@Murnicor the main advantage of this mic is you get 2 for almost the price of one, also it is perfectly in phase relative to itself because of its fixed XY position
Is it possible to make a lead thats sends both mic´s signal to one xlr, so I can get the full signal into one track ? (I know that it will be mono of course ;-)
Hi there, I don't know exactly how much you know about this mic, but I have one and whenever I try to record my drums on it it comes out nothing like yours! I stick it overhead with a boom mike, but the sound is very, very, very quiet and there is quite a bit of hiss. Could it be something to do with the fact that I use a 5 pin to 3 pin converter before plugging it into my USB, because I don't have a direct 5 pin cable? I don't know :S if anyone has any answers
@TonedeafRob you get a lead which is 5 pin to 2 xlr connections with the mic, and u also get a 5 pin to 3.5mm mini jack (for ipod or video camera applications). Then you attach 2 normal xlr mic leads being left and right. I've found the mic to be very quiet with no hiss and very powerful, I actually have my pre amp turn almost off for drums. I personally think they should have added a 10db pad for loud signals. Email me privately if you need a pic or more info, Cheers Dean
NT1-A sounds good as well in front of drums about 4 feet away just above bass drum. picks up power from the kick and does good job of catching the whole kit with cymbals cutting through nicely.
Hi, great demo of what the NT4 can do. I would love to hear some ambient recordings (like a semi crowded room and a conversation, or outside).
I do have a question though: You mention no compression in you information box, but I think I can hear a gate running (you can hear the gate close quite clearly on the drum session start). Which leads me to the following question: with what did you record (in terms of amp and recorder) perhaps the video program does some unintended post processing?
Hi! Me and my band are interested in recording what we play in our rehearsal room, and we would like to ask if you know a good mic, and something you can plug in to your computer would be to prefere.
most mics are mono, this NT4 is stereo condensor. But a basic dynamic like a shure 58 or shure 57 will handle a loud band...see ebay for 2nd hand mics.
Ahh thats awsome :) Thanks a lot yeh im just lookin at buying mics and stuff and im really nwe to it all so just searching round for good stuff and your recordings are amazing i think i just need to watch that basics vid a few times to actually get what all your stuff is doing :D ahh too bad i live in sydney man haha cant wait till im actually that good :D
thanks mate, doesnt take long, especially if you're recording into PC with basic gear, lots of good tips on you tube, web etc. The hardest thing is training your ears (a purpose built acoustically treated room really helps...which I dont have) to create a decent mix, lots of flops, occasional successes, I'm still learning and never sure if it's right, takes years I reckon.
Just curious man when u recorded the drums was that just the 1 overhead, or was that all 3 at once, and what do u use the other 2 for? also where in australia do u live id love to get lessons sometime if you do those :D
Hi, Thanks for your comment. The drum and guitar recording was only the NT4 overhead, I use the NT2 for vocals, acoustic gt, drum ambience. The NT3 is good for vox, acoustic gt, but I mainly use it on hi hats. I live in WA.
Wow, the clarity is amazing. Certainly one of the best YouTube recordings I have heard. I bought a Tascam stereo mic to use for our barbershop quartets. Our budget was not enough to afford a Rode but I'm hoping the Tascam can give us a reasonable sound.
What an amazing sounding mic, makes the kit sound like, well fantastic! An it sounded pretty sweet on acoustic guitar too. Great review Dean! Might look into an NT4.
Ha! yeah, even a free mic would make my year. I'm not the most enigmatic sales person though..."YOU WANT MORE...FREE STEAK KNIVES WITH EVERY MIC SOLD TODAY", so yeah, that's not me. They have been very reliable though, 5 or 6 years old at least. I like their manuals too, very funny, down to earth, tell you not to lend them to friends etc, don't use as a hammer.
haha, free steak knives! Well...I'm not very enthusiastic when it comes to talking...I'm pretty monotone, so I'd be no good either. Ha, I like it when companies are funny in the manuals. I guess they figure not many people actually read them so they reward you with a joke if you actually do... Yeah, my NT3 is still serving me quite well.
Like I said in the video, the confidence in knowing that your overheads are phase coherent is a huge plus, so u only ned worry bout the close mics. I could easily get away with just this mic, and possibly a kick mic. Glad u found it informative.
It's beacause the pre amp is turned down for the drums, don't need a lot of gain cause the drums are so loud, therefore it's not picking up a lot of footsteps etc. I had another mic set up for my dialogue which was in the corner, right of the kit.
Oh and when I record my amp with my Shure SM57 I always get noises from things that are like 15 feet away when I just want to fixate the sound on my amp. Do I need to put my amp in a small room for this?
Oh, man! Thanks so much! This helps a lot because I just got a mixing board and I'm learning how it all works and that just saved me a lot of time and money. Thanks!
My simple question why dont u buy 2 mics and make a stereo couple your self ? :D

Thanks so much for the demo Naedsukram.
I currently have a Sony MS907 which is great to to use with my Canon Cam. But the Nt4 sounds really good.
I do mainly vocals and acoustic guitar, I would love to hear how it picks up just vocals and guitar together.
There are a few demo's of the Rode NT3 on youtube.

No gate, I just manually cut some audio out. Did it with pro tools and 002 rack, I had a Mann mic bout 4 meters away also, just picking up narrative.

and how does the 5 pin thing work isnt that a DMZ plug :S or double XLR just cuiours most mixers iv been lookin at are just xlr inputs
kentsmedblom 2 years ago
it comes with its own lead which splits into 2 xlrs for your mixer inputs

I found the info really helpful, because it shows the sort of sound quality you can get through one mic.
Great for someone of a budget like me.

Sound like you've gotta turn your amp up! More volume means less gain needed on the mic.
