My friend told me he tried this and it hurts. Does it really? If it does i understand because i guess it would build the strength in your arms and hands? So is this suppose to hurt or bruise purposely?
The other reason that there are WC/WT/VT names, it is because besides different pronounciations and spellings ( Cantonese and Mandarin) in English, people also want to dintinguish and commercialize their MA systems, also people add their own understandings and interpretations on their MA systems. Same as in Karate, there are different styles (ryu). Everyone says that his style is the best, tests and time will prove. If you fail, don't blame whatever style you learn, but blame yourself.
WC/WT/VT are only different spellings of the same style of chinese MA. The different spellings are due to Cantonese and Mandarin pronounciation difference. People also want to use different spellings to distinguish and commercialize their MA system. Before Mr. Ip Man passed away, Wing Chun probably was the only one English spellings (Cantonese pronounciation). Wooden dummy training is not unique in WC, style like Choy Lei Fut, Seven Star Praying Mantis also have wooden dummy practice.
A teacher said that WC/WT/VT is considered to be a half soft , half hard martial art. WC is not as soft as Tai Chi etc. (soft style MA) , but not as hard as some hard style MA ( Choy Lei Fut ? Seven Star Praying Mantis?) WC/WT/VT all came from the same origin. Mr. Ip Man was the grand master in Hong Kong credited to the spread of WC started in 1950's . Different people uses different English pronounciation to distinguish and commercialize their WC system. In Chinese, the name is same.
"Speed " and " Hard Body Conditioning " are the very very last thing you want when training on the WC /WT/VT wooden dummy ! People are misled to believe that if you hit hard, hit fast, then you master the wooden dummy technique well.... Totally wrong ! you walk into the wrong path. It is the subtlety (subtle movements) of the body alignments, angles of body, foot works, entry technique, deflection and body, arm, hands, legs and centre line , intercept and attack co-ordination practice.
speed is key to win a fight no matter what martial art, then power comes in. having a good structure will give you more strength... but u might want to say that in front of his face and he'll most likely show you how much structure he has lol.
and i didn't mean it to sound bad, but it just seems so.....wacky i guess. i've seen ip ching and ip chun use the wooden dummy and it doesn't look half as crazy as this guy seems to get.
@siulamtau its a form of hard body training, your bones are made of up of thousands of cells that, when broken by trauma, repair themselves and are made stronger by extra deposits of calcium. By using the wooden dummy it means his arms will genuinely become stronger. No matter how he looks if he punches you, you'll feel it.
Dont want to give this guy to much of a hard time, but this looks really messy. Maybe its me, but i actually couldnt see any of the dummy forms here. It looked to me as if he was just making it up, throwing in the moves wherever he felt like. Check out the original 88mm video of ip man performing the dummy and tell me this isnt bad. He wasnt turning in his stance (as far as i could see) - and what looked like the Po pai section was also particularly bad.
@xtm951 Hi. Sorry im not really sure what you mean. All i meant with my comment was that this guy in the video is claiming to demonstrate the Wing Chun dummy forms. He doesnt seem to be doing that, and his footwork isn't fantastic either. Surely if this guy is making educational videos teaching people wing chun he should actually do wing chun?
@xtm951 Mate, theres no need to get childish! Obviously i understand the words, what im saying is the your not making much sense. You say this is choreography, fair enough. Im just saying it looks as if hes made this up since hes not performing the actual forms which is pretty shitty when hes supposed to be showing people how to do wing chun.
@xtm951 Your saying this was choreography intended was to make his dummy form look better on film? Well, he has to know this video is going to attract the attention of people who do the art, plus this is supposed to be about teaching people who would like to do WC what the art is all about. With that in mind, surely he should just to the forms rather then this. Unless, he doesnt know the forms.
WING TSUN is the best martial art ever, good for girls too, I bet everyone to fight with me and be sure I will hurt if I want, I am a Wing Tsun girl student and I had my good results... so do not talk if you don't know that Wing Tsun is...
Alright, 3 questions, if I get a wing chun dummy, where can I get one, how much does it usually cost, and to get it to hold still when I hit it, do I NEED a rack like the one he has here? Or is it not required to make it stable?
At the end of the day he is showing you a taste of Yong Chun, however as a newcomer to Yong Chun I don't find this video particularly helpful because all is doing here is showing off that he can hit the targets fast.
Real martial arts is not about what master you trained with or going to train with, who got rejected from which school etc. Martial arts is a way of life; attitude, respect in all matters of life, if do Yong chun to show off you will never understand the true meaning.
With dedicated training, his techniques will developed from blunt to sharp and his circles will get smaller and smaller. With pondering, his moves will be more sensitive!
sad. My sifu had issues with him over 10 years ago with his crap. nothing has changed. keanu reeves wannabe. he was rejected as a student by Sigung Chan. dont belive me?? look at his web page. he still has pictures up like he was accepted. sorry negative. Sigung Chan was the lead interpreter and head representative. sorry if I seem like im being rude, but this guy needs to take down his banner. period!!
yeah basically wing chun is just all about speed and not giving your opponent the chance to defend or anything. just everything about : everything away from your center, defend and attack, bring him to the floor and paralize!
i do it since i'm 16 and its awesome when your little brother wants to hit you or something!XDDD i think its the most effective and controlled style of martial arts! 1000 points for the master here!^^
Based on what prejudices do you conclude this? Please provide premisses & not just your uninformed opinion, then people might actually learn from your superiority.
dude u are so good .. I wish i could go lessons and teach me that tecknique . Unfortunately my dad dont let me to go because he think i will leave with broken face ...
ha ha ha ha ha ha this guy has no technique he is fast yes but he isnt doin it right just watching the way his hands move he is making stuff up there are alot of posers out there this is one of them stick with the teachings of master IP man
@velociti85 A sure way to spot a Wing Chun bullshitter is to watch his hips and how he steps. This guy's hips are inwards. In that position, your structure sucks. You must maintain a pelvic tilt for the proper power and rooting His stepping also sucks. When you step, you should not bounce up and down like that. You should maintain the same level and actually sink a bit when you attack. I don't even need to see his hands. The waist down tells the whole story!
I agree with P22 in that, this guy's pronunciation and form are sloppy, but dismissing a style like wing chun as "making no logistical sense" is a huge generalization that shows P22 doesn't know what he's talking about, and like many people has a bias for the style he does. And if you want to talk about any style thats choreographed, any style with forms is essentially choreographed, its how you extract the techniques that counts.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ok? some of us actually practice a worthwhile fighting style. Choreographed hand motions that make no real logistical sense aren't going to help anyone in a fight.
I know, right? So many people talk shit on this thing and what they dont know is that if they really try to fuck with this kat, they'd get handled like nothing. This guy seems like the real deal. I'd love to learn from him. He's like Keanu Reeves with muscles and actual wing chun skill.
Shit! That's expensive.... But if I was a passionate Wing Chun practitioner and I was really good, like not necessarily black sash skill, but decent, I'd spend the money.
well u watch the other videos, this video is like the final completion of ur knowledge, truthfuly only thing u would like to learn from this tipe of fighting would be the blocks, well its my own preference cuz i prefer gentle hand technique over rough attacks, so no punching for my with knuckles
If i ever win the lottery i will spend my time training with top Wing Tsun teachers around the world...I think i just witnessed one of these great teachers in action
Mook Yan Chong is an excellent training device for the arms and for the close-range kicking techniques. Can be practice at different speeds and blindfolded for extra-sensitivity training. However, one must be cautious about using it for "toughening" the arms or using full knuckle punches. This is just a regular execution. Nothing extraordinary.
That was the best wooden dummy form demonstration I've ever seen, but I am only a beginner, and I've only seen one by Yip Man, and one by Dunn Wha, a Moy Yat student. anyone can do something fast...doesn't nessicarily mean it will be technically sound...I do agree with you, but his comment of being good because he's fast is off the mark in my estimation...
Nice moves, i pratice wooden dummy too and i'm always creating new techniques to try out.

Although you may be fast but you are hitting the dummy with your fist which is important than open palm.
