This is terrible intro to a great game. I saw several illegal positions (stones surrounded that should have been removed), and this doesn't teach anywhere near enough to start playing. Check out GoshawkHeron's tutorials if you want a better intro
This is misleading. "Conventional boards are 9x9, 13x13, or 19x19". While 9x9 and 13x13 are played more than say 5x5 or 21312321x21312321, your comment makes it seem as if these three sizes are of equal importance.
The fact is, go is a 19x19 board game, but sometimes it can also be played on a 9x9 or 13x13 to teach beginners. Heck, even 17x17 (tibetian go) is more accurate to be called conventional than 9x9 or 13x13.
Regarding the final statement in the video: Aarima is another board game where the best human players still almost always win when playing against the best computer opponents.
Apparently, they had no clue how the game works in practice. Why didn't they ask an actual player? 0:11 There is a captured stone on the board which must be removed before the next move. 1:18 The situation on the board is still unsettled. 1:28 This is totally messed up and uncountable. 1:30 In ten years playing, I have NEVER seen any go player count like this. The "Video Tutorial for he Game of Go" is far superior to this. Or write me a message and I'll teach you to play if you're interested.
...do these people know how to play Go? I'm staring at 1:18, and I'm not understanding. Where's the territory? Why are there completely surrounded stones still on the board? I don't understand!
The only reason humans can beat the computer at go is because the software is no where near the level as Chess software. It also doesn't help Go is so complex in nature vs chess which is tactically complex just simplier in play and learning.
Sets of tactics make up a strategy. Tactics are more reactional to the situation, a strategy is more an over all plan. I.e. assessing and planning to win the battlefield versus situational tactics fighting in the trenches to eventually win that battlefield. P.S Cheer up.
@bukowski1950 that is false bro you no nothing of Go, or the difference between strategy and tactics. Get a dictionary, and learn grammar. Play go become a Dan player ,and than tell me that garbage again. Until then take it from an expert at the game, your wrong!
We need to design military mainframe failsafes around go, so that if a powerful AI ever comes into control of the united states' nuclear arsenal, we may still have a chance of defeating it.
That game is hella hard to play. I guess only chinese people are smart enough to know how to play them. Too bad, people are too busy with life these day to still play this. However, Chinese chess is still very popular!
@steve201314 go is a game with TOO MANY possible moves,so humans CANT think of them all, hence GO is played (at beggining at least) intuitive, theres no "openings" like in chess, its stupid game
@bukowski1950 This is completely false. Go has standard opening theory. The opening is where you are going to take most of your time thinking if you are good, this will set you up with a good position to play from in mid game so you won't have to play catch up for the rest of the game. Kyu's study something known as joseki it is standard variations for opening play, and before sdk's hit dan they are learning which joseki is appropriate for which board position(this is also known as whole board
thinking). Go is only ten percent tactical play, and the rest of the play is strategy(considering everything you can do on the board, and choosing the play that best corresponds with all of your pieces. You sir have a vary limited understanding of Go, and you must not say harsh things about a game you know nothing about.
@igofighter Sorry,I should've wrote "stupid game FOR ME,ANYWAY".I really didnt EVER played GO,and I certainly dont know much about it,actually,I didnt know this game exist till I saw this clip. And what I wrote is based on first look, and my thinking. So,I'm sorry.I just CANT comprehend how would be possible for human to make ANY tactics,in the beggining. You have MILLIOMS of choices.Maybe Im wrong,no offense, thats my tought.Btw,I play chessIm a "talented amateur",as they say.
@bukowski1950 No they are two completely different concepts. Tactics is the battle or fight you read out to win(chess is full of this combinations are a key to being good at chess). Strategy is planing out every battle before they happen to win the war(strategy uses tactics to accomplish it's plans). Strategy does not require reading out moves like tactics does( tactics read out what is happening locally in one small area of the board), strategy sees globally what is happening across the enitre
board. Like a choice during the game to play a 3-4 stone instead of a 4-4, I most consider that play and what bearings it has on the rest of the game, but me killing a group that is tactics, and if used correctly it accomplishes my board wide strategy for the game.
@igofighter Ok,sorry to tell you,but this is complete bullshit.Tactic reads what is happening LOCALLY?!WTF?!?Tactic and strategy are SAME thing, you plan it before game, and you sometimes adopt it considering your opponents moves.
PS You could've also just sad,ok,Im sorry, like I did.Why EVERYBODY must act like most clever person on the world on internet?
Tactics see whats happening on small area of the board....Yea.Right.
WTF?? they didn's khow anything about go!! (but nice board and stones :D) why they did'n remove dead stones? why in 0:13 white C10 ?? why in 0:12 right top and right bottom corners are emty?? they did'n khown anything about GO rules and Fuseki, just see how this idiots finished the game in 1:19 without any territory, hundred stones in atari and more than 5 unremoved stones. IDIOTS!!
@musicaladdiction14 Odd, i didnt know an ancient board game could have a sexual preference...or are you just using it as a derogatory term because you have nothing better to do? Maybe you shouldn't rant on things you don't understand, because from what i have gathered, you have yet to grasp the basics of Monopoly, let alone go. Don't comment on things you don't understand.
I know how to play Go but if I looked at this vid and not knowing how to play, I would still not know how to play. THEY DON'T KNOW ABOUT GO, but that's Howcast for you.
