i did a chain of 135 for baby blanket and one side came out nice and other side came out messed up i need to fix it without taking the whole thing apart
@SexyPocahontas27 Unfortunately there is no way to fix it without starting over. What I suggest is that you count when you start over to make sure that both sides remain even.
Teresa....... I was wondering..... can you popcorn a chevron... I mean can you do a popcorn stitch in a chevron pattern..... or zig zag a popcorn stitch.... am I making any sense?...... I know I already asked this today on another variation, but I like this variation better
I look forward to hearing from you!! and thank you ahead of time for your time!!!
@MrsBabyLearn Yes you can work popcorn in the ripple. You could replace any of these stitches with a popcorn stitch instead if that is what you are looking for.
Hi Teresa , thank-you for the great video tutorial , I am wondering if I have it right, on your 1st row all the sc dec are done over 3 ch (so 1 ch is skipped) all rows after that the ends sc dec are done over 2 (no ch is skipped) also I am wondering if I can put 10 single crochet between each peak and valley ? thanks so much & keep stitchin' :D
Teresa, I have been looking for zig zag stitch for a time. I have happy to find this, can you do this video but use double crochet instead of single crochet please ????
ookay well i want to make a blanket 70"W 80"L but i dont know how many chains to do and i dont know how to add another color......also theres another patter called ocean wave ripple id like to learn how to make that one if you know how to do that one
when you are talking about the multiple being _ plus _ ... that means that you multiply it by the first # and then add the second number..???? is that right so w/ this video.. you would have a multiple of 15 so for instance lets go w/ 45 and then add 4 so you would need a chain of 49???? is that right???
@tjw1963 Thanks! one more question!!! lol. sorry this stitch has been drving me crazy! what exactly do you mean by different decrease on the ends? ive tried 3 differnt ways to do this stitch but i always end up having less or more on my ends!! what am i doing wrong :(?? Thanks soooooo much!
hi Teresa my name is Lori and I'm new to crocheting and have just learned your ripple stitch and want to do a baby blanket for my granddaughter but not sure how many stitches I am suppose to have . can you help me PLEASE?
hi my name is Lori and I just found out I am going to be a grandma 2 times and I want to make a baby blanket using this stitch but I don't know how many stitches to start out with will you please let me know thank you.
@TheJaga4 hi teresa i must have made a big mistake because i chained 304 and wound up with a blanket that is less than 3 ft. wide i am making a sc ripple and i counted the stitches in my last row (which is now 40) and there are only 175 stitches in the row. what did i do wrong and must i make more than 304 chains to make the blanket 60 inches wide??
hi teresa, ive been waqtching your videos for days trying to figure out how many stitches to cast on for a BLANKET. please help me. my son was just diagnosed with Lymphoma-b cell cancer. Hes always cold. I want to make him a blanket my you tube acct is thejaga4..thanks
@TheJaga4 i cast on 304 chains and my ripple is only three feet wide. i counted the stitches on my last row (which is the 40th row) and there nare only 175 stitches . what am i doing wrong and do i have to chain more than 304 to get adult size blanket(60inches wide)? thank you for any help you can give me.
Very nice, as usual, Theresa... Could you point me to the written instructions for this? I went on your blog, and didn't see it with the provided link.
Many thanks again for taking the time to teach us.
iam confused on the 1st row... the 1st & last sc decrease on the 1st row, am i doing it differently than the other rows? Am i skipping the 3rd chain in the decrease? or am i pulling up the 3 loops together and then pull through all 3? (bc you say the center is diff than the edges.... but in the 1st row you say to do the decrease like the center)
Well, i got as far as 60 stitches and have done them correctly on practice yarn. Lookin' good. Now if I could only do it on 120. That would make a nice blanket. I have so much yarn from garage sales. Somehow with that large number of chains (+4), I seem to lose count or something. Maybe this time. It took about 100 tries to get this. I always wanted to be able to do SOMEthing without a pattern. This is it, folks !
I love the fact that you face the camera toward the knitting. I was not able to find many like this, it is very helpful. Now that my grandmother is gone, I thought I would never remember how to crochet.
3 single crochet will be in the same stitch for the increase. This is what creates the peak of the ripple. If you look below my channel banner "The Art of Crochet", click on "More Info" and you will see a link to my crochet blog. I have a picture diagram of the stitch placement. That may help you understand where the stitches go.
Oh my gosh why didn't I find this months ago. Thank you so much for having this video. A friend requested a wavy scarf and I googled ripple patterns and came across this video. U r great and once again thank you for this video.
Thanks so much I was calling it the wavy stitch and I just couldn't figure it out from the book..thanks for making this video im so excited to get started!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for making this video. Thanks to your video I am now on row 3 of my single crochet ripple afghan which is for my king size bed. Thank you again. I am so happy that now I can do the ripple stitch.
The edges have a decrease. If you look to the right of the video you will see the link to the written instructions on my crochet blog. It will be under "More Info".
This video helped me do a ripple stitch properly.; But now the blanket is finished and I was wondering if there was a specific way to do a border seeings how the top and bottom edges are rippled????
Ms. T, you're amazing! Thanks so much! PLEASE keep posting. Question, though...how long did it take you to learn how to do so many different patterns and stitches? :)
If I am trying to add a ripple crochet on top of a regular single crochet (so that the edges of my scarf are straight instead of zig zag) is there a way that I can use a decrease that will not cause my regular single crochet rows (which are below) to warp or bend? Does that make sense?
i really enjoy these video's on how to crochet. im only 15 and i love to crochet since i was like 10. my mother was the one to teach me and she doesnt know much about different patterns and stitches. your videos really help me learn new ways to crochet. i just wanted to say thank you! and you should make more videos. i'd love to watch them and learn something new. thanks to you i'm way more experienced than everyone i know who crochet's...THANK YOU LOTS!!
how many chains did you have in there before you started adding stitches on? If that makes sense...I don't know if there is audio on this video as I am deaf so I am confused how many chains it was started with...never did these before!
The chain I used is a chain of 34. It is just a small swatch. If you look to the right of the video, below the channel image, you will see the multiple and written instructions. This will tell you how large of a chain you will want to make for your project.
Hi !! I had asked for the wave stitch on one of your other videos . I found it here just called a different stitch , just what i was loking for . You make it alot easier than the book :) Thank You so much!!!!
when you turn to move up to the next row, you chain one, sc , then do a decrease - in the decrease at the edges, do you still skip one? that how it appears in the patten on your blog, so i just wanted to clarify.
AAAHHH Finally I can Crochet more than just Granny Squares (while they serve their purpose, and look like Granma made it.... everyone in my fmily has had enough of the Granny Square!!!) :)
I'm just learning the art of crocheting..and I love your videos...they immensly help!! Those print instructions do not compare to watching a tutorial!
I am sorry I do not understand how you come up with how many stitches you need to make on the first row. I want to make a baby blanket that is 2 feet wide. How do I calculate that?
If you click on the "More Info" link to the right of the video, you will find information for the multiple. There is a set amount of chains 15, that it takes to make each Peak and Valley. That is called the multiple. You will determine how many chains you want in your afghan. Somewhere between 135-175 chains will make a nice size baby afghan.
Thank you so much for putting this up! I have wanted to know for so long how to do this i have always looked at the afghans my grandmother made and wished I could ask her how she did it know I know and can follow in her footsteps. Thank you again!
Thank you so much for putting this video on Utube. i was about to pull my hair out and then i thought i will look online and there you were. Thank you!!!
Just wanted to say "Thank You!" for taking the time to teach people like me how to crochet. My grandma taught me when I was a kid, but I live in a different state now and was having a hard time understanding the concept of how a ripple afghan is made...even after trying to read many patterns. Thank you! :)
Please disregard my former question. The end of this video answers my question. By the way, you are a blessings to many. I, for one, am grateful for this best lesson I have ever encountered. And the video is an extra plus! God bless! And thank you!
Okay...I'm going to as a dumb question?? But is it the same basic concept for doing a ripple with double crochet, or is it different for double crochet??
I have a really stupid question. This is the first thing I'm trying to crochet. When you say the multiple is 15+4.....does that mean if you do two chains (30) that you still only add 4 (to make it 34) or do you do 30+8 (4 by 2 as well)? I'm assuming you only multiply the 15, not the 4, but I would hate to put all that work in and be wrong. I'm sorry this question is probably so basic, this was a great instruction, I get the rest. P.S. how many multiples for a blanket (adult)
Using your example:(15+4) Lets say that you want 6 stitches to complete your project. You take 15x6=90, for 90 chains. Then you add the +4 amount, which is just done once in the beginning of your work.
What you can do to figure your amount for an adult blanket is to crochet a small swatch. Measure your swatch to figure your gauge, for how large your stitch work will be. Lets say you want your afghan to be 80". You figure how many of your stitchs will fit in 80". Lets say that 15 stitches will fit in 80". Take 15x15=225 for 225 chains. The add your +4 amount done only one time in the beginning.
Really stupid question. This is the first thing I'm trying to crochet. When you say the multiple is 15+4.....does that mean if you do two chains (30) that you still only add 4 (to make it 34) or do you do 30+8 (times the extra 4 by 2 as well)? I'm assuming you only multiple the 15, not the 4, but I would hate to put all that work in and be wrong. I'm sorry this question is probably so basic, this was a great instruction, I get the rest. P.S. how many multiples for a blanket (adult)
When I start on the chain I go through one. I go through two threads on each single crochet. You can go through one if you want to. It leaves an interesting pattern by going through only one.
You make it in one piece. You determine how wide you want your afghan to be from the multiple. If you want 12 ripple shapes, then you take 15x12=180+4 for 184 chains. There are many sizes of hooks and yarns in addition to the individual persons tension. The multiple will help you come up with a unique number to fit your crochet style.
I know how wide I want my ripple afgahn to be, but what I don't know, is what the numbers 15, 12 and 4 stands for. I need to know how you calculated these numbers to get 184 chains.
Where did you get the 12 and 184 chains from? 15+4 is the multiple. Each crochet stitch has a default multiple. Pattern crochet stitches have a more detailed multiple. This is how many chains it takes to complete the the pattern stitch. In this case, it takes 15 chains to complete one ripple. The + 3 is done one time at the beginning of the row.
sorry my mistake, you used the multiple 15+4, meaning the there is 7 stitches on each side of the ripple, plus 1 stitch on top and 3 stitches for the valley. 15sts x4 vallies = 60 chains, but you only did half of the 60 chs which would be 30+4=34 chains, is this how you came up with 34 chains.
All you need to do is crochet a chain the length you want and then do one of the pattern stitches I have demonstrated. If you crochet a scarf lengthwise, you would need about 200 chains. If you crochet the width it would be about 50-75 chains.
I truly enjoy the detailed manner in which you explain a project. Thank you for the valuable resource you have made available for crochet beginners and aficionados. Is there a particular use for the Single crochet Ripple?
I don't understand what you mean by "multiple: 15 + 4". Could you explain that, please, or point me in the right direction so I can figure it out? Thanks again for your videos. I've learned so much!
ty, i kinda fixed it but i didnt want to start over cause i was far along, so i did something that made it even lol

My grandma taught me when I was a kid, but I live in a different state now and was having a hard time understanding the concept of how a ripple afghan is made...even after trying to read many patterns. Thank you! :)

can you use the same technique of decreasing and increasing if you are using double crochet?
cindylauperdude 3 years ago
Yes, I do have a video tutorial for double crochet decreasing.

Please disregard my former question. The end of this video answers my question. By the way, you are a blessings to many. I, for one, am grateful for this best lesson I have ever encountered. And the video is an extra plus! God bless! And thank you!

I noticed that in the first row you do a dc decrease by skipping one. The second row you don't skip one. Should I alternate like you do?
Thank you

Okay...I'm going to as a dumb question?? But is it the same basic concept for doing a ripple with double crochet, or is it different for double crochet??
laceyhall1204 3 years ago
The concept is the same as far as reducing and increasing stitches in the same places to get the ripples.

Then you add the +4 amount, which is just done once in the beginning of your work.
tjw1963 3 years ago
What you can do to figure your amount for an adult blanket is to crochet a small swatch. Measure your swatch to figure your gauge, for how large your stitch work will be. Lets say you want your afghan to be 80". You figure how many of your stitchs will fit in 80". Lets say that 15 stitches will fit in 80". Take 15x15=225 for 225 chains. The add your +4 amount done only one time in the beginning.

are you going through two threads or just one
ATLASVARIAN 3 years ago
When I start on the chain I go through one. I go through two threads on each single crochet. You can go through one if you want to. It leaves an interesting pattern by going through only one.

so for afghan how many chains we should do like here u did 34 or we make 34 34 and then join them
muhammadkak 4 years ago
You make it in one piece. You determine how wide you want your afghan to be from the multiple. If you want 12 ripple shapes, then you take 15x12=180+4 for 184 chains. There are many sizes of hooks and yarns in addition to the individual persons tension. The multiple will help you come up with a unique number to fit your crochet style.
tjw1963 4 years ago
I know how wide I want my ripple afgahn to be, but what I don't know, is what the numbers 15, 12 and 4 stands for. I need to know how you calculated these numbers to get 184 chains.
roz3657 3 years ago
Where did you get the 12 and 184 chains from? 15+4 is the multiple. Each crochet stitch has a default multiple. Pattern crochet stitches have a more detailed multiple. This is how many chains it takes to complete the the pattern stitch. In this case, it takes 15 chains to complete one ripple. The + 3 is done one time at the beginning of the row.
tjw1963 3 years ago
sorry my mistake, you used the multiple 15+4, meaning the there is 7 stitches on each side of the ripple, plus 1 stitch on top and 3 stitches for the valley. 15sts x4 vallies = 60 chains, but you only did half of the 60 chs which would be 30+4=34 chains, is this how you came up with 34 chains.
roz3657 3 years ago
I did a 2 ripple swatch and started out with a chain of 34. There are 3 stitches at the top peak, 1 at the valley.

i was wondering if you can show how to make a scarf so i can pair them together with the beanie hat i learn from your videos.. thanks!
teresa688 4 years ago
