@NyDrPa No, basically you are changing your dogs emotional response- so the end result is the dog is no longer aroused or scared by the stimuli and as a result they dont need to bark. Obviously if your dog got a big fright- like for example if the dog barked at dogs and you trained the dog to feel calm around dogs, then if the dog got attacked by a dog, you would need to do more conditioning to have your dog feel relaxed around dogs again. I basically worked for that one day with kiko...
obviously some dogs will take longer, especially regarding barking at unpredictable things. My border collie was reactive after being attacked as a puppy, and it took about three months to get her to be comfortable around dogs, but then after that she finds dogs reinforcing in themselves and does not need conditioning any more, even after getting attacked a second time, she still liked dogs.
If you want to see an absolutley AMAZING dog trick, please watch this video of Maddy the Springer Spaniel actually drawing! she gets hold of the pen, and draws in the notebook!! Is a absolutley great video, which is worth your time and is so great! She really is great at this trick and we spent a long time practising it. She is still improving it though.

hi I liked ur vid very informative wondering if maybe i could get some idea of how to deal with my dog who barks when people walk down our hallway outside our door. Would your method still work?
This is really good but my dog barks when my neighbour opens her loud and clonky gate. How would i get her to stop barking then, as i have no idea when she's going to open it.
HI. WE HAVE A CHIHUHUA MIX MALE. WHEN HE IS INSIDE THE HOUSE HE DOES NOT BARK. ***BUT*** WHEN HE IS OUTSIDE IN THE YARD HE BARKS WHAT SEEMS LIKE ALL DAY. IM JUST WAITING FOR A NEIGHBOR TO COME KNOCK ON MY DOOR AND COMPLAIN ABOUT THE DOG BARKING....WHAT CAN I DO TO KEEP HIM FROM BARKING FOR MANY HOURS STRAIGHT WHEN HE IS OUTSIDE????
Does this work with barking in the backyard? I'm having a problem with this and everyone is saying shock collar's and I'm like, "uh no thank you stupid." >.<
These are such great tips! Just what my dog needs for her fear-based barking at the door.
Question: My dog also barks when I put her in the crate and attempt to leave. I leave the radio on for her and everything but it doesn't help. I leave a peanut butter kong for her for her as well and it helps only mildly. Any suggestions for me/us?
I have a chihuahua and a mix, they barks every time someone enters the house, no matters if its us or someone else. I am gonna try to use this methode, hope it works :)
Great videos Kiko. Please answer this. How would I train a dog to not bark at something which I can not reproduce? For example, you are able to reproduce the noise of your washing machine. What if your dog is barking at something that you can not reproduce? My dog barks at my neighbor sometimes. He's a very well mannered (except in this case) golden retriever. I can't really ask my neighbor to stand outside while I give me dog treats lol. My reaction is to usually just say "No, Jinx!"
@ProBangers my dog barks when left alone.. he is outside in the yard, and as soon as i go out he stops, so i cant punish him cause he is quiet at that time, and he doesn't respond to treats cause he continues as soon as i come inside.. i tryed ignoring him when i come out so it wouldn't be that i came cause he barked, but still.. it doesn't stop.. i had to put my life on hold and try to train him not to bark.. wish me luck..
Dogs are very much "in the moment" so a clicker let's you mark the exact behavior that they should repeat. Treating with food creates a small gap between the behavior and the reward while the clicker is instant and simultaneous. Dogs don't associate 5 seconds ago or 2 minutes ago with reward; they believe that whatever they are doing when the treat comes is what got them the treat. A clicker speeds up the training process by a factor of 4 or so.
im not saying that your training tips dont work but in my opinoin, which doesnt matter, i think a coupe treats are good for yunger dogs to use in training but maby a little to muich treats can be a a problem because if the dog connects the sound with the treat, whenever that dog hears that sound doesnt the puppie look for treats from your hands?
I really like your videos, especially this one as my family got quite a problem with the dogs barking. I would very much like to try your method on my dogs, but I have a question for you in how to. Me and my family have 4 dogs, 3 poodles and one ½ poodle and ½ jack russel terrier. When first one dog begins to bark, all four begins to bark, and the barking is within 1 second no more one individual dog that barks, but a group barking. How would you train 4 dogs that's a group, not to bark?
btw, thanks for the tip about calling puppy tp distract him, wasnt sure if theat was actually positive reinforcement, so big-time thanks for clarifying ;))
thanks. guess if I get a mate to go noisily up my apartment stairs whilst I sit inside giving treats & praise to Barky here as soon as he stops barking, then I reckion that'll eventually work...
For the dog I'll use something low-end, like Meaty-Bites as treats, and lots of praise. For my mate I'll probablly use more high-end treats like bongs, and not really worry too much about praise..

This and the other 2 episodes on barking were very helpful. We live on our sailboat and our Schipperke has recently started barking at everyone who passes by or at other boaters doing work on their decks. I can't wait to implement the steps presented in these videos.
I think it's so great that you make instructional videos like this! I always refer people to your channel if they have training questions. I don't need to make 'how to' videos... because you already have excellent videos for any subject they need!

I'm having trouble identifying what sounds cause barking or controlling those sounds I can identify (neighbors playing or talking in their own yards). I have been trying to redirect the barking by calling the dog and rewarding for come, kennel-up, etc. I don't seem to be seeing much improvement, though. What do you do if you cannot control or predict the trigger?
Thanks for the great work. You have really improved our work!
hey emily my lab mix puppy cries when we leave her alone my neighbors might be stressed out because of her please help me i hope this video works :) thanks
dose anyone know to stop a chuiuahua puppy to stop barking when its in its house at night iv tryed toys treats in the house leaving him there for a minute then praising him when he dosent bark i am truly lost please help
I agree with some of your methods but food training to stop unwanted behavior I don't agree with. The dog did the right thing by kicking into drive & barking at the unknown washing machine noise. If either of my Malinois' didn't go crazy over an unusual noise I would be very upset, I want to be alerted by them, of course they don't go crazy over the washing machine off kilter. All I have to say is NO bark.
What about teaching your dog to stop barking on cue? I want my dog to bark and let me know when strangers are at the door (or window etc.) but I want her to stop when I say its ok.
Great post on training dogs not to bark! I use these techniques as well and they do work. My boxer was a challenge for a while but with positive reinforcement and daily consistency I was able to eliminate his obnoxious barking. He will bark when someone drives in the driveway which is what I would prefer to let me know someone is here, but he will stop when I ask him to. ~Jeremy
Very nice how you build up the exercise (don't know if that's correct English, but hope that you understand what I mean ;)) Cool that you did not 'edit' the part where Kiko barks at the machine during the training, because it shows us people that if something like that happens, you went a step to far in the training.
Great video! I've been searching for a way to stop our 5 year old Aussie rescue from barking whenever she hears a knock on the door (or anything else for that matter). Do you think that this would? It seems that she barks out of fear or being territorial, because she isn't an aggressive dog. I want it to be positive experience when someone comes to the door, but also alert us if there's an intruder.
@TheGraal-Good question! I reccommend using very small and inexpensive treats for trainings, because it can take a fair amount of sessions over time, but also because you should practice positive reinforcement daily. It does not take long for an old habit to come back if not trained regularly. ~Jeremy
@neosaber We have to train using things the dog likes. No organism on earth does something without being reinforced in some ways. People feed their dogs every day, why not use that food in training? Kiko in this video is being desensitised to a loud noise...this is a great training opportunity to make her a happier dog.
Great video, I watched close to all of your videos prior to adopting our 9month old rescue dog. She has a fear of vacuum cleaners - would want out of the room right away. I did basically the same that you are doing for the washer, for our dog with the vacuum (thankfully I've seen your video). I dont do it everytime, but we've done 3 sessions now and she will actually stay in the room now (in her bed) when I'm vacuuming. Keep up the good work!! Your videos are helping lots of people & dogs!! :)
If you raised your dog properly (I´m not saying you didn´t) so that it wants to please you instead of just eat your food, there would actually not be any need for the treats.
When my dog had a problem like that, I simply distracted her by giving her other things to do. Si, roll over, heel, etc.
how about not having a dog all you morons, you people are so love starved you need these dumb dogs for love , go out and meet someone of the opposite sex if you need affection
Excellent modern training and communication with an individual of another species, however it should be empasized that you should always see to it that a dog has its basic needs satisfied (thus taking away the underlying cause of problem behavior): physical and mental exercise, company for most of the day, and play/staying around other dogs not just humans
I like how she is training dog that actually aren't trained. I hate alot of the youtube trainers that have trained dogs so they don't show you all the problems that occured while training because there dog has already been trained
Great video! Now if only we could use counter conditioning to teach people to not be afraid of using treats, or lose the paranoia of having their dogs take over as "pack leaders!"
@InDogsWeTrust11 sorry i'm still trying to get this. is the Cesar Milan type of training incorrect? or not good in a lot of ways? Is it better to do just positive training ie treats and clicking? the cesar milan poking, submission stuff is all bad? Or could you use both? Thanks for replies, i'm about to get my first dog (since i was a child) soon.
@freddyphredphred Good questions! :) Yes, this chihuahua is afraid of the washing machine, poking, pinning or 'correcting' will only aggravate the fear. If the technique is 'successful' then the dog will shut down, stop acting out on his fear, but the fear will still be there under the surface-not a nice life for a dog. Emily is getting rid of the root of the problem barking by teaching her dog that the washer isn't something to be afraid of, that it is the predictor of good things (treats).
I'm intrigued by that. I don't mind that my dog barks when there's someone at the door, it's like having a living door bell. I do mind that my dog continues to bark after I've let the person at the door inside. I'm curious how I minimize the barking once I've "okayed" the person.
hello from germany :-) here it is much more popular to teach dogs the condition thing. Classic conditioning (Pawlow) and operant conditioning (Skinner). Both techniques assume, that a dog is unable to think and can be progammed as a machine. But the problem is, that the pack leader thing also doesn't work, due to false interpretation of wolf behaviour. In the last past ten years there are new ideas and researches in cognitive abilities of dogs. Maybe that could solve some problems?
Sorry but I would also be irritated if I had such a washing machine in my house ! You should get a European model, much less noisy ! I am about to try the clicker training (in the attempt to temper his behaviour in the presence of cats, other dogs, cows ans calfs outside the house) but there is no way I'm going to prop him full of food
I love your videos! I train dogs as well, and I think that you manage to show beginners a nice, simple way to work with their pets that doesn't involve shouting, pain, or any other kind of negative reinforcement. One thing I'd like to make a note of: My dog reacts negatively to the sound of the clicker, so rather than use a click when she successfully completes a new trick or command, we use the word "Good!" and are meanwhile helping her learn not to be afraid of clickers, slamming doors, etc.
i heard rumers that when clicker training evry few times click and prais him and not just keep giving him/her a treat so that when he hears a click he wont expect a treat is that true
so how would you use this training to keep keep the dog from barking when someone rings the door bell? My Boxer(4yr) and Beagle(4mo) both bark and rush the door when we have a visitor.
Hey man love your videos. I'm having a real hard time trying to teach my puppy to walk on leash. I use her favorite treats that she goes crazy for on a regular basis, but as soon as I put on the leash and collar I get zero response. She just sits there, very stubborn and does not respond to anything, no movement. Any help is appreciated thank you.
This was somewhat helpful, but my pitbull barks while he's tied up. I don't know how I can train him to not bark since he only barks when I'm not there. He has a loud bark which has become a big problem since the neighbors have already called the cops about him barking. What should I do?
@ferrari5o9o - For one thing, it's bad to keep any dog tied up when you're not home. Dogs can get tangled, strangle themselves, chew through rope, etc. Try purchasing a kennel like the ones you can find at Petsmart and train him to enjoy being in it the same way you would crate train a dog who stays indoors. Second, he's probably barking because he has separation issues. That needs to be addressed first, just like with Kiko needing to learn that the washing machine was nothing to be afraid of.
Hello, Is it really so big of a problem if the dog barks? I mean it's theire nature to bark at many reasons. Example 1) Some animal/human stepped into theire territorium. 2) stress/aggresive/feeling alone. I mean it's not of a big deal to have my dog bark whenever it feels like it, of course i go check everytime he barks (usually) to see whats the problem. Dogs are packt? I dont know the excaxt word but packtanimals, so yeah :-) Just my opinion.
Just wanted to say You are doing a great job of educating the inform-able public! Keep up the good work. It does my heart good to see how training has changed over my career. "Old crossover trainer"
super video showing desensitization. It's also great to hear the explanation of "over threshold" while showing what that means. When you can control the stimulus this kind of training is quite easy and relatively quick as long as you watch for this exact thing. It a great example of how this works for so manner reactive causes. So much more effective than yelling, rolling, leash popping, all the rest of old methods, that suppress behaviors instead of actually changing the root emotion involved.
Those are some wonderful tips for not barking. But how would I teach my dog (maltese) which goes on bike rides with me (He is tethered to my bike with a bike leash) and he always barks at people walking by or when he encounters other dogs that are walking. He is annoying when he barks. Hope that you can help me with this.
I have a 3 year old Corgi and 2 years ago my neighbour threatened her and from then on when ever they go to there rubbish bin or make a noise in the yard she races to the fence and barks at them. Will a clicker help, we have tried various ideas and nothing works, we have tried treats and when we are finished she goes back over to bark at them.
What if you can't identify the stimulus? We live in upper Manhattan where there is constant noise outside the apartment. Often we don't even hear anything but NYX will be alert barking anyways. When we acknowledge the bark (yay, you alerted us to a problem) she takes it as reinforcement and barks again. Ignoring = escalation. Getting loud and angry = subdued woofing for a long time (annoying!) I'm unsure what to do when I can't preempt the behaviour. I can't prevent the stimulus either Plz help!
is the real meat cooked and what kind? sorry have no clue...lol you're amazing!!!! can't wait to get a peekapoo...do you know anything about training them or do i need to know anything in particular dealing with small dogs? pls keep the videos coming..so helpful...god bless you and ya doggies..so cute!
Brilliant stuff in this vid-thx.....Pss i need that clicker you have and also my family's chihuahua is about the same size as yours And i only mention that fact because before we got one i thought that all chihuahuas were super tiny but nope:)
Thank you so much, this is exactly what I was looking for. I have a miniature schnauzer terrified at dog parks. Now i wont go there untill I have worked with her some more. poor thing. everyone said to throw her in the middle and she would work it out. how cruel. I will follow these steps and listen to her when she is scared from now on.
Nice video. Thanks

Yeah teach your dog not to bark. Its all good until one day someone breaks into your house while your sleeping and steals all your stuff.
Then you will blame it on the dog for not barking then teach him to bark again LOL.

Thank you.
I'm a little worried that my little dog will eat too many treats.
Is that ok? Do you have a threshold for this?
Can he have as many as needed till the training is done?
I've got a 2 month old beagle (smaller than usual).
TheGraal 1 year ago
@TheGraal-Good question! I reccommend using very small and inexpensive treats for trainings, because it can take a fair amount of sessions over time, but also because you should practice positive reinforcement daily. It does not take long for an old habit to come back if not trained regularly. ~Jeremy

training a dog with treats.....FAIL what happens when you need to train and you have no treats around....
how about just getting a new washing machine.....or buying a real real dog
neosaber 1 year ago
@neosaber We have to train using things the dog likes. No organism on earth does something without being reinforced in some ways. People feed their dogs every day, why not use that food in training? Kiko in this video is being desensitised to a loud noise...this is a great training opportunity to make her a happier dog.

My dog barks at random people at the front door, and if its time for bed she is alone a dark room. How do u stop barking in those ways?
AmazingGrace1234567 1 year ago
Great video, I watched close to all of your videos prior to adopting our 9month old rescue dog. She has a fear of vacuum cleaners - would want out of the room right away. I did basically the same that you are doing for the washer, for our dog with the vacuum (thankfully I've seen your video). I dont do it everytime, but we've done 3 sessions now and she will actually stay in the room now (in her bed) when I'm vacuuming. Keep up the good work!! Your videos are helping lots of people & dogs!! :)
thatcrazyjack 1 year ago
If you raised your dog properly (I´m not saying you didn´t) so that it wants to please you instead of just eat your food, there would actually not be any need for the treats.
When my dog had a problem like that, I simply distracted her by giving her other things to do. Si, roll over, heel, etc.

Excellent modern training and communication with an individual of another species, however it should be empasized that you should always see to it that a dog has its basic needs satisfied (thus taking away the underlying cause of problem behavior): physical and mental exercise, company for most of the day, and play/staying around other dogs not just humans

Great video! Now if only we could use counter conditioning to teach people to not be afraid of using treats, or lose the paranoia of having their dogs take over as "pack leaders!"
InDogsWeTrust11 1 year ago 24
@InDogsWeTrust11 sorry i'm still trying to get this. is the Cesar Milan type of training incorrect? or not good in a lot of ways? Is it better to do just positive training ie treats and clicking? the cesar milan poking, submission stuff is all bad? Or could you use both? Thanks for replies, i'm about to get my first dog (since i was a child) soon.
freddyphredphred 4 months ago

I'm curious how I minimize the barking once I've "okayed" the person.

agun17 1 year ago
hello from germany :-) here it is much more popular to teach dogs the condition thing. Maybe that could solve some problems?
inkanova 1 year ago
Sorry but I would also be irritated if I had such a washing machine in my house ! You should get a European model, much less noisy ! I am about to try the clicker training (in the attempt to temper his behaviour in the presence of cats, other dogs, cows ans calfs outside the house) but there is no way I'm going to prop him full of food
TheCendre0320 1 year ago
I love your videos! I train dogs as well, and I think that you manage to show beginners a nice, simple way to work with their pets that doesn't involve shouting, pain, or any other kind of negative reinforcement. One thing I'd like to make a note of: My dog reacts negatively to the sound of the clicker, so rather than use a click when she successfully completes a new trick or command, we use the word "Good!" and are meanwhile helping her learn not to be afraid of clickers, slamming doors, etc.
VrondiEyes 1 year ago

Hey man love your videos. I'm having a real hard time trying to teach my puppy to walk on leash. I use her favorite treats that she goes crazy for on a regular basis, but as soon as I put on the leash and collar I get zero response. She just sits there, very stubborn and does not respond to anything, no movement. Any help is appreciated thank you.

This was somewhat helpful, but my pitbull barks while he's tied up. I don't know how I can train him to not bark since he only barks when I'm not there. He has a loud bark which has become a big problem since the neighbors have already called the cops about him barking. What should I do?
ferrari5o9o 1 year ago

I dont know the excaxt word but packtanimals, so yeah :-) Just my opinion.

super video showing desensitization.

DangerousDavo1 1 year ago
What if you can't identify the stimulus? We live in upper Manhattan where there is constant noise outside the apartment. Often we don't even hear anything but NYX will be alert barking anyways. When we acknowledge the bark (yay, you alerted us to a problem) she takes it as reinforcement and barks again. Ignoring = escalation. Getting loud and angry = subdued woofing for a long time (annoying!) I'm unsure what to do when I can't preempt the behaviour. I can't prevent the stimulus either Plz help!
