RIP Dobie Gray love this Soulful version on this tune better than Elvis's Pop version wished the maker of the Video would have added more photos of Dobie Gray though but a very nice tune
Don't know if this has been made public elsewhere. I happened to be in Combine Music's old 'shack' when Bob Beckham was bawling out Kristofferson for writing, and giving away, the release to this beautiful country song. No one else could write the line, 'Looking back and longing for the freedom of my chains' etc. but Kris.. But what a wonderful song Tom Jans began. And Dobie brought to it the achingly beautiful soul of the South.
What a beautiful song, it has always touched my heart and I deeply feel the sentiment it expresses. RIP Dobie, you've blessed so many with your great songs and someday we will sing together in heaven.
Beautiful song ! When you hear ANY version that touches you (of any song) do you really care if the person "stole" it or if they are black, white, green, purple--- blah-blah-blah!! Really people--get over your ridiculous, petty negativity and simply ENJOY!!
blairf450, Unlike TheNIgel68, who was quite nice in replying to your comment on Elvis' version of this song, I don't respect your opinion at all. Moreover, you have zero notion of what you're talking about., nor will you EVER have a chance in a million to debate me on this, or any other issue for that matter.
blairf450, I respect your opinion. it is very easy to sit back and knock a person that you know you will never ever be. Elvis was not perfect , but to millions of people he was a 20th century Icon and a very talented man and a one off, and if you ever reached the heights he did how would you have handled it. Like him or not, please respect him for what he was.
The music taste is a personal opinion. No one needs to try to persuade or dissuade others on pure taste of the arts. This is not science everyone is entitled to opinion. So, if the opinion is not rather a pleasant one to share, then keep it in.
@ IAMGODLIKE77. Ha ha. Elvis was haunded by the demons of his self inflicted drug addiction and monster ego. He thought he was god-like,too. He was tortured about the fact that he was a fat burnout at the end of his rope. Poor guy. Livin in mansions and having his every little whim at his fingertips.
@ 9erfandex Could not have said it better myself ! Dobie Gray's voice is a superbly controlled instrument,. Comparisons should not be made. I have a few of his albums. !!
There is this guy I like really like! One problem though he is bisexual. I would love to play this song to him. Not that it would change anything but just maybe it will get him thinking.
What is the point of arguing and comparing one artist against another. If you'd prefer listening to Elvis, go and listen to Elvis. I don't really understand Elvis worship anyway. It all seems a bit sick to me to worship a cabaret singer as a God. There is no such thing as God anyway.
thanks, zigg..love this version...I think we all have someone we wish we could go back and gather up, and say we had it going and let is slip away...looking back, and longing for the freedom of my chains...
One song i could say i really enjoy and love and it reminds me of someone who i loved very much and is no more in this world but will always be in my heart until i die and that is none other than Richard who made me feel special and important and where ever you may be hope you know i still love you very much...... from your sweet
k if you anything about anything, and especialy true with elvis. Blacks still werent marketable back then. so they would sell their songs to white artists, and especialy elvis. so this guy actually wrote this song, but bc he is black and couldnt have sold this song on his own, he had to sell it to? who else but elvis. everyone knows this happened.
White artists "stole them"? Did Fats Domino steal "Blueberry Hill" in 1956, a song introduced in 1940 by Gene Autry? Did The Platters in 1956 steal Glenn Miller's 1939 hit "My Prayer"? White artists recorded songs written by blacks just like black artists recorded songs written by whites. Ask Whitney Houston, who covered Dolly Parton's composition "I Will Always Love You." Take off the racial blinders and do some research before making any other ignorant assumptions.
"Loving Arms" was written by a white guy, Tom Jans, and introduced in 1973 by Dobie Gray, who recorded the biggest hit version of it to date. A smaller hit cover version was cut by Kris Kristofferson & Rita Collidge in 1974. Elvis' recording was not a hit but an LP track. Blacks did not "sell" songs to white artists; if ANY artist recorded a song written by ANY composer the composer earned a royalty. And blacks weren't marketable? Tell that to Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, etc..
You know this song really is awesome and it was a wonderful video, as far as the sound went for such a old song I totally give this a thunbs up!! Dixie Chicks did a amazing job on this and when I downloaded Elvis's version I was like who oringanlly did this so search and found that Dobie Gray did, awesome!!
Thank u ziggen ! I discovered this song on a vinal "Dynamic Sounds 1974" record I bought at a garage sale. Best 2 bucks I ever spent ! Classic lyrics+ voice !
>>> The line " if I could hold you now" , "just for a while turn back the hands of time", "if I could hold you now" just reminds me of of a past real true love, I lost. And how deep that love really was.
Shame we really dont reconize when we have it and tend to lose that kind of deep love serenity. ;-(
I have just been treated to many renditions of this song,(from the King himself to the Dixie Chicks, and Kristofferson R.Coolidge) and they were all good! But, no by God body could touch Dobie Gray!
