The Shamisen looks nothing like a lute....The Biwa is a lute

@XRancourX yeah you are thinking of it by visual reference not by definition. That`s like saying a mercedes is not a car because it doesn`t look like a jeep. The european lute looks similar to a biwa but the definition of lute is not restricted to that teardrop shape. Shamisen is a spike lute. look up lute info on any music instrument site . spike lutes refer to the spike through the middle of the body. I think Kamancha is another example.
