Man you guys dont understand electric engines at all.......
Electric engines have better take offs than gas. There is constant troque. And there has to be a limiter on the power so it just doesnt lose traction when you hit the gas duh..... And what this built is cool. I wanna see you build one... If u dont believe me look you the worlds fastest electric datsun!!!!!! :P
Nice. I get the idea that its an expirement unlike some others. im interested in the duel power supply. I only know a little about electronic components but wouldnt the capacitors just dump a whole lot of power at once???
what ever happend to a simple brushless dc motor, with a high watt input, and potentiometer for the throttle and a whole hell of alot of batteries?, that way all you have to do then is utilize the left over space to make the machine more efficient,: putting generators on eatch wheel, or brake pads to recharge the battery/compasitor
changing a 0% efficient machine into a 95% efficient one, idk thats just me though. very nice machine though!
@dodgedart74 You wouldnt use a potentiometre, to control speed they are way inefficent due to heat from the resistance more likely to use a PWM (pulse width mondulation) controller.
right on battery powered genrators are the future, just know that motor rateing that is the rateing on the moter is that you get out of it , try useing les moters with highter rateing, take a look a roctet bike hes machine is pedele a genrator that powers the motor and bike best of luck, good work
i went there for work experience last week, and that building has got loads of technology that Chris has made himself. that Go-kart's motor also has the role of a generator when its slowing down, charging the supercapacitors, so its basically a gokart that can charge itself. genius!
fairly clever, you can't beat lead acid for amp-hours. lithium won't come close. Capacitors give you plenty of amps on demand, but presumably they have a limited burst
Is there a reason why you have a 6 stack of controllers on it, I have to say you make it look complicated when its not that bad. oo and Im glad you have a degree... btw! hehe
You've probably had a university education yourself, which is why you don't understand when real people express themselves, which is exactly what I meant in the first place.

I see the capacitor array-are they off the shelf units? Who wound the coils? How are you regulating discharge through the powerband? IE off the shelf componentry or something self-engineered. I'm just a hobbyist trying to teach my 9 year old son alternatives to 2 stroke Internal Combustion smokers.
@chrisransom YA MAN im in a percision mechanics class right now and we are also building a cart did you split your axel? our doesnt turn as well because we didnt.
dude.. its a nuclear power plant there??? look at my simple go kart

dumb!!! geez thats like $900 in lead a copper. 2 stroke engine is what you need

what are those big cylindrical things on the left on the plate behind the driver?
they look like coils. What are they for?

If you just replaced all that shit with some decent batteries and a bigger motor it would go much faster!

I was expecting 90kW and 230 kmh topspeed.. we got 1/10th of that.
Anyhow, a marvel of engineering skillz.

I hope he doesnt plan to sell that. The production cost will be through the roof and you have to have a degree fron MIT just to charge it.
gurinski 2 years ago
Lead-acids are pretty easy to charge actually, just get a charger from like Batteries Plus.
Supercapacitors are even better, just hook them up to a constant-voltage source until they stop drawing current.

Is the capacitor an off the shelf item?
p51joe 3 years ago
dude you got it all wrong.....its heavy and slow simply throw a 125cc 2 stroke GAS engine on there and you will have a light weight speed monster
FORDGTFANATIC 3 years ago
Yeah, you are right about the weight, but, electric can be just as fast, this guy just way too much weight on.
ILOVESPEED25 3 years ago
You missed the point, this was a technology testing kart, for possible scaling up into hybrid cars, but thanks for your comment.

Electricity doesnt produce fumes or alot of noise so its good for rural places (hence why allt he stuff i build is electric lol)

Nice work! Now if it were me, I'd dispense with the super caps and put more batteries on it. Speed, man!
Of course, your kart is a whole lot better looking that my "homey-made" frames...
