  • Only the first half looks like ps1.

The character model in the end of the video(the bridge scene) has 10 times more polygons than the model at the begining(the fight scene). I think they only started the production on PS1.

The garden scene is only possible in a 128 bits system.

  • i want the song now

  • tear in the eye.

  • The first half looks like a PS1 game (and a very good looking one at that), but there's no way the last third of this video was. That part looks far better than any N64/PS game I've ever seen.

  • I'm glad they released it on the PS2 but this is still pretty damn impressive stuff here!

  • The graphics look amazing for a PS1 game, I've always wanted to play this version just to see how it was.

  • to 1:41 is a PS2 port tools (blooming and geometry is too acurate for ps1), the left is the R&D in PS2.

  • ya looks not much different compliment

  • They should add this as a bonus content for PSN or something, just to let us see what the PS1 was capable of. No game came out on the PS1's life time that had that type of lighting. Some of it is CG videos yes, but the actual garden parts with the sun beaming down, just wow. I would be happy to just explore garden area's and see the different graphical things. It seemed to run really smooth too!

  • i want to try this game. it looks cool and it would have been cool to play this version.

  • I didn't realize that the ps1 was capable of this

  • have PSX g GAME

  • That's not all PSOne footage - it appears to be a combination of PSOne footage eraly on, FM sequences later, and then prototype PS2 footage towards the end. It's nice to see how the game evolved from its inception, and even more remarkable to see some of the stages from the FINAL game in the original prototype!

  • people say that this is impossible for ps1 to do this, but the fact is that the console had much more to offer than the developers could produce, thats why i wonder if they tried to make a ps1 game today with all the possessed knowledge, would they succeed in making them 10 times better than before...i think its possible but nobody see's no profit out of it and thats why we will never find out.

  • This would have been an absolutely mind-bending PSone game, both in terms of technical (read: visual) presentation, as well as gameplay and story narrative. It would have been an amazing achievement.

  • this isn't running on ps1, if it had came out for the ps1 it would never look like this

  • The PS1 was a powerful machine, much more powerful than people give it credit for.

  • Just to let you guys know, it switches to the PS2 at 1:30. So that you don't lose your minds and think Fumito Ueda made a deal with Satan to get the PS1 to do those things :D

  • @Grubbo Well if that's the case, the video uploader should put an annotation that that point of the video saying so.

  • @Grubbo Hum... I don't think so... You can clearly see that the polygons are shaking like in every 3D PSX games... It's PSX in my opinion.

  • @mrnuage That's literally impossible. The PSX was simply -not- capable of bloom and flapping fabric like shown here. All those shots starting at the glowing green tree are way beyond anything the PSX could do outside of FMV.

  • Wow, the PS2 really doesn't look that much better...

  • Is that Bloom. On the PS1? Team ico? You CRAZY.

  • Shit, it still looks good to me.

  • Impressive for the PSone. I think they made the right choice though.

  • thank goodness that Ico was pushed back. Ico-chan was pretty ugly back then. now hes huggable!!! i also wanna hug Wander, but thats a different story...

  • For the PSone, this looks brilliant. Astounding what that team could do.

  • Im glad animations were so fluid, but other than that, the cardboard "3d" characters from PSOne gen I can do without...

  • incredible graphics for psone :O

  • @RyudointheWay

Yeah dude, these graphics could even almost pass for early ps2 graphics

  • I'm VERY glad that they delayed the game and remade it for the ps2.

  • I can swear I think I played a demo disk with this on it way back in the day. It was one of those PS1 demo disks that came with that game magazine (forgot name). I remember thinking it was neat but never did play the actual game on PS2. I also never had PS2 demo disks.

  • Kinda sad,

i think i would love It if it came to my childhood.

  • Comment removed

  • I am doing a fanfiction about this,it is taking time.It is hard to recreate the castle.

  • This video is a mix of an original animation Fumito Ueda made as a proof of concept, which was rendered in Lightwave (the parts where Yorda has the horns) and footage from early development builds. I actually didn´t thought I could find parts of this on the net :)

  • MAH GAWD those look like freaking ps2 graphics!!!

  • I want to ICO PSX ¬¬

  • DAMN! I can see why they waited! They were really pushing the hardware.

  • i would prefer the ps2 one rather than this

  • When I played this and made it to the bridge that collapsed ... I was stunned that I didn't even hesitate to jump back to yorda not even knowing if i would make it, not knowing if I was supposed to ... it was just instinct, I did it because I couldn't see me finishing without her. Forget the death of sniper wolf or when sephiroth killed aeris ... this was the game for me that defined what an emotion engine was.

  • wow it still looked great even on PS1, its good that it ended up on ps2 but it might have been interesting to play this version.

  • What the fucking hell? Even if this is PS2, it's still miles ahead of any other games I can think of. It could even hold ground against modern next-gen games

  • @Reiuyi Parts of the video are pre-rendered scenes done in animation software. Even PS2 can´t pull such hi-res.

  • @Leon1464 excuse me for pointing this out but the gameplay footage they display is less than 240p, while PS1's maximum was 480p at 4:3. At such low resolutions, it's not that hard to imagine the PS1 rendering such graphics. In a couple of scenes you also see debugging info from the SDK..

  • @Reiuyi Oh not everything is pre-rendered of course. But the intro of this clip when you see the castle and the sea that is pre-rendered, or the part from 1:06 to 1:14, or 1:23-1:28.You can see it clearly at about 2:25 that is Lightwave rendered FMV. The graphics is too crisp even for a PS2 hardware. The rest of the clip is footage from early PS1 and PS2 versions of the game ;)

  • It's just like when Sega originally put Shenmue for Sega Saturn then cancelled it for the Dreamcast release.

  • um. sure its an early version but this is clearly ps2 tech look at the lighting effects and the polygons in the environment

  • And if this is, in fact, footage from a PSOne Beta, then I bow to the uncanny game design skills of Fumito Ueda. (But I do that already!) That would mean he squeezed more power out of that little grey box than anyone before! In any case, it stillmust have been impossible to make the game work to his vision, otherwise it would have been released on PSOne.

  • I find it difficult to believe this development footage was captured running on PSOne hardware. The FMV portions look like PSOne FMV's, but the in game is too high resolution to not be PS2. Look at the light blooms and shadowing effects. They're more dynamic than PSOne could produce. Go back and play late PSOne games, like Driver 2, that pushed the PSOne hardware and compare the graphics. It seems more likely this is development footage running on a PS2 development kit.

  • @IAmThePumaMan

I believe this video is actually multiple builds, starting with the first PS1 version where yorda has horns rather than the boy, then onto the second PS1 build where he has horns, then onto an early version on the PS2 hardware which is when all the nice lighting comes in.

  • Im not sure how much of the game was in-game graphics but damn. I cannot even imagine this running on the PSX. An amazing achivement. Im still glad they waited for the right time on the PS2.

By the way. Am i the only one who think that Ico looks alot like Milo in the last bit of the video xD

  • wow, i had no clue this exzisted

  • This? THIS is on the PS1? Dang, they pushed the boundaries of the system before moving Ico to the PS2...

  • That would have been really amazing for a PS1 game!

  • its odd .. when i was in 2nd grade my friend always talked about this game and the parts he was getting stuck on and stuff but he wasn't talking about the ps2 because none of us had one and i don't even think this game was even out then and maybe not even being made and a few years later i see a trailer for the new game "ico" so i have no idea what that kid was playing or where he got it .

  • i wish this was the real game

    wahaw

  • thank god that they put it on ps2, i woulda died if they didnt

  • thank god they waited for the playstation 2

  • easily the best PSone graphics if it came out. huge fan of the games, watchin this gave me the chills. at some points it looked like the ps2 version, of course not the pre-render bit. cant wait for the hd collection on ps3 to come out.

  • That Yorda sucks

  • I can't believe how good the graphics are for a ps1 game.

  • @crassisdead It was the limitations of the PS1 hardware that caused them to switch consoles.

  • I am wondering so hard what the horns and wings are about im almost crying!!!

  • If it were the final result for ICO, it would be one of the best, if not the best looking ps1 games.

  • this game shoul be on psp or ps3

  • @85fabricio I read in the net that Fumito don´t used the max of the ps2 when he made this game

  • wow besides the characters those were pretty decent good graphics

  • 1:26

    Damn! those are ps1 graphics?!

  • Wow for PS1 hardware this game looked gorgeous and almost impossible! PS1 was and still the most revolutionary console ever made! I miss those days!

  • @Novecento No.

  • wow i gotta say ico had REALLY big horns in the original version

  • @jutinjons i think that was yorda i dunno cuz it shows 2 horned people

  • This is like the opposite of ICO in ps2...

  • I miss this game so much! Sony should make PS3 compatible to PS2 and release this on PSN. I would definatley get it!

  • So i guess the girl has horns in the ps1 version o.o?

  • Ico changed a lot from the original.

    then,it was first to ps1

  • I read that originally Yorda that had horns and Ico was a prisioner that had to clean the castle

  • great! can't wait for The Last Guardian for PS3.

  • Too good graphics for psone.

  • Fumito use use the maximun capacity of the videogames

  • holy crap i never knew about that!! i'm glad tho that it came out on the ps2 :) one of ma fav games of all time

  • wow I'm amazed at the graphics. For being on PS1 I think it's quite fair to say that this is probably the best graphics on that platform.

Sad to say the final version for PS2, graphic-wise did not really set the same bar. Still looks good but nothing compared to the God Of Wars or MGS2. The scale of Shadow of the Colossus though, that was something!

  • Man this game was realised in 2002 in America.Has been long time ago,the grafics are great for 2002...

Only to say,Ico and shadow of the colossus were made by Fumito Ueda

  • "The Best Of PS1"

    ,I love the Graphics!!!!,Awesome

  • This game had marvelous graphics for a PS1 game, but the PS2 version pushed the PS2's graphical capacity to it's limit.

They both look great, but I'm glad it came out on the PS2.

I'm also looking forward to "The Last Gaurdian."

  • Ico push the ps2 capacity to max in 2001,shadow of the colossus make this again in 2005.Now i think the last guardian will do the same

  • Pushed the PS2's graphical capacity to it's limit? Hell no, it was an early title for the PS2, so it's reasonable that it wouldn't.

  • @Jaemseh LOl Pushed "PS1" graphical capacity to it's limit NOT PS2

  • I think this shows the transformation from the earliest stages on the PS1 to the final product on the PS2.

Anyway, the end result was simply beautiful.

  • I hope that, after Last Guardian, they start working on porting both Ico and SotC to the PS3. Both had issues (frame rate and Ico's somewhat awkward animations) but I'd be willing to purchase the remakes at full price.

  • these guys really know how to get the best out of a systems power.

  • incredible... but PS2 version is still the best (not only graphics)

  • epic graphics

  • very nice graphics for ps1!

  • :o Jamiroquai

  • lol I thought the same at 2:38 xD

  • nfs4 , Vagrant story and did you forget GT?

  • trico (the last guardian) its not gonna be sequal, its gonna be a prequal for sotc

  • thank god this wasn't the final result for ICO

  • but as a PSone game, you can't deny that it would have been the most innovative and awesome game for its time.

  • i guess it still would've been a good game but it just looks visually messy in my opinion. Not like the graphical eye candy it is was then even for an early ps2 game

  • if you take a look at all the brilliant games ps1 was able to pull that ps2 failed to ,

its luck that at least this gem got left for ps2

ie, I dont agree that there was a lack of innovative games

  • @fromstart2finish but great grafics for a ps1

  • @fromstart2finish

    it wouldve still been great

  • @fromstart2finish

at the time i dont think that people wouldve mind. its only because its on the ps3, and the expectations werent that high.

  • @fromstart2finish

Actually it looks fucking amazing for PS1.I'm not going to lie,the first time I saw this footage,I thought it was a PS2 game.

  • wow some of that is really amazing for playstation

  • Because it's not in-game engine but prerendered animation.

  • looks way too good for a ps1 game

  • Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing that!

  • great video!

  • WTF?! is this for PSone?

  • no it's for the PS2.

i think (don't blame me if I'm wrong) that ICO was delevoped by the same guys who did "shadow of the colossus" which I regard as one of the most beautiful and inspiring games of the last decade ;)

  • This video is actually the "lost" footage of the game early in it's development when it was intended for the PSOne.

  • Yes

  • Well "Xenogigas" says that this version is the first one, developed for PS1, and actually it's quite different from the one developed for PS2. Anyway the graphics are unbelievable for a PS1!!

  • No, but it was planned to.

  • *.*

  • this song is beautiful.

    anybody know what its called?

  • You were there.

  • lol, they changed almost everything. and it turn better I think.

  • his horns are on backwards good thing they fix that in the ps2 one

  • Uhh...you can't do that xD

You honestly think that you can freely rip off ICO from Team ICO and Kingdom Hearts from Square Enix for your OWN game?

    No allowed.

    You'd get sued xD

  • i might need a LOT of permission and money, but it might be possible. i dont know.

  • or he could join team ico lol, yet make if i made ico 2 {which is gonna have a sequal called project TRICO, } then i would make it like the orignal exept ADD MORE BOOM LIGHTING !!! BOOM LIGHTING MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER IN ICO LOL, and if you would make an ico 2, you would have to work with team ico, if they are still soing stuff lol, but this is all for the lols right ???

  • this seems like a prequel

  • This game looks alot like Shadow of the Colossus, which is a fantastic game.

  • you have no idea... they were developed by the same team you know?

  • cause shadow of the colossus is made from the same creators, and its intended to be a prequel of the game... did you noticed the horns that Wanderer when he was reborn?

Well, the creators of the game had that intention.

    See you

  • its fun, but can be frusertating , which makes the challenge lol

  • i dont think this is a Playstation 1 video clip i think its just the beta tests they did for Ico before they released the game because alot of beta tests for ganmes look like this sort of stuff. like the beta tests for Final Fanmtasy 10 look like Final fantasy 7 for PS1 so i dont think this was a PS1 showcase of ICO simply just a beta Test

  • Some of the footage early in the clip is actual PS1 footage. But you're right, most of the footage is from early PS2 beta versions.

  • one of my fav games on ps2 with shadow of the colossus and god of war 2.

  • the graphics look better tahn the PS2 version...

  • I agree!

  • My favorite game of all time, great video I saw this a long time ago but glad I found it again.

  • PhenixFireAshs ico remake would be not interesting but there will new ico on ps3 :D i cant whait...

  • A new one? 8D

  • ICO was one of the first games of PS2....something like first to sixth game of PS2

  • Really? I'm supprised it didn't get the recodnition it deserved then.

  • Still would of been an amazing game.

  • thay should remake the game on a next gen console like the ps3 or xbox360, this is my favorite game.

  • was a demo of this ever released ?

  • Thye reused the animation from the psx/ps1 version and why not, they were already exelent.

You'll notice that the acheivment on ps2 is making it extremely close to the CG work of the ps1 version, and thats why they went out on a limb to add shadows as well as did that cheap R2T low resolution to soften it. They even took the same exact textures from the CG if you notice.

  • Shadow of the colossus and Ico are not just video games in my opinion, they are spiritual jurnies in a way.

  • are you serious those graphics are amazing for playstation one

  • I think this is one of the best game ever.

  • its looking so good as for ps1.

  • i simply love the song

and the game on ps2 was awersome

  • i think this looks better coz the rooms are smaller; more puzzles (maybe. . .?)

  • How is it that this looks better than the PS2 version at times?

  • maybe there were supposed o be some pre-rendered scenes

  • Actually ICO was set to release on the PSX if i'm right, but wasn't due to ps2 being released like..three months after the game was.

  • yeah, we know. that's why nickitidey asked why it (the PSX version) sometimes looks better than the PS2 version and I replied that maybe because some of scenes are prerendered movies that were supposed to be included in the PSX version.

  • is there a difference between the psx and ps1?

  • the psx was a smaller and more economical version of the original playstation, the same as how the ps2 came out and then they made a smaller version

  • its funny cuz i never noticed it but i bought both the small playstations haha

  • I thought it was the other way around, the PSX was the big one, and the PSone was the small one. Cause on the small one is labeled PSone

  • you're correct

  • Yep. That's right.

  • There was also the 'PSX' which was a media hub kinda thing, lots of audio/visual inputs/outputs and the like. Though, it may have been based on the PS2 and not the original PlayStation, and I don't think it was released outside of Japan because it flopped...

But yes, PSX is most commonly used to refer to the original PlayStation. :)

  • Mm yes, I remember reading about that a few years ago. I thought it was the PS3 for a second haha.

  • Exactly.

  • songname? :P

  • it's called "You Were There" from ICO's ~Melody in the Mist~ soundtrack

  • One of the most amazing games I've ever played, bar none. It's pure atmosphere and story, just like SoTC. Not only that, but it's got one of the best soundtracks ever, to boot. The ICO OST is one of my all time fave albums.

What amazed me about Ico, from a technical standpoint, is that it was one of the first games out for the PS2, but it still managed to push the PS2 to it's technical limits. You didn't see any other games that looked anywhere near this good until the end of the PS2's life.

  • Dude the ps2 is still going strong.

  • Well, yeah, but you know what I mean. ;)

  • you got everything on point man.

it's strange and rare, but ridiculously rewarding, how deep this game has affected all of us.

  • ICO is incredible, I didn't know it was first made for PSX, but the work they put on it was awsome, one can look when dedication and affort are putted on the right place, and ICO is an example. Now by knowing this game and taking it as refference people can distinguish a GOOD game from others.

    It's a job well done.

  • It's doesn't matter. A lot of people don't know their assholes from their mouths, let alone a masterpiece from your run-of-the-mill graphics whore-fests.

ICO was already a pretty graphically accomplished game on the PS2, but it's simply out of this world considering how it looked on a PSX tech demo. The best looking PSX game I could remember was probably MGS1, and this tech demo is still years ahead of that. I almost find it hard to believe that it's actually on the PSX.

  • some of that is early ps2 footage

  • ico is art. There are times in this video when the game graphics looks like it's running on original xbox.=] go sony for making this game shine!

  • the shadow of the colossus is a prequel to ico
