Jack Vance's books hold up. What you remember as having been wonderful when you were young turns out to be just as wonderful if not better when you reread it later in life. I tried to look something up in one of his stories today and could not stop myself from reading the whole thing. He is absolutely correct about his reasons for remaining private, and at the same time it is a pleasure to hear him speak.
jack vance is truly the MASTER!!!! i m 63 and have read science fiction all my life. for the last 15 years i have searched for a writer as good as jack vance and it has been in vain. i would rather reread his works as read anyone else. i read for transportation and he does the best job of transporting me to another place and time with characters that i learn to care about.
His books are so incredibly scenic, he can make an image come out of the book like you were looking at a picture, even if he's detailing completely abstract and crazy things.
Coupled with some very smart elements in each of his books truly makes him a, if not the, master.
In the hands of the right director - Eyes of the Underworld and Rhialto the Marvelous would be instant classics - and something completely new at the same time. Not to speak of other "minor" jewels like Lyonesse or Blue World.
I am both longing and fearing the day his work will go into film...
Jack vance is imo the best fan/sci fi writers of all time and ive read many many books and no-one bar frank herbert even comes close. The dying earth novels are nothing short of master pieces.
Not a scene stealing personality, just a philosophical private man who lets his greatness shine in his creations. Vance is the favorite writer of many who can compare between many. In my little Swedish corner he is that, and almost beyond compare too.
Jack Vance is my favorite author of all-time. I have read almost all of his sci-fi books. The Dying Earth series is best. Absolute awesome use of language and description. Also outstanding black humor.
Hes right, the Hugo and Nebula are hardly ever awarded for the right works, they are always a make up prize for not recognizing earlier talents

Jack Vance... for me the absolute number one of all authors. The only books I can read again, again and again.

Absolutely the best and totally underrated. He should be up the with Philip K Dick. Been reading his stuff since I was a kid. I'm 56 now.

One of the few really good fantasy writters I've read. I love 'Dying Earth', 'Eyes of the overworld' and 'Cugel's Saga'. Read him.
