Half of these hits would cost over $20,000 with the way the pussy NFL is now.. Real football was in these times.. Sure would be nice if it never changed
Doug Plank played for the Bears from 1975 to 1982, when injuries & concussions forced him to leave the game, just as the Bears were about to be revived under then new head coach Mike Ditka. But he did leave a legeacy behind, the advent of the '46' defense which was named after his jersey number & his ability to play the LB position & rush the QB.
Hardest hitter of all time IMO. Just ask Jimmy Giles. This guy was like a frigging heat seaking missile out there. 1st time I saw him was in a game against the Rams. I was a Ram fan at the time. Plank and Fencik were like two sharks tearing into a seal. The Ram running backs were hitting the line of scrimmage like girl scouts. They were scared man. I'll never forget that. I believe Jack tatum doffs his cap to Plank in his book, "They call me Asassin". Alligator arms or busted ribs.....
The only Bear defensive back who might have been tougher than Plank was his teammate Virgil Livers (#24) who once played in a game with a RUPTURED TESTICLE.
Love it...one of my favorite players growing up. He would injure teamates in practice...and i believe they changed the rules to exclude spearing due to this guy!
Cheapshot artist.
