I guess the problem is that it differed so much from the prequel that its only connection was the setting and some names rather than the gameplay and plot.
S1 focused on the theme of discrimination.
S2 focused more on the theme self-recognition and identity.
Overall, I liked the game. But I suggest to think of this as a sequel story-wise only, because the game mechanics are very different. (Divided by chapters, two main characters and monster capturing, temporal allied npcs, listed quests, etc)
Man this game suck. Nothing compared to the REAL symphonia. I was really ashamed when I finished this game. only 2 real caracter, others have regressed to the states of secondary caracter. Emil suck at life and Martha is really anoying.
I liked both the first and the second Tales of Symphonia. In gameplay, first one wins by a longshot. Monsters can end up way too cheap if you raise them right. The voice acting was incredible. Most of the voices in the second beats the first one in my opinion. I only prefer Presea's original voice and Lloyd's and Raine's voice actors from both games are both equally good. I also thought it was incredible that Johnny Yong Bosch managed Emil's normal voice.
@LucienofTheLight I know that, but almost everytime Johnny Yong Bosch plays a character, he never changes hs voice. That's why when he played normal Emil, I was really surprised.
In my personal opinion, with this game...they should've just made a show out of it rather than a game. It tied up the remaining loose ends...but the gameplay was terrible.
Tales of Symphonia 2 sucked period. I miss the old character's English voices. New ones suck now. and the worst part was 1st player can not play the old characters.
Tales of Symphonia had angels and churches setting the tone, and had a main theme of discrimination and equality. All in all, it was an artistic masterpiece. Dawn of the New World... STARTED with a bit of a demonic setting, and sort of mentioned it now and again, but it really wasn't heavy enough to make a good contrast to Symphonia, and it really lacked a theme like Symphonia had with the discrimination issue. It was a nice idea, but they just didn't do a good enough job.

Teth'alla was more advanced than sylvarant since they were the flourishing world. so because they are more advanced, they think of themselves as far superior

ToS had concentration camps, hypocritical leaders, and a main antagonist (and some protagonists) that had racism and discrimination set the entire theme for their characters. Richter's main theme was losing a friend, and self sacrifice, which has NOTHING to do with social status. Emil was just dealing with who he was, and Marta was all about becoming independent. While those are fine, they made the game overreach itself.
@Usayasha Erm, Richter is not THAT much of a villain(he is an awesome character though) jhe reminds me of Duke from Vesperia, they have more personal motives than the TRUE viallains. I mean the threat through the first part of the game was the Vanguard dudes and how they wanted to make Lloyd and gang look bad and assure Tethealla's dominion, especially Marta's father, who is kinda of this word's Alexei(also from Vesperia)
@Usayasha I beg to differ. The discrimination issue was still very present in Dawn of the New World. The Tetheallans discriminate against the Sylvaranti the entire way through the game. If thats not enough discrimination for you, I dunno what is. Another theme is self value. Emil never valued himself. He valued Ratatosk and Marta. Later in the game, Emil finally starts to value himself (not saying how, for the sake of spoilers). Self value and personal growth are huge themes in this game.

They had major conflicts over it, but there were barely any minor ones. That theme seemed to go away whenever it wasn't relevant, which was often enough that it seemed to almost be a non-issue.
They overreached themselves, because they tried to be good and independent while complimenting the original. It just wasn't good enough.
@Usayasha I think they focused more on the relationship between Emil and Marta. It actually was one of the most romantic games I've played, so I guess they pulled off that part right.
they made richtor to replace kratos. think about it. same red hair. same purple outfit. uses magic and a sword. switches from good to evil. just like kratos.(but not as cool)
@silverwolflucky 2nd's definitely not as good as the first. The first symphonia was probably my favorite game as well and the 2nd was definitely a huge dissapointment, but it wasn't really that bad and is worth checking out in my opinion
@silverwolflucky The original is better but one thing I learned is the reviews of devoted fans can be very bias. No, the game is not as good as the first but it was still enjoyable to me. I recommend renting it than buying it, but you have to play it. This game was more of a spin off than a squeal to me, but I still had fun with it.
@silverwolflucky You can't manually travel from place to place anymore... so no more running around and exploring... the game itself reminds me of Pokemon mystery dungeon where as you cant travel to and from places... I personally loved this game. I enjoyed the distinct personalities. I've never seen a boy like Emil be a main character, so I find that pretty cool. I loved the music and I had fun throughout the storyline. And never once did I skip the opening :P Maybe it's just because I loved the romance included. I'm a sucker for romantic stuff. I think they should've saved Alice and Dexus for a different tales game. They were wasted on this piece of crap that they hastily put together. I thought they were going to be new people that would be added on to the team in the game...but i was wrong. I thought Alice was going to be an angel and Dexus was badass. I have to admit, I actually like the protagonist characters Emil and Marta better than Llyod and Colette.
They just seem to me to have more substance and character because they are more realistic. The first ToS characters where perfect. They didn't have a developement. Llyod was perfect from the beginning, as well as all the other characters. They didn't change at all. Emil and Marta however, had a huge developement during their journey. Due to that, they are way more realistic.
@NailimixamSamaro How was Lloyd perfect? He's a brash kid at points, butting his head where he shouldn't. Ultimately his determination and brashness does save Colette but he seems foolish at time. Genus is kind but has a troubled history, is shunned by many and lacks courage. Lloyd throughout the story learns that there is more to fighting than just having the biggest sword (As Kratos demonstrates when they discuss why he chose to wield 2 swords instead of the typical sword/shield combo)
@akewoo thats not the point what im saying is that Riane is a healer thats why he aliment is water cause water=healing plus if you look at the healing abilities you can clearly see they are mostly water type magic

I know it's probably 'symbolic' of her water attributes, but that irritates me because it clashes with her strong aversion to water in the first game, and thus irritates me. I dont know how people expect a sequel to be as good as the original game. A sequel its an expansion to the history so it cant be as epic and awesome as the first one. Most comments i read say : "This cant stand up to the original" its ok to compare two mothership games (like Tales of Vesperia vs Tales of Symphonia) but not a mothership to its sequel since its obvious the sequel will lose.
This game sucks so fucking bad that if I bought it, opened up the case only to find a post-it with the words "DUMB IDEA" written on it and a picture of someone giving me the finger attached, I would STILL find that to be better then the game itself. I'm not gonna say I'm fanatic about it or anything, but I played this over at my cousins while staying there for awhile and I loved this game. Woulda bought my own copy if I had a Wii myself. I really like all the tales games I've played, wish more of them actually made it here to the US...
I personally LOVE this game! I think Emil is adorable, I love the story, and I love all the old and new characters(besides Alice. Bleh). Ive played the first one of course but I actually am crazy about the second one despite what most others say about it :P
ToS 2 was..kinda not that great for a Tales game....I mean they had a slightly new story and new characters...but it was set in a Mothership title that kicked ass by itself...Lloyd was made out as a bad guy too DX *but it made it interesting I suppose*
And also...Pokemon....and lack of original voice actors. I was scarred by Zelos' voice...
I just have 2 problems with this game, one the some of the voice actors are different and to my knowledge you can't use the gamecube controller which would make it sooooo much easier for me XD
lol i dont know if its only me, but playing this, i couldnt stand marta. she was very annoying, and always whining for emil constantly. this is my first tales game, and only one ive tried, and it probably would have been better if i played the first one, but overall an okay game =/
@leeko617 It's your first Tales game? Oh no! No no bad one to start with. A lot of the story in this game would be confusing without playing the first. Indeed Marta is a pain in the rear.. and a lot of the characters were messed up from the original. The game is entertaining in it's own way but it doesn't have that real... "Tales of Symphonia" feel to it. Only the towns in game give you the feel and some of the story when it came to the first game but that's it. Try the first game out, trust me.
@VenusAdept the game was also unchallenging, slow , unlikeable characters, and not nearly a strong story compared to other tales games. A disappointment of a Tales game imo, and especially to the sequel of one of the best Tales games
Hmm.. this game was a very good find for me. Tales of Symphonia was the first Tales game I ever played, and is still one of my all time favourite games, and while the sequel hardly compares in depth and overall goodness, I think it's good in it's own way. The main reason people dislike it so much is because they are expecting it to be as fantastic as the original, but let's face it sequels can never hold a flame to the original. This game may not have been as amazing, but it was still great.

The opening really cool. It would be cool if they made a anime series. Just like Tales of Symphonia OVA. This would be so cool. The voices for ToS2 they fit them good. Like Emil, Marta, and Tenebrae. XD

Tales of Symphonia 2 couldn't stand up to the first. But, it has some very nice points to it. I enjoyed seeing the old characters again even if they had different voice actors. In the end, it is good enough to have the Tales Of Symphonia name.
If this game was called 'Tales of Ratatosk' it being its own game, it would be much better. I still liked the game, story was interesting. I don't mind it not being a true Tales of Symphonia 2.

I perfer this OP over the japanese opening, The instruments help express the scenes better and make them more intresting, While the japanese OP is like a random japanese song, put in to mix with the anime scenes..it just doesnt fit IMO. =)
Im still undecided whether i should buy this game when it is released. From what ive seen you barely get to play with any of the original characters except regal and sheena. I dont understand why genis and raine disappear for such a long time until the end of the game.

Maybe because Emil and Marta are the only fully playable characters? You get Lloyd and the others, sure, but they have level caps and you can't change their gear.

I dont know how people expect a sequel to be as good as the original game. A sequel its an expansion to the history so it cant be as epic and awesome as the first one. Most comments i read say : "This cant stand up to the original" its ok to compare two mothership games (like Tales of Vesperia vs Tales of Symphonia) but not a mothership to its sequel since its obvious the sequel will lose.

This game sucks so fucking bad that if I bought it, opened up the case only to find a post-it with the words "DUMB IDEA" written on it and a picture of someone giving me the finger attached, I would STILL find that to be better then the game itself. This game is a gian middle finger to tales fans everywhere, and ill be suprised if namco tales sells anything ever again after the brutal ass raping we recived from this game.

Oh my god, FUCK this game. Fuck emil and his whinney, puss-ass atitude, hes the worst protagonast ever. Fuck marta and her annoying pearsonality. Oh your in love with emil marta? I COULDNT FUCKING FIGURE IT OUT. The only way they could make their shitty paper thin "realation ship" any more obvious is if they just flashed SHE LOVES HIM across the screen every 5 seconds. I personally LOVE this game! I think Emil is adorable, I love the story, and I love all the old and new characters(besides Alice. Bleh). Ive played the first one of course but I actually am crazy about the second one despite what most others say about it :P

ToS 2 was..kinda not that great for a Tales game....I mean they had a slightly new story and new characters...but it was set in a Mothership title that kicked ass by itself...Lloyd was made out as a bad guy too DX *but it made it interesting I suppose*
And also...Pokemon....and lack of original voice actors. I was scarred by Zelos' voice...

lol i dont know if its only me, but playing this, i couldnt stand marta. she was very annoying, and always whining for emil constantly. this is my first tales game, and only one ive tried, and it probably would have been better if i played the first one, but overall an okay game =/

@leeko617 It's your first Tales game? Oh no! No no bad one to start with. A lot of the story in this game would be confusing without playing the first. Indeed Marta is a pain in the rear.. and a lot of the characters were messed up from the original. The game is entertaining in it's own way but it doesn't have that real... "Tales of Symphonia" feel to it. Only the towns in game give you the feel and some of the story when it came to the first game but that's it. Try the first game out, trust me.

Hmm.. this game was a very good find for me. Tales of Symphonia was the first Tales game I ever played, and is still one of my all time favourite games, and while the sequel hardly compares in depth and overall goodness, I think it's good in it's own way. The main reason people dislike it so much is because they are expecting it to be as fantastic as the original, but let's face it sequels can never hold a flame to the original. This game may not have been as amazing, but it was still great.

I was really disappointed with this game. It's NOWHERE near as epic as the first ToS, i mean not even close.
It's not a bad game, though. It's actually pretty good. In my opinion, it shouldn't have had anything to do with ToS. It should have been its own game by itself, like "Tales of Ratatosk" or something.
It also would have been a lot better if the main characters were the same as the first game. Lloyd's voice is terrible and his role in the game is stupid IMO. And no Kratos :(

Tales of Symphonia 2 couldn't stand up to the first. But, it has some very nice points to it. I enjoyed seeing the old characters again even if they had different voice actors. In the end, it is good enough to have the Tales Of Symphonia name.

Because the original cast would have been too expensive and this was a 'budgeted' title. Unfortunately :( But, getting around that, I really did/do like ToS2. I got it when it came out, but I'm replaying it on a whim. XD
Oh, and you know there's a secret cutscene with kratos, right? Right before the end. I shall say no more, go look it up if you're curious.

I perfer this OP over the japanese opening, The instruments help express the scenes better and make them more intresting, While the japanese OP is like a random japanese song, put in to mix with the anime scenes..it just doesnt fit IMO. =)

Maybe because Emil and Marta are the only fully playable characters? You get Lloyd and the others, sure, but they have level caps and you can't change their gear.
