  • "Mr Dobie Gray" YES Elivs NOT

  • RIP Dobie Gray love this Soulful version on this tune better than Elvis's Pop version wished the maker of the Video would have added more photos of Dobie Gray though but a very nice tune

  • Calm the crystal waters run

Above the moon eclipse the sun

    And so much as a sound there's none;

    TributeToDobyGray_www.starborne@facebook.com

  • Rest in peace, Dr. Gray. Keep singin to em angels on up there an God too.

  • anybody got ...Cadoo queen ? -can't find it..

  • only a Soul Brother, could do Justice to this song,Beautiful....

  • Don't know if this has been made public elsewhere. I happened to be in Combine Music's old 'shack' when Bob Beckham was bawling out Kristofferson for writing, and giving away, the release to this beautiful country song. No one else could write the line, 'Looking back and longing for the freedom of my chains' etc. but Kris.. But what a wonderful song Tom Jans began. And Dobie brought to it the achingly beautiful soul of the South.

  • What a beautiful song, sung by a beautiful man.

Dobie was a gift from the heavens.

    RIP Dobie.

  • What a beautiful song, it has always touched my heart and I deeply feel the sentiment it expresses. RIP Dobie, you've blessed so many with your great songs and someday we will sing together in heaven.

  • Beautiful song ! When you hear ANY version that touches you (of any song) do you really care if the person "stole" it or if they are black, white, green, purple--- blah-blah-blah!! Really people--get over your ridiculous, petty negativity and simply ENJOY!!

  • beautiful song...RIP Dobie. You made me appreciate music at a young age & it has always (and always will) remain a part of who I am! Godspeed...

  • RIP

  • Go rest softly on that .mountain

  • RIP Dobie...your music has been in my heart since I was a little girl...this song says it all

  • RIP Dobie......you are a true inspiration

  • RIP Dobie Gray

  • Hearing that we just lost this giant. RIP Mr. Gray. Thanks for this and so many other great songs.

  • wow...simply the best Songs Ever!!

  • This song has one of the best bridges ever written.

  • blairf450, Unlike TheNIgel68, who was quite nice in replying to your comment on Elvis' version of this song, I don't respect your opinion at all. Moreover, you have zero notion of what you're talking about., nor will you EVER have a chance in a million to debate me on this, or any other issue for that matter.

  • still rocking the country keep it up.

  • Another great version by this great singer what a terrific voice

Where is he now & does he stll make records??

  • such a beautiful song... I keep listening to it on and on and can´t stop crying...

"If you could hear me now

    Singing somewhere

    Through a lonely night

    Dreaming of the arms

    That held me tight

If you could only hear me now"

  • whow!whow! This song made me crazy in early years of 2000 it stl does 2day.U go Dobie!u the best....

  • meh.

  • elvis presley version is very good

  • This is a lovely song, well sung - accept it!

  • blairf450, I respect your opinion. it is very easy to sit back and knock a person that you know you will never ever be. Elvis was not perfect , but to millions of people he was a 20th century Icon and a very talented man and a one off, and if you ever reached the heights he did how would you have handled it. Like him or not, please respect him for what he was.

  • This song does not need a "best singer",the song is so beautiful and all who perform it do a wonderful job.

  • nobody does it better

  • Great version, but Millie Jackson's will never be bettered...

  • so smooth--so fluid---you can hear the sadness of regretting his decision of so long ago.

  • @Undetermined1986 what do you mean?

  • Comment removed

  • @musicbox193 Exactly, longoing for the freedom of the chains, longing for being woithout the chains so that you are free

  • The music taste is a personal opinion. No one needs to try to persuade or dissuade others on pure taste of the arts. This is not science everyone is entitled to opinion. So, if the opinion is not rather a pleasant one to share, then keep it in.

  • elvis does a great job on this song .this song was made for dobie.

  • @ IAMGODLIKE77. Ha ha. Elvis was haunded by the demons of his self inflicted drug addiction and monster ego. He thought he was god-like,too. He was tortured about the fact that he was a fat burnout at the end of his rope. Poor guy. Livin in mansions and having his every little whim at his fingertips.

  • @ 9erfandex Could not have said it better myself ! Dobie Gray's voice is a superbly controlled instrument,. Comparisons should not be made. I have a few of his albums. !!

  • @ IAMGODLIKE77......you must be taking some light stuff to come up with a comment like Elvis Presley Version is better than Dobie Gray......

I was gonna say shut your mouth instead I will ask you to use your ears as twicw as u use u one mouth amigo..............

  • There is this guy I like really like! One problem though he is bisexual. I would love to play this song to him. Not that it would change anything but just maybe it will get him thinking.

  • Awesome-thank you !

  • ziggenpuss69

thank you so much for sharing this music from the heart

    right to the heart

    Antoinette.

  • What is the point of arguing and comparing one artist against another. If you'd prefer listening to Elvis, go and listen to Elvis. I don't really understand Elvis worship anyway. It all seems a bit sick to me to worship a cabaret singer as a God. There is no such thing as God anyway.

  • Elvis Presley does the VERY BEST version of this song !

  • @Mariontl another matter of opinion. not mine.

  • the bass intro of Elvis was better. Still great version!

  • hear also the versions from Kenny Rogers and Petula Clark

  • damn good version i never heard this version. was this the origional artist

  • best version of this is by Millie Jackson

  • excelent performances i like it at the same way to elvis version

  • Love this song, brings back old memories.

  • can't we all just get along?

  • thanks, zigg..love this version...I think we all have someone we wish we could go back and gather up, and say we had it going and let is slip away...looking back, and longing for the freedom of my chains...

    ....pretty profound sentiment...

hoping everyone is having a wonderful night...

  • the guitar intro was my very first lick I learned in the early 70's.today I play jazz guitar, but still never forgot this!

  • One song i could say i really enjoy and love and it reminds me of someone who i loved very much and is no more in this world but will always be in my heart until i die and that is none other than Richard who made me feel special and important and where ever you may be hope you know i still love you very much...... from your sweet

  • rohanwicks - song that hits the core of human spirit and connects with love's lost, a sweet pain

  • Just Beautiful...Thank You...x

  • best version yetxxxxx

  • evils' s family ordinates from gypsy 's. his ancestors where British migrants when they went over to populate the states.

  • k if you anything about anything, and especialy true with elvis. Blacks still werent marketable back then. so they would sell their songs to white artists, and especialy elvis. so this guy actually wrote this song, but bc he is black and couldnt have sold this song on his own, he had to sell it to? who else but elvis. everyone knows this happened.

  • White artists "stole them"? Did Fats Domino steal "Blueberry Hill" in 1956, a song introduced in 1940 by Gene Autry? Did The Platters in 1956 steal Glenn Miller's 1939 hit "My Prayer"? White artists recorded songs written by blacks just like black artists recorded songs written by whites. Ask Whitney Houston, who covered Dolly Parton's composition "I Will Always Love You." Take off the racial blinders and do some research before making any other ignorant assumptions.

  • "Loving Arms" was written by a white guy, Tom Jans, and introduced in 1973 by Dobie Gray, who recorded the biggest hit version of it to date. A smaller hit cover version was cut by Kris Kristofferson & Rita Collidge in 1974. Elvis' recording was not a hit but an LP track. Blacks did not "sell" songs to white artists; if ANY artist recorded a song written by ANY composer the composer earned a royalty. And blacks weren't marketable? Tell that to Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, etc..

  • it even isn't elvis song he stole it

  • i like this.. like elvis too

  • Great song and a great singer,I love this song.Thank you for posting.

  • Who was the other singer in this duet?

  • This was a #1 song in my native South Africa in 1974.

  • en français " j ai pleuré sur ma guitare" par halliday

  • You know this song really is awesome and it was a wonderful video, as far as the sound went for such a old song I totally give this a thunbs up!! Dixie Chicks did a amazing job on this and when I downloaded Elvis's version I was like who oringanlly did this so search and found that Dobie Gray did, awesome!!

  • ELVIS KING!!!!!!!!

  • Great voice, But... ELVIS sings it with tears in his eyes and a heart that's haunted and a soul, Tortured.. You can feel ELVIS' pain...

  • Oh no, I really feel it more with Dobie. Dobie's voice is like smooth like honey rolling off the hills of hope,"If you could see me now".

  • @IAMGODLIKE77 yeah and elvis wants a mouthful of my cock....

  • @betson363 if you have to toot your own whistle, you must not have enough to fill a mouth.D>A>

  • @IAMGODLIKE77

    that's absolutely true, my friend

  • @IAMGODLIKE77 You took the words right out of my mouth

  • I have always loved Dobie Gray. Where can I find more of his music? I love WE HAD IT ALL.

  • where can I find torrents for Dobie Gray's music? Mininova returns no results.

  • I bought the same tape.

  • Thank u ziggen ! I discovered this song on a vinal "Dynamic Sounds 1974" record I bought at a garage sale. Best 2 bucks I ever spent ! Classic lyrics+ voice !

    >>> The line " if I could hold you now" , "just for a while turn back the hands of time", "if I could hold you now" just reminds me of of a past real true love, I lost. And how deep that love really was.

Shame we really dont reconize when we have it and tend to lose that kind of deep love serenity. ;-(

  • this brings back so many wonderful memories. thanks for posting

  • I have just been treated to many renditions of this song,(from the King himself to the Dixie Chicks, and Kristofferson R.Coolidge) and they were all good! But, no by God body could touch Dobie Gray! Tom Jans wherever the Hell you are, You wrote a masterpiece! Dobie, you were, are, and always will be THE MAN! What a set of pipes! Ziggenpuss69 thanks for takin' the time for the upload, You Tube thanks as always for the space, and may we all ROCK ON SHINDIGGERS! Peace out and God Save Dobie Gray!

  • well just let me say...did like the rendition..but...hey...kind of bland...not the wrenching emotion Elvis portrayed at that particlar moment....

  • This version of "Lovin Arms" is truly beautiful. I wish Tom Jans was remembered for more than this one, but you're right, this was his masterpiece.

  • @9erfandex

    I couldn't agree more.Nobody does it better than Dolby! My mom had this when I was a child and it is one of my fav's still! For years I would ask if anybody remembered this song or who sung it.Not untill Dixie Chicks did I know the song.Goggle supplied the answer :0}

    Have a great nite!

  • I'm glad people remember Tom Jans. He wrote some great songs and no one could sing them better, although a lot of people tried.

  • Tell me this guy isn't great.

  • You might consider adding the songwriter to your tags: Tom Jans

  • Thank you. I never knew who wrote it but I,m more than happy to share the knowledge. Obviously a songwriter with heart.

  • no one , no one sings this better than etta james. i love you etta james you are the best

  • Loving arms this song is the best whoever sings it Dobie, Elvis, Etta or the great Milli Jackons whose version I heard 1st.

  • First song I ever learned how to play with my guitar... ;) Lovely song... always one of my favorites... timeless.. thanks for sharing...

  • 'lET GO' IS EVEN MORE BETTER..

  • I wonder what ever happened to Dobie Gray. He could sing. This song wasn't as popular as his hit "Drift Away", but it is still a beautiful song.

  • hei i did not grow up in the 60s i was born in the mid 70s but i can gladly tell you that i grew up listening to the 60 70s music its truly beautiful there is not much like it around it stands the test of time i tell you.

  • I've always considered this one of my favorite songs. Used to love to dance to it!!

    Very romantic imo.

  • I meant to say '70s, LOL

  • WOW, when I grew up my dad was always playing this album in his cars.... I love it, people had good music in the '60s yo!!
