@ramases1 pause at 00:57. it shows kilocalories per kilometer per passenger and speed. The graph demonstrates the the bicycles are a very efficient means of transportation in terms of energy use.
Bicycle technology may replace some amount of commuting and various transportation needs, inventions like this really do give people more options than the run of the mill bicycle does.
But to say that bicycles will replace essential transportation needs is laughable. No matter how expensive oil may get, we all want an ambulance that is only a few minutes away. And besides, by the time gas prices are that bad, there will be viable electric cars to replace them.
@MistaTSluss Electric cars are, for the most part, coal powered cars and, regardless of fuel source, if we use electricity to replace gasoline in any significant manner we will be facing a whole host of new problems with infrastructure/delivery, pollution, and higher prices.
@pdxktv I disagree with the idea that electric cars are not a solution for most transportation issues. Electricity is an energy carrier, not an energy source. You can generate electricity in a whole host of different ways. Renewable technologies are becoming much more effficient, geothermal and hydro have been around for a long time and are becoming better, and even if we get 30% of our power from coal until such sources improve, the reduction in greenhouse emissions is still dramatic.
@7eardstapa7 Human power is a great solution for significant amount of the trips we take but we have over-subisized the automobile while making it unsafe and impractical to walk or ride a bicycle.
Human power is an excellent source of renewable energy that has the side benefit of making the power generator more healthy, not to mentiont he planet.
@pdxktv But I do agree that our society desperately needs a "Bicycle Renaissance". The Dutch are a good example of how nice communities can be when bikes are given the status and appreciation they deserve. Many of our suburbs don't even have sidewalks, let alone bike friendly roads. I think this is shameful. e'd be a hell of a lot healthier if we could and would bike for most of our local transport needs.
This bike is lame for one how do you get it to the beach, where do you store it, nobody is going to want one of those things. If you live in a Apartment you can just for get it. You would need a Garage for that and the cost for a bike like that would be through the roof. The Honeymoon on that bike is about 2 weeks, after that the excitement goes away and your stuck trying to move and store it, just like a boat.
@Corkoth55...By law bikes are supposed to be ridden on the street not the sidewalk. Most get intimidated onto the sidewalk by cars.Where I live a few cities have bike lanes.
Abulances? are you been serious? "Help my wife is having a heart attack" "Don't worry sir, we'll be there in 45 minutes" Yeah right Thinks like that are a great idea, until you come to a hill......
@TIMMEH19991 Yup, he's serious and I hear what you are saying, but consider this.. would you rather be drug on a stretcher or carried by a bike? In some parts of the world that is the only choice and if we don't stop wasting our petroleum and come up with better energy solutions then we might just be forced to use bikes for ambulances some day (and yeah that'll suck).
@pdxktv I agree completely about stopping wasting fuel, I have a design for a diesel-steam compound hybrid engine that should be capable of about 70% efficiency when used as a generator set (its not suitable for transportation), but I do think with a bit of common sence we can keep enough fuel for emergency vehicles!
Looks good. But even with gas prices where they are ppl will just continue to pay them and complain about it. Now, If I could get someone to ride it with me :P
@NinjaToastMan The enunciation is correct. There are two variants of the metal's name in current use, aluminium and aluminum (besides the obsolete alumium). Over here it's spelled Aluminum. Even retards should take a peek a Wikipedia before they spout off.

@LarryTheTubaBoy yeah that's right ... had nothing to do with anything else. it was all down to the miss interpretation of the *COUGH* ''American Language''...
@TheFlightlover yeh im a cyclist and your right, they are in the worst possible peddling position for leg power and lower back strain. I like the idea it just needs improving.
Hey everyone search for "Innovative Systems" on facebook and like the page. We need support and we need to show our school numbers!! It has over 1,100 likes already. Check out our website at innovativesystems [dot] siu [dot] edu
What we need to do is use fuel as sparingly as possible we don't need cars that do 70mph we need trains that can do 200mph yet carry our light weight cars that do 45mph. Drag is a drag it is why a train is so efficient with all of its equipment inline drag is reduced consideralbly. Bet the future will be folding cars that weigh about as much as passengers simple utilitarian rides.
if it comes down to that scenario, i might just rather die where i am. i won't be rolling through mcdonalds drive-thrus with mad max and my gold hoard sack, or walled off in my compound/bunker with year supplies of MRE's bottled water.
you may get the job transporting my coffin to the graveyard, but I won't have to be there to see it.
@unabonger777 Lol actual they are already using ambulance bikes in Africa saving a life every 9 days in rural Zambia. Check it out:watch?v=Tmqcv6d7mCs the upgrade is made out of bamboo.
@unabonger777 if u were living in a very, very poor country, i think that this it would be possibly the only ambulance that it could rescue you hahaha
Based on the style of car in your chart, it appears to be from the '60s, and its way out of date. Its very difficult to beat the effeciency of a modern rail passenger train. I racing bike might be close, but you are not going to cruise at 90mph on a bike.
@MrHobiecat it's not based on speed but kcal/km per person and has not changed all that much of the years. You can search images for "bicycle is the most efficient means of transportation" and find the graph and a lot more information on the subject.
@pdxktv kilo caleriies per kilometers per person is NOT a deterministic measure of energy, because wind resitance increases with the square of speed. At some point (speed) a car will get better energy/mile than a cyclist, because bicycles are not very aerodynamic, and a car can be. You would have to streamline a bike like a torpedo, and then you dont really have a bicycle anymore.
Also, cars have greatly improved in effeciency since the 60's. My 69 Beetle got 25mpg, my 2000 saturn gets 45mpg
@MrHobiecat speed is not a factor in this graph. If it were a key factor, a supersonic airliner would be considered the most efficient. BTW, my '59 Karmann Ghia got 35 mpg. My '96 Chrysler van gets 17 MPG. I actually find it's shocking how little things have advanced.
@pdxktv but speed IS a factor in measuring the fuel/energy effeciency of any form of transportation, so if you ignore speed, the graph becomes meaningless. A person riding a bicycle at 5mph is probably 100 times more energy effecient than a person riding a bike at 30mph. Sailplanes have flown over 600 miles just riding on thermals, with no engine at all. And comparing a 40hp KG to a Dodge van? Come on, in the '60s the average car got less than 8mpg, the VW imports were by FAR the exception.
@MrHobiecat most of the driving I do in the van is hauling a small number of humans. In that case, there is not much practical difference between the vehicles.
In many urban environments a bicycle can actually get you to your destination quicker than a car so the 75 mph cruising speed is irrelevant.
There is nothing misleading or inaccurate about the graph. If your goal is to transport humans and top speed is not a factor then the bicycle is the most efficient means.
@pdxktv when is speed NEVER a factor in any form of transportation?! Riding a bicycle with steel wheels on a train track, with a highly streamlined shell might be the most effecient means of transportation, but so what?
@MrHobiecat Please read all the words. I said "when TOP speed is not a factor". For example, the train from NY to DC vs. the Plane. They work out about the same even though the plane can go six times faster.
@pdxktv There IS something misleading in the graph. Why is Swimming - the Least efficient and slowest - in the middle of the Y axis and not at the very top? It is no use putting the label "1 1/2" (mph) between 10 and 30 because it creates a Nonlinear, (Non Monotonic even) er "axis". Walker, Runner, and "Horse and rider" are similarly Deliberately misplaced. I appaud your efforts but not your er "Marketing", nor the result, and suggest that Production'd get you into all manner of Legal Hot Water.
This looks heavy, slow, tippy and the steering is awkward. I would bet a buck those boxes are empty. First hill or rough road and I think you're pushing. I don't see the advantage over a regular multi gear bicycle with a lightweight trailer. Sitting down you cannot use body weight to help with inclines and downhill would be bloody scary.
@jurrien75 Racing bikes are much faster than any mountain bike, and pavement and urban obsticals are usually more damaging on impact than dirt and mud.
@killyouin1punch geez can't remember anymore - Some school or museum in Chicago. I was able to get permission. If you really want to know I can try to look it up it's been awhile.
Re: ambulance comments- If the person fell down due to horrible cardiovascular shape, then maybe the unique vibrations, sun or rain on the face, sounds and feel of the wind, and smells of the rider would tend to invigorate the patient. Heck, by the time you neared the hospital the patient might be in enough shape to start pedaling along and then bypass the hospital altogether, going straight into the rehab stage. A track around the hospital with hundreds of bikes circling, doctors in pit area.
I like your ideas, concepts and invention!..I'd say to keep up the good work, good luck and don't be detracted by the negative comments!..You took the time, effort and have the creativity to create something interesting and useful..Be proud of that!..I used to cycle daily!!.And the same types making comments on here are the same type that drove by in their SUV "or some other gas guzzler" and would yell out.."Hey get a car hippie"!.And there is no reason for that!.People are so ignorant and lazy!
@firestone003 true but it I bet you'd take it if you or other choice was carrying your kid on a stretcher, eh? Thankfully we are blessed with the option of Motorized Ambulances today in this country and I hope that never changes.
@pdxktv You actually think that all motorized vehicles will somehow dissapear at ANY time in the future? If we cant run ambulances on gasoline, we can run them on alcohol, vegetable oil, electricity stored in several types of batteries, or from street-car type wires hung over the streets, steam, natural gas, hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water, or even from the energy stored in large tanks of compressed air.
If none of these technologies are available, there wont BE ANY HOSPITALS!
@MrHobiecat No, I don't think that. Aaron Tarfman the creator of the Transformation Trike may believe it. Regardless, people use human power all over the world when they can't afford the fuel or technology. A massive disruption, increased demand, or reduced production of fossil fuels would currently make all the technologies you listed very expensive. I am certain renewables will solve this problem eventually. One of the easiest forms of renewable energy we can tap into is human power!
All the energy sources I listed are already expensive, for the fuel and the machines that utilize it. It presently costs about 45 cents a mile to drive a car. At 70mph, thats $31 an hour to drive. How many peole make $31? At $10/hr you have to work 3 hours for each hour you drive, making your effective speed 70/4 = 17mph, which is a good clip on a bicycle. So does eveyone making less than $10/hr ride bicycles? No, they dont want to.
@MrHobiecat and what is the cost per hour at 140 mph? This is silliness.
In my reality, I can bike to most of the destinations I typically need to get to in about the same time as it would take to drive. Cost per mile on the bike is a fraction of the driving cost including my time. There is the added benefit of exercise and the joy of riding.
When the distances are too great there are other choices. If we keep wasting our resources those choices will become limited and more expensive.
@pdxktv there is nowhere I can drive at 140mph around here.
If you buy a $2000 recumbent bike, and ride it one hour a day commuting, for 20 weeks a year (spring-fall) thats only 100 hours a year, or $20/hour - so it takes several years to get a nice bicycle down to where it costs less than minimum wage rate per hour ($7/hr). I commute halfway to work in the summer, and drive half way. When I lived in the city I could beat the bus cross town, but I could not beat a car.
@pdxktv You will have to spend time and money fixing up the used bike, and in the end the cost per hour of use is pretty much constant. Bicycle tires for commuting cost MORE than tires for a small car.
@MrHobiecat Don't forget cars need maintenance, too. Lubing a chain costs a lot less than lubing a car - except, maybe, at your bike shop where they appear to be really gouging you on bike tires.
@pdxktv getting a flat tire on your bike can double your commute time. Cheap bike tires are not worth the savings. And chain lube is something like $400 a gallon if you do the math. Nothing in a bike shop is inexpensive. But yeah, cars average 45 cents a mile to drive, and only 8 cents of that is for gasoline, most is for the price of the car itself.
@pdxktv BTW, the last recumbent bike I made only cost me about $100. That includes the $10 hybrid bike I converted to a SWB (like a Rans Vrex), $15 for the big seat, and $75 for Kevlar tires.
@pdxktv The bottom line, in Thoreau-speak, for any form of transportation, it costs a fixed amount of money to use it for one hour (or for any given distance). Most people have to work for a living, so the number of hours you have to work, to use the vehicle for one hour, effectively reduces the speed of transportation. If you make $10 an hour, you have to work for 3 hours for every hour you drive. At some point (wage), you are better off walking. Unless you get bikes for free, the same applies.
@MrHobiecat you are not better off walking because the kcal/km efficiency is lower. The point of this graph, btw.
Bottom line (in account speak)... you still have not proven the graph incorrect- you have merely attempted to change the parameters and you are doing so just to suit your preconceived notions or just for arguments sake (I am not sure which).
@pdxktv goto wiki and search on "Fuel efficiency in transportation". They explain it very well.
A fully loaded BUS is more effecient that walking. A fully loaded 747 gets better mileage per passenger than a Prius.
And I dont know any other way to explain that speed changes the effecieny of EVERY vehicle. Cars are rated for HIGHWAY and CITY driving, because the mpgs are DIFFERENT.
and the more people you pack in a car, the effeciency mulitiplys by the number of passengers.
@MrHobiecat Yeah wiki proves the point of the graph right off the bat & very nicely, thank you. Hey, are you just being a sneaky devils advocate?
But now I will end this entertaining ride through the virtual rabbit hole by invoking Goodwin's Law & mentioning Adolf Hitler's German Army who used both the bicycles & high-speed motorized transportation devices very effectively until they were, thankfully, done-in by lack of fuel, among other things. Best regards, Mr. Hobiecat Sailor.
Its a great idea but when minutes even seconds are critical factors it sucks its to slow for any kind of emergency vehicle. It may make a good hearse??.
@pdxktv your only Response is that it beats a stretcher? i think id rather take the stretcher over that thing, it would be a lot faster, plus, i may not die that way either. Who knows
@pdxktv - Great invention! Something like this will have a greater impact in the developing world. A LOT of products are still sold from carts which are hitched onto bicycles and a lot of products are still moved by human power.
May I encourage you to try and market your products in markets in India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Srilanka and so on?
On suggestion though - the easy extensibility of your design, also make it more vulnerable because people can remove parts easily. You may want to fix that.
Your an idiot mate, dont waste your time inventing this, maybe kids will like it, but there is no way anyone will buy that 100 piece shit box, its got no market at all! you need to study economics, you will understand.
For those who are interested in owning one, keep in mind that it's very expensive to get parts and to build something like this. Mine cost about $3000 and that was at a pretty deep discount. Since building this, I've become a pretty good welder myself, so I would just build the next one, but just keep in mind that it would be a pretty serious commitment.
Hey folks. It's been amazing how much interest this machine has generated. I've really enjoyed using it and have given lots of friends rides in the passenger seat. It's been world naked bike ride and Sunday Parkways. For tubybubi and loydabmx, I've ridden this at up to 14mph downhill with a passenger and the disk brakes work fine. I rode it with another friend 25 miles to Boring, Or. (yes that's a real town). The cargo rack never got built because nobody wanted to try bending the tubing.
@tnt303 yeah we were not planning on having the kid in the shoot but we wanted to show it being used in tandem. It was pretty safe in a fenced-in school yard. Later on the the kid is running the camera, btw.
it is a cool bike, I would make one with 4 wheels and make it look like a jeep, then the passengers could sit side by side, and it would have a truck bed, I have seen some 4 wheel bikes that look like old ford model Ts that you can rent at parks.
You idea is cool but, and this is a big but, I think is essential for this type of convertion to be able to adjust the seat position so anyone can pedal comfortably. The kid in the video needed to move forward in his own seat in order to pedal so this is basically an adult tricycle, and not all adults but only those who are in an specific height range. Anyone out of that range will be uncomfortable pedaling.

<3 avid bike commuter lol
MistaTSluss 9 months ago
@MistaTSluss Electric cars are, for the most part, coal powered cars and, regardless of fuel source, if we use electricity to replace gasoline in any significant manner we will be facing a whole host of new problems with infrastructure/delivery, pollution, and higher prices.
pdxktv 8 months ago 4
@pdxktv I disagree with the idea that electric cars are not a solution for most transportation issues. Electricity is an energy carrier, not an energy source. You can generate electricity in a whole host of different ways. Renewable technologies are becoming much more effficient, geothermal and hydro have been around for a long time and are becoming better, and even if we get 30% of our power from coal until such sources improve, the reduction in greenhouse emissions is still dramatic.
7eardstapa7 8 months ago

@TIMMEH19991 Yup, he's serious and I hear what you are saying, but consider this.. would you rather be drug on a stretcher or carried by a bike? @pdxktv I agree completely about stopping wasting fuel, I have a design for a diesel-steam compound hybrid engine that should be capable of about 70% efficiency when used as a generator set (its not suitable for transportation), but I do think with a bit of common sence we can keep enough fuel for emergency vehicles!

Based on the style of car in your chart, it appears to be from the '60s, and its way out of date. Its very difficult to beat the effeciency of a modern rail passenger train. I racing bike might be close, but you are not going to cruise at 90mph on a bike.
MrHobiecat 11 months ago
@MrHobiecat it's not based on speed but kcal/km per person and has not changed all that much of the years. You can search images for "bicycle is the most efficient means of transportation" and find the graph and a lot more information on the subject.
pdxktv 11 months ago
@pdxktv kilo caleriies per kilometers per person is NOT a deterministic measure of energy, because wind resitance increases with the square of speed. At some point (speed) a car will get better energy/mile than a cyclist, because bicycles are not very aerodynamic, and a car can be. You would have to streamline a bike like a torpedo, and then you dont really have a bicycle anymore.
Also, cars have greatly improved in effeciency since the 60's. My 69 Beetle got 25mpg, my 2000 saturn gets 45mpg
MrHobiecat 11 months ago
@MrHobiecat speed is not a factor in this graph. If it were a key factor, a supersonic airliner would be considered the most efficient. BTW, my '59 Karmann Ghia got 35 mpg. My '96 Chrysler van gets 17 MPG. I actually find it's shocking how little things have advanced.
pdxktv 11 months ago
@pdxktv but speed IS a factor in measuring the fuel/energy effeciency of any form of transportation, so if you ignore speed, the graph becomes meaningless. A person riding a bicycle at 5mph is probably 100 times more energy effecient than a person riding a bike at 30mph. Sailplanes have flown over 600 miles just riding on thermals, with no engine at all. And comparing a 40hp KG to a Dodge van? Come on, in the '60s the average car got less than 8mpg, the VW imports were by FAR the exception.
MrHobiecat 11 months ago
@MrHobiecat most of the driving I do in the van is hauling a small number of humans. In that case, there is not much practical difference between the vehicles.
In many urban environments a bicycle can actually get you to your destination quicker than a car so the 75 mph cruising speed is irrelevant.
There is nothing misleading or inaccurate about the graph. If your goal is to transport humans and top speed is not a factor then the bicycle is the most efficient means.
pdxktv 11 months ago
@pdxktv when is speed NEVER a factor in any form of transportation?! Riding a bicycle with steel wheels on a train track, with a highly streamlined shell might be the most effecient means of transportation, but so what?
MrHobiecat 11 months ago
@MrHobiecat Please read all the words. I said "when TOP speed is not a factor". For example, the train from NY to DC vs. the Plane. They work out about the same even though the plane can go six times faster.
pdxktv 11 months ago
@pdxktv There IS something misleading in the graph. Why is Swimming - the Least efficient and slowest - in the middle of the Y axis and not at the very top? It is no use putting the label "1 1/2" (mph) between 10 and 30 because it creates a Nonlinear, (Non Monotonic even) er "axis". Walker, Runner, and "Horse and rider" are similarly Deliberately misplaced. I appaud your efforts but not your er "Marketing", nor the result, and suggest that Production'd get you into all manner of Legal Hot Water.

A track around the hospital with hundreds of bikes circling, doctors in pit area.

pdxktv 1 year ago
@pdxktv You actually think that all motorized vehicles will somehow dissapear at ANY time in the future? If we cant run ambulances on gasoline, we can run them on alcohol, vegetable oil, electricity stored in several types of batteries, or from street-car type wires hung over the streets, steam, natural gas, hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water, or even from the energy stored in large tanks of compressed air.
If none of these technologies are available, there wont BE ANY HOSPITALS!
MrHobiecat 11 months ago
@MrHobiecat No, I don't think that. Aaron Tarfman the creator of the Transformation Trike may believe it. Regardless, people use human power all over the world when they can't afford the fuel or technology. A massive disruption, increased demand, or reduced production of fossil fuels would currently make all the technologies you listed very expensive. I am certain renewables will solve this problem eventually. One of the easiest forms of renewable energy we can tap into is human power!
pdxktv 11 months ago
@pdxktv you mean, bring back slavery?! :^)
MrHobiecat 11 months ago
@MrHobiecat and what is the cost per hour at 140 mph? This is silliness.
In my reality, I can bike to most of the destinations I typically need to get to in about the same time as it would take to drive. Cost per mile on the bike is a fraction of the driving cost including my time. There is the added benefit of exercise and the joy of riding.
When the distances are too great there are other choices. If we keep wasting our resources those choices will become limited and more expensive.
pdxktv 11 months ago
@pdxktv there is nowhere I can drive at 140mph around here.
If you buy a $2000 recumbent bike, and ride it one hour a day commuting, for 20 weeks a year (spring-fall) thats only 100 hours a year, or $20/hour - so it takes several years to get a nice bicycle down to where it costs less than minimum wage rate per hour ($7/hr). I commute halfway to work in the summer, and drive half way. When I lived in the city I could beat the bus cross town, but I could not beat a car.
MrHobiecat 11 months ago
@MrHobiecat And what if you ride a $50 garage sale bike or drive a $240,000 Lamborghini? Arbitrary figures don't really help your argument.
pdxktv 11 months ago
@pdxktv You will have to spend time and money fixing up the used bike, and in the end the cost per hour of use is pretty much constant. Bicycle tires for commuting cost MORE than tires for a small car.
MrHobiecat 11 months ago
@MrHobiecat Don't forget cars need maintenance, too. Lubing a chain costs a lot less than lubing a car - except, maybe, at your bike shop where they appear to be really gouging you on bike tires.
pdxktv 11 months ago
@pdxktv getting a flat tire on your bike can double your commute time. Cheap bike tires are not worth the savings. And chain lube is something like $400 a gallon if you do the math. Nothing in a bike shop is inexpensive. But yeah, cars average 45 cents a mile to drive, and only 8 cents of that is for gasoline, most is for the price of the car itself.
MrHobiecat 11 months ago
@pdxktv BTW, the last recumbent bike I made only cost me about $100. That includes the $10 hybrid bike I converted to a SWB (like a Rans Vrex), $15 for the big seat, and $75 for Kevlar tires.
MrHobiecat 11 months ago
@pdxktv The bottom line, in Thoreau-speak, for any form of transportation, it costs a fixed amount of money to use it for one hour (or for any given distance). Most people have to work for a living, so the number of hours you have to work, to use the vehicle for one hour, effectively reduces the speed of transportation. If you make $10 an hour, you have to work for 3 hours for every hour you drive. At some point (wage), you are better off walking. Unless you get bikes for free, the same applies.
MrHobiecat 11 months ago
@MrHobiecat you are not better off walking because the kcal/km efficiency is lower. The point of this graph, btw.
Bottom line (in account speak)... you still have not proven the graph incorrect- you have merely attempted to change the parameters and you are doing so just to suit your preconceived notions or just for arguments sake (I am not sure which).
pdxktv 11 months ago
@pdxktv goto wiki and search on "Fuel efficiency in transportation". They explain it very well.
A fully loaded BUS is more effecient that walking. A fully loaded 747 gets better mileage per passenger than a Prius.
And I dont know any other way to explain that speed changes the effecieny of EVERY vehicle. Cars are rated for HIGHWAY and CITY driving, because the mpgs are DIFFERENT.
and the more people you pack in a car, the effeciency mulitiplys by the number of passengers.
MrHobiecat 11 months ago
@MrHobiecat Yeah wiki proves the point of the graph right off the bat & very nicely, thank you. Hey, are you just being a sneaky devils advocate?
But now I will end this entertaining ride through the virtual rabbit hole by invoking Goodwin's Law & mentioning Adolf Hitler's German Army who used both the bicycles & high-speed motorized transportation devices very effectively until they were, thankfully, done-in by lack of fuel, among other things. Best regards, Mr. Hobiecat Sailor.
pdxktv 11 months ago
@pdxktv the chart is VERY misleading, and it was obviously designed to promote one persons notions of what fuel effeciency means.
