@1ishara You don't have to be African to be proud of Manddela and Miriam Madeba....... I am proud and miss them both for not sharing the same world as me....... and I am not African. They are 2 people who have made a difference in the world by their existance........... and will be missed..
I have read through almost all the comments. I have just this to say. Listen to both and artist, then you can tell who really made this song a beauty. Mama Miriam for me. The difference is clear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Soothes and heals...so soft and caressing,my wife drops it on when ever i get a lil `caustic`. RIP. Wish you lived longer to sing this song at the opening concert of the World Cup in SA. Angelique did a marvelous job by the way. Alhaji-Zest.

@alirpa1 Hi, just to let you know the language is actually Swahili the East African language its not the Benin language. The German group Boney-M actually are the ones who made this song famous world wide. Shame the guy who wrote it never received anything if its true anyay.
@alirpa1 from the country Benin? lol Benin is full of many languages just like any other country in Africa. But the lingua franca is French. And then you have the local languages...
@African227 the name Malaika miss Angel,She is singing for her Angel wishing he had money to marry her"angel".She say's she is in despair because He does not have the money to marry her
Malaika is a beautiful melody from the most beautiful woman that ever graced Afrika and the World. Everytime I listen to this melody, I am reminded of the beautiful women and men of my beautiful continent. Every time I listen to Malaika I forever fall in love again with my continent and I wish all its children will listen and enjoy Malaika.
I don't know why this song touches my heart so deeply. And the way she sings is genious. It's like all the love I have in my heart for my kenyan wife is put into this music. Great. Thanks for posting
This song is sung in Swahili, the first language I spoke. My parents took me to Tanganyika when I was 6 months old, to a place deep in the bush. My video has original footage, plus the lowering on the Union Jack on 9th December 1961. I have missed Africa, the warm people, the sun, the Swahili language since we left. This song takes me back, & credit to Miriam, who was a South African Xhosa, for her Swahili rendition.
I was born there in 1963 and Swahili was the language of my childhood... than back to Italy and to so many other places but Tanganyika with its people, its songs, its colours is always in my heart.............
@MultiAtomatom Me too. So much, that I wrote a book about my 15 years as a child in Tanzania. It's called "Speak Swahili, Dammit!" See my 11 minute video on youtube, under Speak Swahili Dammit. It has original old cine-film footage. :-) Also, if you like it, please put a comment under it.
I fell in love with this song when I first heard Angelique Kidjo sing the song which is about reverence for the Mother who is the Angel presence in every household.
@DolphinNelly Angelique Kidjo does a great version of this song also. Amazing how people like X1Satu claim knowledge without research. I fell in love with this song when I first heard Angelique Kidjo sing the song which is about reverence for the Mother who is the Angel presence in every household.
Rest in peace Miriam Makeba.
So touching, very beautiful song, sang with a very beautiful voice. Mama Africa I wish you're still around. You were too young to die at 76. May you rest in peace with your loved ones.
Thks for posting this beautiful song. I first heard Miriam Makeba sing in person as a child in Ghana. I didnt knw who she was at that time. Years later in Liberia she and Hugh Masekela helped us organize an artisists group. Then years, years later some friends and I stumbled into a night club in Mombasa, Kenya and this song was playing. We just got on the floor and started dancing while everyone cheered.
"Nakupenda Mama Miriam." Thanks for all you did for us!

@harmonypianist , thank you so much for posting the words to Malaika I have been looking for them for ages! Just stumbled across them here. I love Miriam Makeba and especially this song. Would you have the words to 'Forbidden Games?' another favourite.
@Steppkel If you speak English - look up the Angelique Kidjo version of this song. There are lyrics as she sings. They are pretty simple and shouldn't be difficult to translate into French.

Thank you, Paul.

I need a French translation of this song. Who can help? Any links?
Il me faut une traduction française de cette chanson!!! Qui peut m'aider???
Steppkel 1 year ago
@Steppkel If you speak English - look up the Angelique Kidjo version of this song. There are lyrics as she sings. They are pretty simple and shouldn't be difficult to translate into French.
