...WOW...I'm Ukrainian. I've been crazy about hockey!!! Not only 'cos it was Soviet times in my country...I really love this game... anyway, I was 5 years old!!! But I remember this one goal!!! It's amazin'!!! When Helmut did it I said to my Mom "I want him as my father!!!" Long Live Balderis.
but of course ... USSR is a dead country. There is no more USSR.
Adding something from Ussr would be if we counted Mongolia as the most powerful country in the world, just because they had increadible military 600 years ago.
Logically - those players and whole ussr fed on ALL nations. E.g. first man in space wasn't russian. He was soviet. Therefore it wass achievevement or all together and every country separately.
@Slix20 though other nation presence wasn't that big on USSR teams... few Ukranians, I presume, maybe some Belorussian, Latvians like Balderis and Irbe later...
One more thing. Balderis was very fast for that time. He was one of the fastest players in the world. His parents send him to skating and them to hockey. But nowadays everyone is fast. You need to be fast to be a good player.
I remember when my dad told that he was kid he watcked it on TV how Latvian Balderis scored in final skated front 2 defenders. Winning goal. Balderis played in USSR (Russia) because Latvian national team werent. Best Latvian hockey player ever. And first NHL
That guy was absolutely amazing.

СССР это Россия!Единственный игрок в сборной СССР не Русский по национальности это был Балдерис и он играл в ЦСКА и Динамо Рига.
