  • Hi! I've got a problem: Wednesday one of my female budgies died. She was brooding five eggs, and now I'm incubating them. I wanted to ask you some advices about handfeeding, especially for the very first days. I heard that it isn't necessary to feed them the first day, 'cause they still have nutritional elements from the egg. Is it true?

I know it's gonna be difficult, but I hope that the eggs will hatch, I was very affectionated to their mother. Sorry for my English.. Thank you, and good video!

  • How much would i feed a 3 week old C.A.G. going to do about 2- 3 feedings a day 6 a.m., 3 p.m. them again before i go to bed around maybe 9

  • Thanks! This video will do just fine, because I have a baby mourning dove and I'm not sure of which side to put the syringe in because I don't want to drown it! Please tell me! Hurry please!

  • This is very informative :)

Do they have to be fed so quickly though? Im afraid of choking the bird. That quaker barely swallowed the formula fast enough..it got all over him.

  • alright slow down on the feeding

  • Probably one of the best informative video on hand feeding. Thank you!!!

  • how much do u give a baby ring neck

  • nice birds

  • Yeah, slow down...

Cockatoos are crazy, fyi. They are pretty difficult to feed. As are macaws.

I used to feed dozens of birds and it's like a science.

You learn how to make the feed consistency perfect & how to not waste as much. It cools quickly and sometimes it takes a while to get the right temp.

You want it to be between 104-107 degrees fahrenheit. Clean the syringe and make new feed between each bird. You don't want crop infections. Also, make sure you change the tank between feeding.

  • @kalliereann NO NO NO, The formula must be fed between 100-105 degrees. If you feed it any hotter you will burn the crop, any colder and the bird can't digest properly, which causes sour crop (formula spoiling while still in the birds stomach). PLEASE contact a PROFESSIONAL before you ever attempt to handfeed ANY bird, handfeeding is a life and death situation EVERY TIME!

  • lovely to watch, thank you 5/5

  • what are you supose to feed baby morning doves please let me know okay

  • I recommend you go to the pet store and get baby bird feed.

  • WTF 1.32 and 1.43. Calm the hell down when you feed them give them time and slow down! Have patience or dont even bother!

  • know the limit. as you can see i am not very bird smart. so please any help you could give or a site you could suggext would be very much appreciated. thank you

  • Hey there im goign to get a CAG in about 3 weeks and he will be about 7 weeks old i have never hand fed and i need some advice about the temp and how often and what kind of formula to give him. when will i start to wean him off of it like at what age? and since hes so young do i need to have a heated blanket under him when hes not out of his cage? also i know if you handle kittens to much they will die is it the same with baby birds? i want to spend as much time with him as possible but need to

  • Go to someone in person and have them teach you in person.

  • I recently started rearing grey's but the 1 i have now is a very bad eater. can take upto 20mins sometimes,(which is difficult when we're having to keep the food warm) i've decided i'll try the syringe feed him and see how i get on with that. so thanks for the tips was very helpful.

  • I recommend that you go to a pet store first and see it first hand. If you have a slow eater there is a reason and you may end up aerating your bird.

That wouldn't be worth saving 5 minutes.

  • Keeping food warm is a problem that is easy to solve , with the "double broiler method . use a stainless bowl floated in a larger bowl of water slightly warmer than you want , because the formula will cool a bit when transferred to the syringe or spoon, if it cools too much just drop the syringe into the bowl of water.

  • I have been hand raising birds for years and never used the breeder feeding method . , i have used everything from spoons , toothpicks and potato peelers , but do prefer the syringe just because it is cleaner-- the safest though not speediest method is to let the bird eat and swallow naturally , in all the years I have been hand feeding I have NEVER lost a bird from crop burn , static crop , or asphyxiation,, I think because crop injection and breeder method are bad and unnatural.

  • I think your talking about the tube yes? I just can't imagine a bird having to go through that.

I'm not wild about this method also but it was a request . I does allow the bird to swallow if you slow it down. I prefer the methods you mentioned. mainly because this method can crop burn pretty easily. People tend to get to confident and cut steps out by not checking temp.s for example.

  • what temperature is warm enough for zebra finches?

  • I volunteered 2 seasons at a wildlife rehab center feeding baby birds of many sizes. Guidelines were that if we weren't sure, to go with tepid. Zebra finches & other small birds are hard cause you do need to make sure you have a small enough syringe. That was more of an issue than temperature, since by the time we got them still, the food on the tip of the syringe had cooled enough!

If you have time, I prefer to just dab some food in their beak & let them swallow instead of feeding this fast.

  • I agree.

  • birds should be free. not in cages.

  • I totally agree with you!

    Catherine

  • cant they aspirate when you filll he mouth like that?

thats my concern, i see people just shoot the food into the crop and i am like OMFG, can i do that!?

i feed a bit at a time, so paranoid. I had canaries that the parents were not feeding and i am sure he got food in his lungs..not pleasant,. he died. it is not easy to feed a tiny canary. i am feeding another cuz mom is sick and all is well.

I have 2 lovebird babies to feed and i do worry , i will give it the first feeding in an hour

  • I personally do not do this. It is a method that breeders use. If you read the previous comments I would prefer a spoon if I had a baby bird, or an eye dropper. I was not the feeder I was the photographer.

  • well, th ebaby canary died...i need one of those crop needles.

the lovebirds are growing much faster now they are being handfed (the parents 1st time) and it is MUCH easier than a canary I tell you!

  • GOD I bet! Only a well experienced breeder should feed a Canary. This is an aggressive feeding technique. I wish more people would read this message.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • Its quite a helpful video though i did have trouble hearing the narrator over the backround noise. Good vid though.

  • thank you

  • those birds are soooooooo cute! i have a budgie , and i want parrot too <3 :)

  • OverTheRaynbow Why are u feeding the bird so fast ist it going to chock

  • I would like to take this opportunity to direct you to the description of the video. That should clear it up. I'm not feeding them. Also if you scroll down you will see other helpful responses.

  • Could it be he doesnt actually like the formula. Im giving him Kaytee. as he comes and eat anything from my hand but when I put the formula on my hand he just went away.....this is so strange for me.....Its true there is always the first time in everything :)

  • That's definitely possible.

I had a bird that wouldn't eat a food I just bought once from a new store I didn't regularly attend of a familiar brand.

Turned out upon closer inspection it was outdated and the bird wouldn't eat it.

That was weird for me but a simple reason I just didn't catch at first.

As a 501c3 we now we get food grants from the manufacturers. Sometimes it is so fresh I honestly think they made it the previous day.

Cant hurt to try a different brand.

  • Another possibility is that it didn't like the way it was getting fed, Maybe the smell of it reminds him of the method. Since you mentioned that they were tubing him. That's not the friendliest method from what people have told me when the tube is put in it can irritate the esophagus and crop, although I have only seen the method via video.

Is it possible that as a result it is preferring to be weaned? Does it look to staying healthy enough? With your exp you can probably tell.

    Keep me posted

  • It is definately preferring to be weaned but I am finding that its he still a bit young to actually wean, he tries but food keess falling from it mouth. He looks healthy and allert. I will go this morning and get another brand definately, poor thing if he doesn't like it I dont blame him, or if it reminds him of the pipe....thanks

  • Hi.I changed the formula and it seems to work...he is eating...still not getting that good feeding response but atleast he is not walking away and he does swallow it......I guess until he gets used to it, and that our of that syringe the good nice food is coming out..thanks

  • hi ... gave him another feed and he is getting used to it.....he is actually swollowing food down and seems to be enjoying it........thanks

  • Awesome! I am glad your baby is fine. If I can help even only one person I am happy.

Awesome! I hate death. Birds die easily on feeding mishaps. I am glad this one worked out! So I don't have to get called names this time.

God love you and your baby bird. :-)

  • NP! I didn't actually do anything, But glad to bounce ideas. I am so happy you found a solution to your birdies eating problem.

  • As for the fprmula i give it at 104......I know when the crop is full or empty so don't worry....I know. I am only finding it strange that he doesn't give me the feeding response...he is adorable and he seems happy to play and already steps up on command and he comes for kisses. I think I may start breeding again so that hopefully people will not buy from petshops. Here in Malta very few people go to breeders unfortunately....

  • Hi Thanks for the reply...please note that i got this unweaned cockatiel cause I had my own handfed birds before and I saw that the petshop had to many birds to handfeed and admitted that they had passed their feeding time by 40min....I felt sorry for the birds and if I could I would have got them all. I never had a bird with no feeding response and that is why I posted my question. I am leaving millet and other crumb food in the cage and he does go and see and nibbles it as well....

  • Great. I didn't have a lot of info so I was trying too be as through as possible. Good luck with your little one.

    Thanks for your comments.

  • hi I got my baby cockatiel from the petshop he is 4-5wks old...at the petshop they used to feed with the pipe down to the crop...Now I am having trouble to get the feeding response so that he eat...what can I do?

  • You got a bird from a pet store that's not fully weaned? I wish pet shops would STOP doing that! This will take a couple responses.

Any how lets see if I can help you.

Preferablly go back VERY soon and tell them to finish their job and you can pick it up in a couple more weeks when it is eating bird food. Hand feeding does NOT make you bond better with a bird any more than if you get a bird after it is weaned. Especially if your having stress now trying to feed it.

  • You should have had a schedule that the bird was on when you picked it up. possibly 2 - 4 times a day. This depends on the bird.

I suggest using a spoon or eye dropper. Watch the video responses to this video. make the bird formula more thin than thick at look warm. NOT over 106 degrees. better to feed more often than to make it to think so they can't digest it.

In between your feedings you should have all kinds of weaning food available that your baby can play with and try in its cage.

  • I suggest Harrison's Organic crumbles. You can even use their baby formula. Go to the vet and get some if you can afford it.

Bowl #2 - some pellet - parakeet size. Its a little sweeter and colorful. if you sprinkle it in the bowl and the bird watches you it will get curious.

Hang Millet seed all over the place its cheap and will keep your bird alive if it starts to eat some of it.

  • Use an eye dropper and rub the juice on the beak where the side at the crack. Hopefully it will open its beak. Only drop in a few drops at a time so you won't drown it. The bird gets some of it IN its beak. Apple-orange-grape, etc. Loaded with vitamins and antioxidants.

Don't get in a hurry. Do it until the bird refuses to take any more. You should see a round bulge in front of its neck. = That means the crop is full.

Wait till the crop is empty before doing it again to avoid infections.

  • If the bird Bobs its head... Thank GOD... but it probably won't due to the technique used was a breeder method like the one above. It's OK if you make a mess you can clean that off.

You can also MIST, NOT DRENCH the bird and when it preens it will get some water.Clean your water every day.

You can also have a bowl with TINY pieces of fruit or even Crushed up crackers or bread. they get attracted to both. NO SALT, NO CHEESE, OR DAIRY PRODUCTS. except scrambled eggs. Scrambled eggs are good.

  • im not sure if i should hand feed one of the baby budgies because idk if she/he will bond well with me. basiclly is it worth my time to hand feed a baby budgie

  • GO to your local pet store and buy baby feeding formula. Use a spoon if you have questions. NOT a seringe this is a breeders method.

  • i just caught my birds breeding but the female(the one with the brown cere) was on top. im not sure if his/her beak is dirty and its really blue or purple. but the the one on the bottom has a veryyyyy light blue almost white cere. i just got my nest box in their cage and im hoping they will use it because they just mated 1 day ago and how long will it take before she lays her first egg? please respond and thank you for your first response :)

  • Both Blue beaks? If so they are both males. One of them needs to have a brown beak. : ) Take the nest box off so they don't start to fight. If one of the beaks are really white or cream color its still to young.

  • i know the bird with the light blue or white cere is about 2 years old and the other on is about 6-8 months old so age shouldnt be a problem and their not fighting at all in fact they seem to be acting like normal parents the one with the brown cere never gos in the nest box but the one with the white cere does for about 1/3 of her day. ive never caught them breeding again though. are these signs of pregnancy or am i just crazy?

  • Sounds normal now that you have been more detailed.

If it were me... I would let the parents feed them at least two weeks through the very touchy time and let them get all the parents natural protection through parent feeding then ...

Use a spoon method and look up scheduled feedings and everything you can on amounts, temp. etc. ahead of time.

Remember if you get in a hurry and blow it, it can cost the bird its life.

  • whats the yellow stuff in the syringe called?

  • Baby feeding formula.

  • whats that yellow stuff u feed the bird through the syringe with?

  • Its Baby bird food from the pet store and you should use a spoon if your asking this question.

  • Can you use a spoon instead of that syringe?

Is that ok if you use that?

And when the bird is older can you just give it normal food

  • Yes you can use a spoon. Watch your temp closely. When the bird gets older you will need to start weaning it. Most people use millet then go to the pellets and such. You will know when they are ready to wean when they stop eating the baby food.

You offer more and more adult food and decrease the hand feeding to wider intervals.

Please make sure to study the proper feeding diets. There should be NO GUESSING before attempting to hand feed birds.

  • omg, use a cup to measure temp.

What a waste of precious water ;D

    But nice video anyways.

    What about solid nutrition?

  • Again this video was designed as a request response. I went to a pet store and this is a method used by their breeder. Not intended for home use. It is to encourage people to educate themselves.

    We welcome video responses,

We encourage video responses so people can get as much info as possible by watching them.

The method I personally would use is a spoon in my sanctuary. I moniter constantly for any infection, & keep all supplies sanitary and clean.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • It is a pity that the instructions are mixed with the voices on the video - difficult to make out.

  • There is no simple response.

It is designed as I mention over and over to encourage people to search as many methods as possible. There is no simple, fast method to replace bird parents. Birds were not meant to be captive in the first place....

Just my personal opinion, for what its worth.

This is NOT a home use method, rather than a professional method.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • It's a pity that the instructions are confused by the sounds on the video - difficult to make out.

  • Thanks!!!

  • Is this the proper way to also feed a sick Blue Crown who needs to be fed ?

My Blue Crown is almost 6 and has had a seizure and is very sick . searching for help ..

  • No you take it to the vet and follow his instructions.

  • I've found you can start feeding birds with a teaspoon as soon as 1 week old.

  • bitch they were about to get run over do you expect me to leave them there i asked people no one knew so i kept them $#@%* fub hola senor

  • wait..how do you know when the bird wants food and when the bird wants to stop eating? And how long do i have to stay with the bird?lol im sry but im confused..i was looking for a baby macaw to adopt and i need to know how to feed newborn macaws?any advice OverTheRaynbow?

  • My advice is that this method is what many breeders use due to the number of birds to be fed. use a spoon if you are a beginner and MUST feed them.

Still that is not a guarantee. Stop feeding them when the crop is full.

Please let the breeder finish their job and wean them.

  • 2:04 what kind of bird is this?

  • A cockatiel.

  • are you dutch?

  • it sucked jk yes it worked i have 2 birds that i found on the floor but i could not feed them thanks alot now i know lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lmao dont know why i laughed they died when i did that that looks like it hurts

  • You can also use a spoon. This is only one method.

  • they died because of you mf fu fu fu fu fu

  • No they didn't. They died because you were doing something your not qualified at.

I constantly tell people this video was made as a request. I tell people all the time that it is a dangerous to do something they are NOT experienced in. WHY do people get birds that are NOT weaned I will never know.

If you have never seen other methods and just went and hand fed a bird based on this video.

AGAIN!!!! It is dangerous to do if you are not experienced, in case you weren't reading that day.

  • If you found the birds in your back yard you should have taken them to someone qualified to direct you in person.

  • reale thank you for this video

  • You are force feeding and have no idea how to feed corectly - you will cause many birds to die and frankly you are the uneducated one here - I happen to run a real sanctuary and if I had the number of birds in need of weaning as your showing on this video then I would have the animal welfare involved and not make stupid videos about it to make force feeding a must for all. Pleaseeee!

  • Oh my god! You call yourself a sanctuary - your disgusting, this is disgusting. Why would you ask people to hand feed birds that should be raised by it's parents? This is bird abuse - in our country it's against the law to remove a bird from the nest never mind eggs - it carries a high fine and a prison sentence!

    Your one disgusting american.

  • In the first place, WE DON'T BREED BIRDS! We ONLY take in abandoned birds that were bred by others. Your suggestion would be what? Euthanize? Our goal is education. and your insult means?

We don't breed at all. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen every day.

Additionally how would you suggest we get EDU to people that find birds that have fallen from a nest?

Thanks for your educated and kind comment!

  • Unfortunately your comment seems more judgmental than an educated one.

  • "Our goal is education" are you serious you self important idiot!

Your video shows how to force feed birds choking them to the point of perhaps causing pneumonia or killing them - no bird should be hand fed the way you are doing this - you do not shoot the formular down it's beak you fool use a bloody spoon specially adapted for the purpose to resemble the parents beak and only feed at the rate the bird wants to take it in only when they have been abandoned.

  • Very informative video. The only thing is that it's a bit difficult to hear the instruction after 1:47 for those who are unsure of how to hand-feed. Thanks for posting!

  • how do i make the food i found a bird just now and it looks like its dying:(

  • It probably is :-( I hope you took it to a vet or called a humane society.

  • people here feeds their birds with bread with milk, sometimes mangoes ... my grandma has two birds and thats what they eat, same with other people who breeds birds

im a lil concern about that its that ok? because they dont really use a formula, and even though macaws and parrots are common pets here ive never seen bird formula on pets stores

  • i rescued three abandoned lovebirds from a nieghbors house the lady is elderly and i am a bit new to this stuff ..but i got them at two days..and now itz a month they are lookin healthy but im still scared i dont when to wean them

  • Hopefully you have been putting seed and millet in the cage for them to eat on their own. You feed them less and less. When they stop wanting you to feed them its time to stop.

  • hahah i like the green birdy..♥

  • i have a baby cockatoo how much do i feed it and how long do i wait after each meal and how hot do i put it ans sinriench size

  • WHY do you have a Cockstoo you don't know how to feed? Why would you be looking online instead of at a vet or the breeders, on an UN-WEANED BIRD?

PLEASE TAKE THIS BIRD TO A PET STORE/ VET/ BREEDER TO FINISH THE JOB.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THIS BIRD LIVES?

  • i messed up its a cockatiel i fed it alredy jus dont know how often i feed it when it whines for food

  • yes your right but some birds are differnt in alot of ways and agin if you buy a baby bird you should no how to feed him/her befor taking it home

  • I dont understand how the formula is mixed? Do you put the thermometer under the water wait for the right temp then mix it with the formula?

  • oooooooooooh plz help me.. i had 5 new born robin birds im taking care of one dies..plz help me i dont know what to feedthem and how to care for them....plzzzzzzzzzz help me ...they live in a nest on my window seal...i been taking care for them for the past 2 day ..i dont want the others to die... i been feeding them bread and water .plzzz help me

  • Go to the pet store and get an eye dropper and some baby bird food. even baby food would be better than water and bread. try to make it 102 - 108 degrees, so it will digest fast enough.

feed them every 1 - 2 hours for a week between 9am - 9pm. Week 2 feed them every 3 - 4 hours. until they stop bobbing their heads. You will need to do this today or I am afraid they are all going to die. After that some wild bird seed and stuff out near their nest. let them look for it themselves. or millet.

  • HOW MUCH DOES AN AFRICAN GREY PARROT COST?

    I LIVE IN MICHIGAN

AND WHAT AGE CAN U GET ONE WITHOUT THE MOM?

    plz help

  • I would recommend a minimum of 10 weeks, maybe 12. I have heard of it taking 13 even.

Why would you be in such a hurry to tear it away from the mom ASAP? If hand fed properly they are wonderful birds either way. If held gently and the breeder has a good relationship with their birds. healthier also. At least a couple weeks for good immune resistance.

Birds normally don't like offspring to remain after fledging anyway.

Patience makes a better pet, if you do it right.

  • how often do you have to feed a cockatiel and for how long?..

  • This is certainly not a BAD way to feed baby birds--gavage feeding is rough, though. There are many different options, and syringe feeding is so much easier and cleaner.

  • what formula do you use for monk parakeets or quaker parrots and how long do u have to wait before handfeeding them?

  • I imagine that dried insects food at pet stores liquified to the right temperature would help baby birds too-right?

  • hi, if using a spoon to feed do you keep the temp. the same as you mentioned in this video?

    thank you

  • great video it will help me with hanfeeding my budgies they had 7 eggs so far 5 have hatched i,ll be rechecking this video

  • Great video

  • bonjeur sauva bian

  • bonjeur sauva bian

  • bonjeur sauva bian

  • I used to soak sandwich bread in formula milk and let my baby birds pick form my fingers like they would do from the beak of their parents. they didn't regurgitate or drop excess liquid like in this video. They didn't make this mess and they bonded with me really nicelly.

  • I love that. Very nice for bird owners to bond.

  • I'm really uncomfortable with syringe feeding... It's fast, rough, and you don't develop the same strength of bond with your bird. I like to do things as naturally as possible, and as softly as possible, with birds of all types.

  • Same here. However I like to educate the public in all methods available. There are still good points also. There are many different methods of feeding.

  • this video should be renamed "how not to syringe feed" that is just dangerous,DO NOT ATTEMPT TO COPY THIS VIDEO,

  • Why do you say that? if this is the wrong way (which I doubt it is) then do you know the right way to hand feed a baby bird?

  • There are many ways to feed a bird. Obviously you should have experience to use this method. the purpose for this video was to gather responses so people may see the many ways. This video was done by a pet store employee that can't sit and spoon feed or long methods for several birds that need feeding every other hour. They would starve.

  • Thank you for this, I have learnt a lot from watching this, & I should now get it right when I get my baby alexandrine in a few weeks time.....

  • You should not use this video as your training video. this method is being used by long time breeders that feed many birds at one time. I suggest you watch slower methods that are more bonding with your pet birds. an un-experienced person could have trouble with this method. I suggest looking at the attached methods also. and train in person with who is selling you your bird.

  • Oh no, I'm not going to copy the vid or use it as my main training, I just meant the syringe method looks cleaner & easier than the spoon method. I plan to use the syringe, but do it slower & with more love. A mother bird wouldn't be giving 20ml at a time, just a mouthful. Hand feeding gives a chance to bond. I also like the idea of checking the water temp, as that is utterly important.

  • Also the bird will eat what it needs, & drop the rest if not hungry, if it does that alot, it's feeds need to start being cut back. I have already done a lot of research, this vid just gave some good points...

  • thanks for the video.

i noticed that you plunge the syringe in one go.. is there a reason for this? i am currently feeding 3 IRNs and only dribble the food in as i don't want to force it down them

  • There are a lot of different methods. Some believe it helps decrease possible bacteria infections from less exposure. also the temp is constant for best digestion. It doesn't get a chance to get cold or need re-heat. If you prefer a slower method it has its benefits for bonding also. Up to the feeder. Both work.

  • However if you have a store full of hungry birds you cant take 10 min feeding each one when you have like 12 birds to feed either. They would starve.

  • oh i asked the person that is giving it to me and he said no. she likes to eat pellets off the hand like a regular parrot does. thank you though

  • i am getting an african grey parrot that is 12 months, it should still be hand feed right. i mean i will if i has to. what do you think.

  • I would hope not! please do more research. I am curious why that old of a bird still needs hand feeding?

  • we found a really young baby bird. it is extremely small and has no feathers. what should we feed it???

  • Take it to the local pet store or your vet fast!

  • Excellent Video! I know I took notes;)

  • reply back okay, what if your taking care of a bird during the summer, but the bird is located in a shade spot which it wont get burnt, also can a bird eat rice.

  • I dont keep any of our birds outside full time. There time outside is limited since there are so many viruses going around in the summer. I only feed birds COOKED rice. NOT RAW! Un-Cooked rice will kill your bird when they drink water.

  • i have a question on handfeeding baby cockatiels

  • Ok I just got a baby starling out of my barn, we feed him chicken starter feed(we hatch baby chickens) mixed with mineral water. He seems to like it and always wants to eat it. But after we feed him some he will start thrasing around and my question is do you know why hes doing that? please i would really like it if you got back to me on this so we can keep him alive.

  • And I did try using a syringe before, but I think he's more comfy eating at his own pace. He controls everything, as you may have noticed. :)

  • Well I am hopeing I get more video responses also that show handfeeding. That would be great. The purpose is so people have the education available.

  • Yes, that was me! :D I'll be uploading another one right now.Glad someone approves of my method, I was kinda scared I'd get slaps. Was afraid of aspiration, as I'm inexperienced so I opted for the spoon.

  • A lot of people do that actually :-)

  • thank you so much for this video!!!!

right now I am not in the situation to hand feed....but I might be later on in life, and it's nice to be able to watch the process rather than just read about it...Thanks again!

  • Just want to say he/she is growing up nicely. :D

  • Thats great! I think I seen your video of you spoon feeding? Was that you?

  • Oh, and I'm just so glad I looked up handfeeding on youtube. Hahah thanks again! :D

  • Your very welcome. Glad we could help.

  • Thank you,OverTheRaynbow.5-10cc, got it.:)And yes, I do check if contents from the last feeding have been emptied out. Seems like everything's just as it should be. I find it amazing how I notice the physical development each day. They grow fast, huh.:D

  • We raised hundreds of babies and never had to force feed any of them by pushing the food down their throat. We would let them bob and squeez out just what they would take. It took a little longer that way but they were always healthy and robust and well socialized and we always got top dollar for them.

  • Thats wonderful. As I mention there are several ways people hand feed. And good point you make. They do get much more socialized. And it does take more time and is worth it.

  • There is a higher chance of bacterial issues the more the food is exposed to the air. Many people use different methods for different reasons. The point of this video wasn't that you should only feed this way... It was to make sure your educated before you do it. If you prefer to use a spoon, by all means do so. I've heard of people finding a fallen bird and trying to feed it dog food. The results were not faverable. Its only about educating. To help people think, not the law.

  • Please don't misunderstand. We didn't use a spoon. We used a syringe we just didn't force the food into the crop. We let them take it naturally by swallowing it. I wasn't deriding your methods. I understand about the problems. We lost one clutch the mother was feeding to clymidia. It's amazing how quickly it happens. If we could, we would let mama feed the fids for a few days to help with the immune process. Also, we were very careful with and used a lot of chlorosan.

  • It's deffinately good that youy take the time. The birds are just wonderful the more they are held and time spent to bond. Hats off to you. Man thats awful you lost the whole clutch. Sorry to hear that. I cry any time I loose a bird I have cried over a fintch that went through envirnmental crash after coming to us from someone that had him adicted to anti-biotics and didnt tell us. :-(

  • Hi, I just started hand-feeding the last baby of my Lutino Lovebirds' first clutch. The other younger two died for a reason I've yet to find out, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and hand-feed the baby. Everything seems to be A-ok so far, but I'd just like to ask your opinion on how much I should be giving a 2-week old baby? Thanks Great vid!:D

  • At two weeks 5 - 10 cc's every 3 hours from 6am till midnight. as long as the crop is empty when you go to feed it the next time to avoid bacterial infections. At three weeks every 4 hours. Add a little treat cup in the brooder with millet or baby pellet food to offer for weaning they will play with it and helps in the weaning. I hope that helps. Also if you are inexperienced feed slower. Take your time.

  • We don't breed any more so this video was complimnts of a local breeder. I prefered the mix a little thinner than thick. Or I noticed it was hard to digest. Kind of the cnsistency a little runnier than ketchup.

  • Oh ya, I agree with you. I always say better safe than sorry :)

But I am NOT saying anything bad about you uploading this video, I think it is an excellent Idea because there are several handfed birds that die because they don't know how to take care of them.

  • Yes I agree. I wasn't offended. :-) You almost have to understand people have different opinions when you upload videos from the get go. Someone was actually trying to convince another watcher that all would be just fine and to takehome a bird that was not weaned yet with no exp even with birds. I put this up to help people know that there are many concerns in this area and it jkust shopuldn't be taken lightly.

  • There is a big difference between WANTING to hand feed your new baby bird , or a person thats afraid to... but the breeder is talking you into it, because that means less work for them. Fortunately after watching this video they said OMG they had no idea that so much could go wrong and decided to get a new baby and learn more before trying to take that on. It could have ruined their experience all together. that would have been sad, because birds do make wonderfu; pets.

  • The person who is feeding the birds are doing it way to fast, My bird I had raised and hand fed and weaned, I would slowly give it to her to her swaolling rythum. The way they were doing it could cause the bird to die from giving it to much to quickly. Just my opinion. Other than that it's a great idea but I think it will give the wrong idea about how fast to feed them :(

  • There are several methods of hand feeding. I do the same method you do. Mostly since I am afraid to asperate them also. However I do understand that the vet says you cut back on the possibility of bacteria in this method used. I HATE the tube method when they push it in the crop. Nothing personal about that method for bonding. Some even use a spoon. It's users preference.

  • Great idea to post this. Too many birds are sold when they are not yet weaned. As a parrot owner I would always suggest that people do not purchase an unweaned bird but if found in that situation this is an excellent reference source.

  • Yes I know. Even though its not the best idea. It still happens.

  • Adorable babys.

  • Nice video.

I know that in the state of California, it is illegal to sell an unweaned bird since 2000 (saftey issues for the bird-- potential for burned crop, etc. . .), and may be the case in a few other states, but I wish that I had a how-to video when I was weaning my green feathered human back in the 90's. (He turned out just fine anyhow, but videos are nice.) Thanks for being so helpful.

  • Your very welcome. Thanks for the comment.

  • Well this doesn't look like a Christmas party... but they ARE cute!

  • This was a Christmas party?

  • LOL No I was supposed to post their Christmas Party but someone requested this help video.

  • lol I was beginning to wonder!

  • what cute babies! Very useful video :)

  • Thank you. I forgot to mention that the formula works better than the directions on the package. Or it clogs in the syringe. And if you squird hard to get the clog out you can asperate the bird.
