower of Buddhism my ass.
During the 1970's to 1990's people has this Pablo Escobar Chemical Psychosis I'm gonna beat on you because I'm high on life mentality. There's a whole generation of people who believe in believing how they feel, but often have their feelings betray them because it's not backed up by facts nor cognitive analytical skills. I think it's more important to remain calm and not be caught up with 'feelings' and even analyze what you feel. You live in a subjective reality, why be subjected by others?
You'll find that as we get more and more into a recession, people will be less and less willing to spend money, and less willing to put up with nonsense. If you don't practice what you preach, people will search out dichotomies and use them against you, and not even know or care that they are doing it. Roland would clearly look for your vulnerabilities, but any damn fool can do that...that's what I've been doing. I'm trying to figure you ways to better oneself, not to destroy people.
@mergone1 Just a person that is fed up with a predatory system that devaluates you as a person at a drop of a hat without any thought of consequences. I'm tired of sanctimonious bullshit. You live in a glass house you shouldn't throw any stones.
This really does remind me of Jim Jones, Temple of God, and David Berg, Children of God. Both were charismatic religious leaders who emotionally and sexually abused their followers. Both groups started in California, Children of God, in LA and Temple of God in San Franciso, Roland's hometown. It's like ACCD took the maniacal cult handbook and incorporated it into their curriculum.
Roland taught you everything has emotional connotations to it. That's too exhausting for me. I don't like being in perpetual emotional catharsis. I rather think in terms of binary conclusions on whether it works or not....not on it being inferior or it offends me. If you're an emotional thinker you're setting yourself up to eventually heavily medicating yourself to control your anxiety. A lot of you are already medicating yourselves with alcohol and over the counter pharmaceuticals.
Roland behaves this way in 1st term classes because he assumes you are all narcissistic arrogant trust fund baby brats. And you know what, you probably are. When in a room full of feral dogs an animal trainer is the best you can hope for. I can find this behavior just as easily in the public school system. Why your shit smells better is beyond me?
Basically, I'm sick of people shove'n shit in my head just because they're unhappy. If you believe in communication design, then you must agree we use other ways of communicating besides words....emotions like anger and symbolic gestures like mooning, both are symbols of contempt and malice. I read that loud and clear.
Actually, I dispute your conclusion that Roland is not bipolar. I'm aware that when Roland critiques he berates a student for up to 20 minutes going on all these tangents that somehow seem to relate to the subject matter on hand. Combine pressure speech with mood swings and you have a cocktail for bipolar disorder. People are often swooned by this behavior because of all the attention they're given.
After reading up on all the fucked up things Roland says and does to people, I truly understand how cults get started....by mindless unquestioning desperately insecure followers.
I think Roland's real philosophy is you cannot hold yourself to a certain doctrine but be aware of all of them. If you hold yourself to one path that path may guide you astray and lead to a dead end. That's why Roland contradicts himself, Buddhism, Destructivism, Pluralism, Sexism, Ageism, Authoritarianism, Passivisation, Spiritualism, Humanism, Consumerism ....I just don't believe you have the right to fuck over people as you travel your path, that's a path of narcissistic self indulgence.
Roland reminds me of a Catholic priest that would tell you are nothing but unorganized grabastic pieces of amphibian shit, then take a few choirboys from the pew and fuck them in the ass when ever he had the opportunity. Predatory behavior is for dysfunctional shitheads.
@ExileOC see this what I don't get, I'll go over the deep end and mention some fantastical hyperbole, but if some guy flashes his nutz/ass, swears like a sailor, asks his female students for a date in a middle of a 'lecture', makes you eat grass out of sheer spite....and gaud knows whatever else, that's considered perfectly acceptable behavior. You guys don't make sense. For some reason people believe authority equates to abusive entitlement.
@PNHassett I just think there is a difference between showing your ass or forcing people to eat grass vs. comments about fucking a choir boy that's all. Roland is Roland. I don't know what else to say. I won't make excuses for the guy but there is a silver lining in all of his antics that does in fact help you become a better designer. I do think, in this industry, I think a couple of tears are necessary.
@ExileOC I just feel you're being taught art like it's dog obedience training. Personally, I'd rather have a school appeal to my intellect then my visceral gut instincts, which is ironic since Roland constantly tells you to think then tells you how stupid you are for trying to think. That carrot on a stick while being throttled by a whip mentality just doesn't appeal to me. I'd rather be taught by trail and error then reward and punishment.
@PNHassett I understand your frustration with someone like Roland's method of teaching in this largely 1st term class, I myself felt that in a similar way at the time. However, even then I can confidently say that Roland Young and Jason Holley were the two best teachers I had at Art Center. I actually think it's okay to admit if you don't like his method for this class, but at the same time, it would be disingenuous to see how brilliant the guy really is if you're willing to see past the act.
@ahkim87 I realize this is 1st semester weed out the weak traditional behavior passed on from teachers such as Bill Moore, even if it is tradition I still don't agree with it, but when you ask female students during lectures for dates and they accept, when you moon students and there's a lawsuit, when you demand students to eat grass and they do, when you swear like a sailor to demonstrate your dominance....it's no longer an act. He's get'n away with stuff. An act is fantasy. It isn't fantasy.
@ahkim87 I repeated this before and I'll say it again, this reminds me of bipolar behavior and it runs in my family. You can deny it all you want but this is a mood disorder and Roland's contract was non renewed at ACCD because of it. The fact that you guys think this is normal probably reflects the fact your family and yourself display the same behavior. I'm very aware that Roland told you that you have to be fucked up to be an artist, meaning conflicted. Why do you think Roland told you that?
@PNHassett Except Roland isn't bipolar. Roland only acts this way for this class. If you had Roland for any other upper term class he's as normal as your average joe. If you actually have a conversation with the man outside of the class he's as normal as your average joe. And I never said this is normal behavior. There's no need to draw conclusions about anyone else who says that one simply needs to see past his caricature for Comm Design.
@ahkim87 Well, then you're playing games then. I don't believe learning is based on deception. I go right for the jugular and I don't let go......and if you're going to play games of deception and dominance, then I'm going to question why? Before you think this is inappropriate, Roland kept telling you as students to dig in like a designer which is essentially over turning stones and finding more reference/information. That's what I've been doing.
@PNHassett But he really isn't playing games either. He's at least half serious when he's doing his character in the way that a drill sergeant is. The majority of Comm Design classes are 18 yr olds who come from largely middle-class suburbia who might naively think that being a Designer is a cakewalk. But like I said already, it's okay to admit that his method of teaching this 1st term class is not your cup of tea.
@ahkim87 Oh hell. I don't mind saying 1st term class is not my cup of tea. I don't wanna invest time in 1st semester classes because it's sociopathic behavior.
@ahkim87 I don't think my behavior sociopathic....just exuberant OCD. Besides, Roland's behavior isn't all the uncommon. I try to avoid it as much as I can.
Our society is overloaded with intolerance, discrimination, craving, anger and despair. Young people are subject to stress, anxiety and frustration and acute pressure to succeed in their studies, work and social life. Depression and addiction have become a daily reality. Each one of us has the power to understand why this has happened, and to transform the situation in our daily life. There is a different way to live.......Thich Nhat Hanh
Roland claims to follow Buddhism. Don't delude yourself
I was RAISED; I didn't just grow up. I was taught to speak when I enter a room, say please & thank you, to have respect for my elders, lend a helping hand to those in need, hold the door for the person behind me, say excuse me when it's needed, & to love people for who they are, not for what you can get from them! I was also taught to treat people the way I want to be treated! If you were raised this way too, re-post this. sadly, many won't, because they weren't, and it shows!-
Basically, when you're being treated like an emotional toilet perpetually, you're being brainwashed. You're being controlled by catharsis rather then reason. Ambient abuse is a brainwashing technique meant to influence others. It has nothing to do with logic or reason, but more to do with influence and persuasion. If you find chinks in the armor hammer on it all you got, because that's what ambient abusers do to you.
A study at Stanford University has found that creative students shared more personality traits with bipolar patients than with a group of healthy people. You're being indoctrinated into a way of thinking.....it has nothing to do with the full spectrum that is available to you.
People think in order to be an artist you have to break the rules. What rules? You guys don't even know what the rules are let alone the Golden rules.
Look up Roland Young on Vimeo. This is a better example of Roland at work. Watch it all the way through. Then multiply it over a semester. This is how you train artists to demand greatness of themselves, not just slop.
Unlike many commenters on this page, I have had Roland Young as an instructor. I can speak personally of his ability to challenge and inspire students. He is consistent in that regard. I have known only a handful of geniuses and actually qualifies. Prior to attending Art Center, I had practiced as an attorney for 6 yrs., encountering many bright people, few of whom could do battle with Roland on the battlefield of ideas.
@CarmenRGonzalez you, being an attorney, can see the potential of jeopardizing the school to a potential lawsuit? I also found a URL where a former student stated he made the whole class eat grass: He was communicating to us how we are subservient to authority and took us outside of the classroom to this bed of grass. As we were talking, he told us “rip some grass off the ground.” We did. He then told us to “eat it.” No one budged. He then screamed “EAT IT”...google it.
Also keep in mind a petition was sent out amongst ACCD students for him to keep his job at ACCD. I'm assuming it's regarding what a prior commenter said: yeah, mooning a class IS sexual harassment, but was the class really feel sexually harassed? considering the fact that the only student who filed sexual harassment was from the same student he failed 2 times. From drunkjohnny 3 years ago.
I do agree that people think in very narrow minded self centered ways, and don't go beyond themselves to see the world outside. However, I don't agree you have to abuse the shit out of people to accomplish that. I remember the 'scared straight' philosophy of the 1970's.....it was a philosophy meant for blockheaded drug addicted teenagers and twenty-somethings.
Roland is probably one of a handful of teachers who will actually force students to think rather than mindlessly progress through their education. Most students will never have been as mentally challenged before. Unorthodox? Yes, but that is precisely what rivets the attention of homogenized college students. Notice in his rant how he takes larger events and ties it into the process of art creation, how the war should be prompting a provocative artistic response, not Orange County pablum.
Y'know Charles Schultz, Andy Warhol, Tim Burton, Daryl Hannah, Charles Dickinson, Alfred Hitchcock, Andy Kaufman and even more prominent people, like Bill Gates.....were all on the autistic/Aspergers scale of creativity. Meaning they didn't depend solely on visceral/emotional inspiration, but depended upon their analytical skills to comprehend the dichotomies of human behavior. I think genius is more then a show of force. Aspies/Aspergers pride themselves on their intellect, not gut instincts.
I've gone to several schools, and what I don't get is why do Art Teachers perpetuate ambient abuse? It clearly messes with a person's head and sense of self. I've grown up during the cultural revolution, lived next to barrios of racial tension, experienced domestic violence...I've been assaulted more then have assaulted. People are violent......and divorce rate is high because of this fact. I don't believe learning is based purely on gut instincts.
I'm fed up with sociopaths vehemently projecting their sociopolitical behavior on others and telling others they're sociopaths. You guys make no sense. By the way, narcissists and sociopaths are of the same psychological root. When I was growing up, I use to have art teachers not only psychologically analyze your work but you also. Well, right back at you numb nutz. Believe me, art teachers are fallible. Don't be taken in by their showmanship.
I think any 'artist' who behaves like this and claims to be a follower of Buddhism is full of shit. What are the 3 emotional poisons according to Buddhism?
What kills me is that you guys will accuse me of being 'evil' because I disagree with this teaching technique, yet you'll side with somebody that sexually harass his female students, berate students ad nauseam over conceptual ways of thinking - by the way I'm being conceptual - and ultimately ends up forcing his students to eat grass. Borderline Personality Disorder is known as the angry illness. Have you ever thought that maybe you guys are out of your fucking minds?
Ambient abuse is the fostering, propagation, and enhancement of an atmosphere of fear, intimidation, instability, unpredictability and irritation. There are no acts of traceable explicit abuse, nor any manipulative settings of control. Yet, the irksome feeling remains, a disagreeable foreboding, a premonition, a bad omen.
It is perpetrated by dropping subtle hints, by disorienting, by constant – and unnecessary – lying, by persistent doubting and demeaning.
Most people with bipolar and cluster b personality disorders depend upon corralling you with shame, fear and dominance. Well, if you've already gone through that shit in your childhood why should you go through that in your adult life? I believe the most intimidating thing you can do is educate yourself and debate the shit out it. Don't depend entirely upon your emotions, because a lot of times your emotions will fail you. I don't wanna be a victim of somebody else s design.
Numerous psychologists have been puzzled by the inactivity of crowds in urban centers when crimes occur in crowded places. Many have suggested bullying as one of the reason of this decline in emotional sensitivity and acceptance of violence as normal. When someone is bullied, it is not only the bully and victim who are becoming less sensitive to violence. In most cases, the friends and classmates of the bully and the victim accept the violence as normal
@Tinkyneko No, I get it. You guys depend upon your inarticulate feelings too much and expect the rest of us to 'feel' you're beyond comprehension....bullshit. Bunch of brats that want to fuck over people as much as possible. Well, I'm fucking back.
@Tinkyneko By the way, you got a couple of daughters....if anybody else was flashing their nuts at them you'd throw them in jail....or made them eat grass, you'd throw them in jail. It's hypocritical.
Also, the teachings of Roland Young, who made the entire class, including myself, eat grass on our first day of art school. He was communicating to us how we are subservient to authority and took us outside of the classroom to this bed of grass. As we were talking, he told us “rip some grass off the ground.” We did. He then told us to “eat it.” No one budged. He then screamed “EAT IT” and all of us shoved the grass blades into our mouths. Roland taught us the necessity of concept......
I think Art Center teaches you aggression and discipline, but.......
In a Neil Boyle video I posted, he stated Bill Moore, whom Roland imitates from Chouinard, ripped into a female student so much she went nude streaking mad in Griffith Park. She had a psychotic break.
If I don't understand this kind of mentality, then help me out. Don't get offended by it like a bunch of fussy babies.
BILL MOORE taught design. A very tough son of a bitch. His criticisms were scathing and ruthless, some students left the class in tears. There was an apocryphal story in the halls that one time he had disliked someone's work so much he burned it off the wall. Years later I was reminiscing about Chouinard with Ed Ruscha and he said that he was the culprit, something with old cigarette butts. If you got past Moore you knew design.
I've seen this act before. Jerry Rubins and Bill Hicks use to pull stunts off like this all the time. Roland Young is a hack. You're being taught old school. Roland is right, you're sheep. Bahahahahhaahaha.
I find that when you work in a collaborative environment, and you encounter a person who behaves like this.....it makes the workplace hell. You can get away with this behavior on 'projects' that last 6 months to a year....but if you're working in a collaborative environment that lasts for more then a year, this kind of behavior can become demoralizing and demeaning. Artists can behave like this because they have transitory jobs...but you'll never establish roots or stability.
You guys tell me he's the best, but you never tell why's he's the best. Cult followers always say how fantastic their leader is, but always seem to avoid talking about the narcissistic rages, emotional and sexual abuse that happened while they celebrated their 'leader'. If you really what to celebrate his 'great' instruction, tell people what he taught you...otherwise, it seems to me you get off on somebody emotionally jerking you off.
But in all honesty, all he wants them to do is accept his view of the world as the only view. He THINKS he isn't narrow minded. But in fact he very much is. Just in his own way.
Had several professors like this.
But then again...I don't know what the students are producing. For all I know it could very well be 'crap'.
What I find odd is when there's a genuine lack of understanding, people would rather get upset and become punitive in their behavior rather then just simply explain.
The ideals and goals of a cult's belief system are such as to give the cult an inherent psychological advantage over its critics and doubters, because on the one hand the cult's ideals are attractive and inspiring, while on the other hand they are non-falsifiable - they can never be shown to be false or deluded, and indeed it can seem negative and reactionary even to question them.
If you think this type of teaching makes you think like a super human, you're fucking wrong, makes you think like a little fucking kid. You become a blockhead with insurmountable personality disorders. You're perpetuating childlike behaviors....that's why people are messed up. I know Roland told you have to be fucked up to be an artist....who says? More brainwashing bullshit.
I don't like a lot of ACCD graduates because you guys seem to believe in Corporal Punishment, Emotional Blackmail and Perfectionism and all sorts of insidious dichotomies in human behavior that you wouldn't dare inflict upon those you actually cared about.....assuming you actually know how to care about somebody? Bunch of Cold Blooded Lizard People. I believe art is a trade that can be actually taught without resorting to some form of emotional terrorism, resorting to high school sociology.
I think the advertising industry reinforces this kind of behavior. They use many tactics to influence buying behavior. What I notice often is mirroring cluster B personality traits, or pandering to them, or combination. Why? Because many of these type of individuals have impulse control problems, money. When you use emotional tactics you pander towards a certain clientele. You're assuming that shame, envy and fear are what motivate 'everybody'.
When I encounter a narcissist, they always seem to emote their personal problems onto people and expect you to sympathize with them, but if you tell them your personal problems they'll look at you like why are you telling me this or even as being weak and pathetic. It's like they have no boundaries, yet they expect you to maintain your boundaries. You're their emotional toilet to fulfill their needs. They have to protect their superhuman image at all times. Really is like dealing with a child
I like how Roland states it's your job to make people like you and believe in you, then goes out of his way to piss people off. It's just absolute bizarro world.
lololololol fuck that old prick. hes a fucking moron and you ppl at fucking artsy center worship him like some fucking deity. fuck you shit graphic design and ad majors. you have no future whatsoever. this field is already saturated with plenty of lazy bums like you who are too dumb to study engineering or accounting. maybe the automobile and industrial design majors have a chance but not you all. good luck with your worthless, miserable lives!
@xsilentrainx I see no difference between your style of lecturing and Roland's. You should be teaching at Art Center and tell those punks what's it all about. That's about as much respect as those kids deserve since all they understand is disdain and lack decorum and tact......however, the internet is exploding. Graphic designers and advertise majors can always make web pages, wooohoo.
As a society we use hate at a motivator in order to achieve conformity. When a person tries to alienate you it's because they are stating you are not like me, therefore you are against me....which is a wild irrational conclusion to make.
I don't believe in pulling tricks on people. I thought art was about keeping it simple? Ya wanna blow people away, just examine everything like a bug and dissect it. A lot of times you'll discover people don't make a whole lot of sense.
When you were a child, did you: * Experience inconsistent discipline? Was it okay to do something one day and then be punished for doing that same thing another day? * Have a parent who started major projects only to abandon them after becoming depressed? Did your parent have high-energy times followed by days where they couldn’t get out of bed? * Wonder what kind of mood your parent would be in when you came home?
People are violent and they'll use any excuse to be so.....like call you pussey, or use profanity or moon you.....cluster B personality disorders. Cluster B's will talk about the whoas of the world and how unjust everything is and be just as destructive as those they complain about upon those that are closest to them. If you can't see the hypocrisy it's probably because you have a Cluster B Personality Disorder.
Sometimes, when we are discouraged by a difficult situation, anger does seem helpful, appearing to bring more energy, confidence and determination. And while it is true that anger brings extra energy, it eclipses the best part of our brain: its rationality. So the energy of anger is almost always unreliable. It can cau...se an immense amount of destructive, unfortunate behavior. Dalai Lama
By the way Roland says he follows Buddhist teachings.
I'm more inclined to the philosophy of 'say it like it is' rather then 'you have to be cruel to be kind'. I just feel he bullied you guys to the point that you're not objective, which in turn causes you not to question what you're being taught. Visceral thinking is based on how you feel, not on deduction of reason. Besides, sometimes you can't compete against certain physiological manifestations. Pathology does not reason, it only wants to control and conquer.
Amen lol! A quote I saw today was from Mahatma Ghandi which said something like 'I will not allow people with dirty feet to walk through my mind" Perfect!
@Gresslette - What Roland is doing is taking advantage of your sense of courtesy and decorum. This is what phone solicitors do or pushy sales persons do behind the counter. They use every emotional manipulative trick they can think of to goad and haze you with pressure speech to push buttons of envy, inferiority, and mostly fear. When you deal with a predator and an overachieving soul sucking jerk, best to leave all decorum aside. They lack compassion, but encompass domination. It's reckless.
Why wasn't this guy fired? His front bits were even exposed - there are students sitting either side of where the camera is who would have seen something. Highly inappropriate. What an arrogant narcissistic assehole! (literally...) PN Hassett you talk alot of sense - I've experienced teachers like that and they mess with students heads. Namaste.
@Gresslette - .yeah, mooning a class IS sexual harassment, but was the class really feel sexually harassed? considering the fact that the only student who filed sexual harassment was from the same student he failed 2 times. From drunkjohnny 3 years ago.
What I'm trying to do is goad ACCD alumni into justifying what he taught instead of telling me what a bad ass he was. They never seem to divulge what he instructed. They all seem more awe struck by his personality. His contract non renewed.
@PNHassett - Roland was hired at Academy of Arts in San Francisco by one of his former colleagues that worked at RCA Records, Mary Scott who is a department head at the school. Now Roland has maneuvered his way at the school in a chairperson seat in the graphic design department at that school. Having a cluster b personality disorder has it's advantages....certainly does reek a lot of havoc.
The above video at Roland's former school Art Center College of Design, which he fails to mention now.
@PNHassett@PNHassett He taught Communication Design 1, Graphics 1, Advertising 3, and TV Advertising. He also did one Sponsor Project that I can remember.
To sum up what he taught is pretty hard to do, in the same way to sum up who he was as a designer is pretty hard. I think he did it best when he spoke at the "Bad Boys of Graphic Design" and didn't say a word but simply let a collage of his entire body of work speak for him.
With that said??? What did Roland teach??? Look at ever ad made by a graduate of Art Center in the past 20 years, which is much of what fills the award annuals, and you have what Roland taught.
For me it's not so much about the class 'feeling' that they were sexually harassed - I guess the best example to illustrate my view is that the shame of many people who were sexually abused as kids comes from the fact that at the time they felt like they enjoyed it & it didn't always feel like expoitation. But this doesn't make what happened to them ok. Same here as far as I'm concerned. His behaviour is gross professional misconduct. (I'm a tutor myself) ;)
I've seen it over and over again, even if you achieve excellence people will still treat you like shit. So why do you have to suck up to bastards like this for? Roland's philosophy is rooted in narcissism. He states that in order for people to appreciate what you do that they have to want what you have, and yet at the same time you have to make them believe you know more them then they know about themselves. It's a philosophy based on appeasing the Corporate World to influence the masses.
British Petroleum use to state they are environmentally friendly. Now they're saying they're only here to help, after they polluted entire coastline and ecosystem. Enron had a slogan of "Ask Why?".....which is ironic since that was a corporation full of secrets and cluster B personality disorders. Basically, you advertising majors are taught to feed the public shit to make business look like human beings when actually they behave like machines. Narcissists act like mean self centered machines.
I hate digging through a pile of shit just to get a nugget of truth. This elitist hazing oligarchy mentality really makes me fed up. I wouldn't trust a graphic designer to teach art. They think too much from the 'gut'. Too much visceral mumbo jumbo and not enough factual information....plus I wouldn't trust anybody that was part of the 1960's to 1970's generation. They took too many drugs.
@PNHassett, read a lot of your comments. It is ultimately inconsequential who Roland was or is. It is who you are being that matters. The fact that you have put this much effort into all of your comments is a testament to the power you have allowed him to have over you. Your points are valid, and you have good reason hold your point of view. However, the negativity, fear, and insecurity is yours to own. Roland is Roland. You have learned something.
@clevername333 I had an instructor who graduated from Art Center take offense to my questioning and behavior, made me feel as though I don't have a right to my perceptions. Then the instructor would turn it all around and praise Roland Young. My behavior is offensive, yet he isn't? It's bizarro world. I believe behavior is deduced by deductive reasoning not by gut reactions alone. If you believe one should rule over others based on visceral thinking, read 'Lord of the Flies'..
@PNHassett, Ohhh, it makes sense. You do not even go to ArtCenter. It was a tough education for sure, and that level of training is not for everyone. I graduated from ACCD 10 years ago, and it took me quite a while to recover. However, the skills I learned allowed me to go into a 500 million dollar company at the age of 26 years old, and make an enormous positive impact on both the brand, but also the bottom line of the company. I would not have been able to do the training of this school.
@PNHassett, further more, look closely at the words you wrote. For someone who believes in rational behavior, you are certainly focused on your own feelings. At ArtCenter, one learns early on in this education to let go of the emotional connection between the ideas you express and the feedback you get. It is a process of learning, and nothing is personal. At the end of the day, you are going into commercial art. It is business. So quit whining about the "he said she said." It is petty.
@PNHassett, are you waiting to get some validation on that 3 headed dragon you are animating?
I just re-listened to this video. Roland, was creating a space to open up the minds of a bunch of kids who want to be artists. Great art, great communication does not come from the status quo. His words only occurs to you as a pile of shit because that is all you are prepared to see. Look at your 3 headed dragon. Roland would laugh at your unoriginal orange county shit.
I met Roland on a few occasions during my tour of duty in ArtCenter. This guy worked relentlessly to open people's minds beyond their own narrow perceptions of what art or even life is about.
Now 10 years later, I now find myself teaching design classes in Hong Kong. It is a challenging thing to teach design. Getting these kids to see past their backyard and into the greater world has been an interesting challenge. I am usually exhausted after each class. Roland had a lot of energy......
This guy worked relentlessly to open people's minds beyond their own narrow perceptions of what art or even life is about.
Well, that's interesting statement. Were you told what life is all about? I mean it seems when Roland treats people that recklessly it seems to be a philosophy rooted in narcissism. There's a different mindset. I'm not trying to validate, I'm trying to understand. I draw like this pnhassett dot blogspot dot com.
Relationship between teacher and students can become almost cultic. Narcissistically vulnerable students idealize teacher as powerful, brilliant, and historically important. “Interaction with the ideal confirms devotee’s own personal worth, indicating that he or she deserves to be connected with someone who has extraordinary powers. The leader provides emotional gratification and the promise of personal transformation, in return for unquestioning subordination and admiration from the devotee.
Y'know what happens when you become narcissistic? You become verbally abusive. Emotionally manipulative. You'll say anything to support your agenda, a lot of which are lies. You'll cloud facts with unsupported belief systems. You'll pit people against one another. You'll become predatory in your behavior and seek to destroy those who you consider weak and inferior. You won't teach people. You'll just become a pseudo elitist whose only concern is to prove your superiority. Narcissism, it's sick.
I know Roland is trying to obliterate the Suburban Sprawl Neighborhood Stepford Mind Positive Willful Ignorance Way of Thinking, but at the same time I think it's cruel and tortuous to keep people guessing and use hazing tactics akin to brainwashing. Say it like it is, but I think it's best to say it without imposing social control.
I'm trying to determine the difference between Mel Gibson's rants and Roland's, both of whom are Art Directors. I think LA sucks the soul out of you and turns you into a raving maniac.
I think Roland is pulling some Stanley Milgram and Solomon Asch experiments on his conformity minded students. That's why he expresses disdain for being academic. He wants you to be a mindless shill and accept every word he says without question, if you have no point of reference you will not question, yet at the same time he wants you to go beyond yourself? I don't see how you can do that if you don't research which is what academia encourages? Contradictions erodes deductive thinking.
The human, social and economic cost of our lack of mutual respect is enormous. Consider the wasted emotional energy, the destruction of confidence and creativity, and the alienation that results from it. Anxious and undermined, we hand on humiliation to others, then deplore the dissolution of social bonds. The industries that surround us will do nothing to reverse this trend. They make their money and find their audiences by appealing to our egos.
I find that if you get offended by what I'm saying then you're feeling and not thinking. If you think you can reply without contempt and malice, then you are thinking. If you can explain to me why a visceral belief system is superior to a cognitive one, then you've opened a door to me that I've never understood. I've encountered domestic violence, drug abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse.....all of which are meant to terrorize a person. Convince them they are hopeless. What good is that?
The real reason Roland tries to shock you is because your parents and your peers had oppressive mood swings meant to control you and make you subservient. He's trying to shack you out of your Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and make you realize the schlock you're designing is really meant to appease your oppressors and really has nothing to do with your creativity. Your goal should be to seek the truth, and expose that truth as much as possible. Design an expression of our knowing.
I think when you discuss 'communication design' in this manner you turn conceptual thinking into a pissing contest rather then fluid connections in deductive reasoning. If the point of this is to get rid of the lazy and uncreative, well that's fine, but there are other ways of fluid thinking other then just honing in on your inner core of contempt and angst.......besides, people hate assholes.
PNH I hear you bout Encinitas. This town seems to have seen a lot better days cultral-wise before. I feel a different vibe around the old coastal areas than the newly developed inner regions, where I lived.
@udubale Here's my take with Roland, he's teaching you to design based on how you feel, and what you feel is righteous and true. Well, Roland flashed his ass and got kicked out for sexual harassment. So, what you feel is not necessarily righteous. I feel, and yes if Roland can base his thoughts on feelings so can I, that thoughts based on feelings are only a fraction of the equation. If thoughts are based on emotions, you become predatory in your behavior, cluster B personality disorder.
If you become predatory, then you're no different then those pod people I've discussed earlier. I'm trying to determine if Roland is discussing predatory social environments and economics? If that's the case, most likely I'm not suited for it.......I don't want to get into advertisement and sell you shit by making you feel envious and feeling inadequate. Roland is great at pounding you with guilt trips, but that's what advertising is all about....pounding you with quilt trips.
drunkjohnny says Roland is putting on an act......no, this behavior is called splitting and it's common behavior behind closed doors. People often have a public image and a private image. This kind of behavior is indicative to being comfortable behind closed doors.
I don't know why people are accepting of mood disorders? I think art is more of a cognitive process of interpreting how you feel, instead of feeling how you think. Bad enough you demean at an intellectual level, then beat on yourself at a primal almost masochistic level. I've listened to people swear like a sailor with much aggressive domination all my life. It seems like a digression in thinking, having your feelings be your primal drive in interpreting. I don't wanna have mood disorders.
Genius and madness are only tangentially related. A genius makes connections which no one else can see which are yet profoundly true and clear. A lunatic makes connections which no one else can see because they aren't there and aren't true. The only similarity is the will to understand... which all intelligent humans share. An artist perceives reality with force and clarity. A lunatic only takes in glimpses of reality through their warped perspective.
I think people who behave in this manner are nihilists. Bunch of sinister phucks. We're in a recession because egoism went a muck. Maybe you nihilists should think about that......who gives a crap about gay football players. The marauding behavior of the Celtics are alive and well.
I believe all this meandering thinking that I sputter out is exactly what Roland tries to encourage, even if he disagrees with it.
Disney supported the school, he discovered it was the only place to upgrade his animators. Later he took the remnants of Chouinard and made it into Cal Arts in Valencia but he died before his vision of the school could be realized. Now CalArts is some kind of elitist art factory which really does a head job on its graduates, they come out of there arrogant and convinced there is only one kind of cutting edge thing worth doing in life, I feel sorry for them.
Basically, I don't want to relive my parental or grade school Lord of the Flies relationships.
If I'm spending a lot of money for a class, I want to be told what I did wrong or right and go on to the next project, with as little emotional retardation as possible. I find that if you try to break people emotionally you end up with broken people.
As far as this being like the real world, it is, if you like hanging around alcoholics, sociopaths, narcissists, sadists, histrionic personalities...
Actually, the only people that think this is acceptable behavior are the alcoholics, sociopaths, narcissists, sadists, histrionic personalities............In a computer, if you feed it junk data it'll spit out junk data. Crazy in, crazy out.

PNHassett 2 months ago

PNHassett 3 months ago
Basically, I'm sick of people shove'n shit in my head just because they're unhappy. If you believe in communication design, then you must agree we use other ways of communicating besides words....emotions like anger and symbolic gestures like mooning, both are symbols of contempt and malice. I read that loud and clear.
PNHassett 3 months ago
Actually, I dispute your conclusion that Roland is not bipolar. I'm aware that when Roland critiques he berates a student for up to 20 minutes going on all these tangents that somehow seem to relate to the subject matter on hand. Combine pressure speech with mood swings and you have a cocktail for bipolar disorder. People are often swooned by this behavior because of all the attention they're given.

PNHassett 5 months ago
@PNHassett I just think there is a difference between showing your ass or forcing people to eat grass vs. comments about fucking a choir boy that's all. Roland is Roland. I don't know what else to say. I won't make excuses for the guy but there is a silver lining in all of his antics that does in fact help you become a better designer. I do think, in this industry, I think a couple of tears are necessary.
ExileOC 5 months ago
@ExileOC I just feel you're being taught art like it's dog obedience training. Personally, I'd rather have a school appeal to my intellect then my visceral gut instincts, which is ironic since Roland constantly tells you to think then tells you how stupid you are for trying to think. That carrot on a stick while being throttled by a whip mentality just doesn't appeal to me. I'd rather be taught by trail and error then reward and punishment.
PNHassett 5 months ago
@PNHassett I understand your frustration with someone like Roland's method of teaching in this largely 1st term class, I myself felt that in a similar way at the time. However, even then I can confidently say that Roland Young and Jason Holley were the two best teachers I had at Art Center. I actually think it's okay to admit if you don't like his method for this class, but at the same time, it would be disingenuous to see how brilliant the guy really is if you're willing to see past the act.
ahkim87 3 months ago
@ahkim87 I realize this is 1st semester weed out the weak traditional behavior passed on from teachers such as Bill Moore, even if it is tradition I still don't agree with it, but when you ask female students during lectures for dates and they accept, when you moon students and there's a lawsuit, when you demand students to eat grass and they do, when you swear like a sailor to demonstrate your dominance....it's no longer an act. He's get'n away with stuff. An act is fantasy. It isn't fantasy.
PNHassett 3 months ago
@ahkim87 I repeated this before and I'll say it again, this reminds me of bipolar behavior and it runs in my family. You can deny it all you want but this is a mood disorder and Roland's contract was non renewed at ACCD because of it. The fact that you guys think this is normal probably reflects the fact your family and yourself display the same behavior. I'm very aware that Roland told you that you have to be fucked up to be an artist, meaning conflicted. Why do you think Roland told you that?
PNHassett 3 months ago
@PNHassett Except Roland isn't bipolar. Roland only acts this way for this class. If you had Roland for any other upper term class he's as normal as your average joe. If you actually have a conversation with the man outside of the class he's as normal as your average joe. And I never said this is normal behavior. There's no need to draw conclusions about anyone else who says that one simply needs to see past his caricature for Comm Design.
ahkim87 3 months ago
@ahkim87 Well, then you're playing games then. I don't believe learning is based on deception. I go right for the jugular and I don't let go......and if you're going to play games of deception and dominance, then I'm going to question why? Before you think this is inappropriate, Roland kept telling you as students to dig in like a designer which is essentially over turning stones and finding more reference/information. That's what I've been doing.
PNHassett 3 months ago
@PNHassett But he really isn't playing games either. He's at least half serious when he's doing his character in the way that a drill sergeant is. The majority of Comm Design classes are 18 yr olds who come from largely middle-class suburbia who might naively think that being a Designer is a cakewalk. But like I said already, it's okay to admit that his method of teaching this 1st term class is not your cup of tea.
ahkim87 3 months ago
@ahkim87 Oh hell. I don't mind saying 1st term class is not my cup of tea. I don't wanna invest time in 1st semester classes because it's sociopathic behavior.

PNHassett 8 months ago
Roland is probably one of a handful of teachers who will actually force students to think rather than mindlessly progress through their education. Most students will never have been as mentally challenged before. Unorthodox? Yes, but that is precisely what rivets the attention of homogenized college students. Notice in his rant how he takes larger events and ties it into the process of art creation, how the war should be prompting a provocative artistic response, not Orange County pablum.
CarmenRGonzalez 8 months ago
Y'know Charles Schultz, Andy Warhol, Tim Burton, Daryl Hannah, Charles Dickinson, Alfred Hitchcock, Andy Kaufman and even more prominent people, like Bill Gates.....were all on the autistic/Aspergers scale of creativity. Meaning they didn't depend solely on visceral/emotional inspiration, but depended upon their analytical skills to comprehend the dichotomies of human behavior. I think genius is more then a show of force. Aspies/Aspergers pride themselves on their intellect, not gut instincts.
PNHassett 8 months ago
I've gone to several schools, and what I don't get is why do Art Teachers perpetuate ambient abuse? It clearly messes with a person's head and sense of self. I've grown up during the cultural revolution, lived next to barrios of racial tension, experienced domestic violence...I've been assaulted more then have assaulted. People are violent......and divorce rate is high because of this fact. I don't believe learning is based purely on gut instincts.

But in all honesty, all he wants them to do is accept his view of the world as the only view. He THINKS he isn't narrow minded. But in fact he very much is. Just in his own way.

Did your parent have high-energy times followed by days where they couldn’t get out of bed? * Wonder what kind of mood your parent would be in when you came home?

Sometimes, when we are discouraged by a difficult situation, anger does seem helpful, appearing to bring more energy, confidence and determination. And while it is true that anger brings extra energy, it eclipses the best part of our brain: its rationality. So the energy of anger is almost always unreliable. It can cau...se an immense amount of destructive, unfortunate behavior. Dalai Lama

@PNHassett @PNHassett He taught Communication Design 1, Graphics 1, Advertising 3, and TV Advertising.

@PNHassett

I would not have been able to do the training of this school.
clevername333 11 months ago
@PNHassett, further more, look closely at the words you wrote. For someone who believes in rational behavior, you are certainly focused on your own feelings. At ArtCenter, one learns early on in this education to let go of the emotional connection between the ideas you express and the feedback you get. It is a process of learning, and nothing is personal. At the end of the day, you are going into commercial art. It is business. So quit whining about the "he said she said." It is petty.

Well, Roland has said you have to be conflicted in order to be an artist.
PNHassett 1 year ago
I think Roland is pulling some Stanley Milgram and Solomon Asch experiments on his conformity minded students. That's why he expresses disdain for being academic. He wants you to be a mindless shill and accept every word he says without question, if you have no point of reference you will not question, yet at the same time he wants you to go beyond yourself? I don't see how you can do that if you don't research which is what academia encourages? Contradictions erodes deductive thinking.

Roger character from 'Lord of the Flies'.?
The human, social and economic cost of our lack of mutual respect is enormous. Consider the wasted emotional energy, the destruction of confidence and creativity, and the alienation that results from it. Anxious and undermined, we hand on humiliation to others, then deplore the dissolution of social bonds. The industries that surround us will do nothing to reverse this trend. They make their money and find their audiences by appealing to our egos.
PNHassett 1 year ago
I find that if you get offended by what I'm saying then you're feeling and not thinking. If you think you can reply without contempt and malice, then you are thinking. If you can explain to me why a visceral belief system is superior to a cognitive one, then you've opened a door to me that I've never understood. I've encountered domestic violence, drug abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse.....all of which are meant to terrorize a person. Convince them they are hopeless. What good is that?
PNHassett 1 year ago
The real reason Roland tries to shock you is because your parents and your peers had oppressive mood swings meant to control you and make you subservient. He's trying to shack you out of your Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and make you realize the schlock you're designing is really meant to appease your oppressors and really has nothing to do with your creativity. Your goal should be to seek the truth, and expose that truth as much as possible. Design an expression of our knowing.
PNHassett 1 year ago
I think when you discuss 'communication design' in this manner you turn conceptual thinking into a pissing contest rather then fluid connections in deductive reasoning. If the point of this is to get rid of the lazy and uncreative, well that's fine, but there are other ways of fluid thinking other then just honing in on your inner core of contempt and angst.......besides, people hate assholes.

PNHassett 1 year ago
