PTCello wat do u mean bell is overacting way too much????/
violinist change there attitude as generation passes. it might have been played different 2 hundred years ago. Bell did a tremendous job in this piece, he just has a different feeling towards this piece.
well this proves u dont know anything about putting feelings into pieces you play.
You know, there's an easy way to solve this problem... listen to the music without looking at the video. I hear an overly refined Haydn (yeah, I suppose there is such a thing). It's as though the soloist has beaten the orchestra into submission on every little element and passage here. Haydn is full of subtle qualities - I don't hear them coming out here. I hear a very serious rendition of the music. The nuance, the humor, the boisterousness, the playfulness, it just seems lost in seriousness.
Let me add to my last comment and clarify a point. People that say that Bell is moving too much or doing this or that aren't claiming that he lacks feeling. He clearly has feeling. I think most of us are pointing out that he is saturating the music with feelings that don't necessarily arise from the score - they are arising purely from his ego and vision of his own greatness as a soloist. We all know that Haydn is one of the greatest composers that ever lived - so why not take a humble appraoch?
Great concerto, great playing. However. Bell is a bit histrionic and much too aggressive.
Haydn's violin concertos are very much underrated. They aren't mozart(nothing is) but they are worthy pieces, and as full of joy as when they were written.
Am I the only one who wants to give the concertmaster a viking funeral while still alive? Really? The piano bench? COMON!

Bell would have to be one of my favourite violinists, but his movements do become quite distracting after a while.
His violin is probably the best looking (and sounding) you are ever likely to find as well.

I think people need to stop talking about how Bell is "overdoing it" Hes fantastic and everyone has different styles!
