  • One of the greatest films of all time. The more times you see it, the more you get out of it. A masterpiece.

  • Like a great bottle of wine or a classic novel, this is the type of film where you want to take in and savour every rich moment.

  • Lots of French films to recommend. I particularly like La Gloire de Mon Pere and The Hairdresser's Husband. Jules et Jim great too. This one probably best of the lot though.

  • Easily one of the five greatest films ever made.

  • Such a brilliant brilliant film. It has changed my whole perspective on video entertainment! Such a timeless epic in the midst of so many terrible modern films. It satisfies my romantic soul!

  • @gilatose There are so many of them ! Do you have a preference for an actor ? A director ? Have you seen " Boudu sauvé des Eaux", starring Michel Simon ? or "Adrienne Lecouvreur" directed by Marcel Lherbier (1938), starring Pierre Fresnay and Yvonne Printemps ?

  • This is an amazing epic. And the fact that it was made while France was still recovering from WWII makes it all the more remarkable. The French love cinema and this film is arguably their flagship example.

  • @frtw4428 - It was made WHILE the germans had occupied france...during WW2

  • @gilatose Jean Cocteau's 1946 Beauty and the Beast? With English subtitles here (youtube.com/watch?v=DaG3zns3fqA) Agree with nyjm on Marcel Carné's Le Quai des Brumes(1938), Hotel du Nord (1938) Jean Renoir's Boudu Saved from Drowning (1932), La Grande Illusion(1937) Tried Japanese? Kurosawa's Seven Samurais(1954) to name one. Cheers =)

  • Well, I'd think you could argue that there's NOTHING quite like the greatest French film ever made. However, if you're a fan of the STYLE, I would suggest Carné's and Prévert's earlier works: Le jour se lève, Hôtel du nord, and Quai des brûmes. Also check out Jean Renoir's films from the 30's, especially Grande illusion, La Règle du jeu and Le Crime de Monsieur Lange (penned by Prévert).

  • @nyjm I love the poetry of Jacques Prevert but this- I don't think there is anyway I would enjoy it. The trailer says it is France's answer to Gone with the Wind? I can't stand those types of romantic films.

  • @ar4216 I usually can't stand romantic flicks, either, but I really loved this one. The acting is perfect, and it's more than a love story; it really touches on human flaws and desires. There's much more to it than other romances, and I never felt like the plot was asking "Will Baptiste and Garance live happily ever after?" I would say give it a try.

  • @latieplolo Thanks. People do rave about it and I figure it has to be great, and I love the poetry of Prevert, but this trailer is uninspiring. Prevert was an avant-garde poet, yet this film looks so conventional. Perhaps it will be one of those films where after I watch it I'll say, "Ah, so that's what everyone saw in it." :) I wish Prevert had collaborated with Bunuel. Those two could have produced some interesting films.

  • @ar4216 The quality of the print in this trailer is very muddy; you need to see it in a good print. But it truly is a wonderful film. All the superlatives are justified. Beautiful, sensual, romantic, it's wonderful. Acting too lovely to be believed, except in the seeing. Bunuel was a different kettle of fish. He made some excellent surrealist films, but the old fashioned virtues of this picture shouldn't be undervalued.

  • @ar4216 This trailer, especially the voice-over, is a little stupid. To compare it with "Gone With the Wind" is a almost an insult to this film. "Children of Paradise" is traditional cinema, not nearly as innovative as "Citizen Kane", but as such it will always be my personal choice as the greatest movie ever made. And, I guess, many other viewers' too.

  • It's on Netflix watch instantly now!

  • This will be shown on Turner Classic movies - USA - Mon. Dec. 21 2:45 AM TCM (199) (All Times Arizona Time) (MT) - Check Local schedule for times!

  • Les Enfants du Paradis, released as Children of Paradise in North America, is a 1945 film by French director Marcel Carné, made during the Nazi occupation of France. A three-hour film divided into two halves, it was described in the original American trailer as the French answer to Gone with the Wind.

  • The film is being shown in Baltimore, Maryland, at the Charles Theater on North Charles Street on the following dates and times:

    Saturday, August 15 - 11 AM

    Monday, August 17 - 7 PM;

    Thursday, August 20 - 9 PM.
