I feel sick to watch this unbelieavable pile or arrogant cruelty in name of a religion while there is only a human sickness to use superstition rather than making the real efford to achieve virtues and inner qualities and leave alone those poor animals, and kill a cabbage, barbarians!!
@stepbystepMYway , it's in Shulchan Aruch, and many great sages took issue with it. Some learned rabbis considered it a pagan ritual, while others thought it simply unnecessary.
@rrrina Yes, the Shulchan Aruch is a commentary on the Oral Law aka The Talmud and as such cannot be separated. If you look into many of the conversations that took place in that - lots of Rabbis argue over one another but in the end was considered the correct way to go.
@stepbystepMYway , not true. It has remained controversial throughout the centuries, and, in fact, most Jews do NOT use chickens. In fact some (like my orthodox grandfather) do not do the ritual at all ... even with money.
This wouldn't be happening if the cursed "Ari" (talk about "lionizing" lol) hadn't found "mystical significance" in it. Almost nothing that came from his school of "kabbalah" is kosher, and I think theres reason to believe he was sent by the vatican to infiltrate Judaism with all manner of avodah zarah.
why the hell are those people holding those chickens in such a cruel way for? Why are they in such a dreadful conditions. We want to know why are they not getting food and water. Why are they missing feathers?
My hope is that, as we (hopefully) evolve, as a species, these cruel, barbararic, and UNNECESSARY practices will be phased out. If it is possible to do the ritual with money, why should anyone be harming a chicken?
Outrageous that you are comparing chickens to human beings! People that kill animals are like Nazis?! Animals were created to be food for humans. It must be your low self esteem that makes you think you are an equal level as an animal. silly silly silly
Actually, while the Torah says that, during the period of Noah, God made a concession (based on man's lust for flesh) and ALLOWED people to eat meat, it does not say he mandated it. God placed heavy restrictions on slaughter and preparation, as well as on the treatment of animals (none of which is being adhered to). Your arrogant delusions of grandeur, along with your moral bankruptcy, make you think you are superior to animals and that they are here for your use.
We did not eat them in the Garden of Eden. Obviously, animals were NOT originally intended for food. Genesis instructs us to eat vegetation. Due to the flood (which killed all vegetation) it became a neccessary permission to eat the animals, but this was never intended to be a right to exploit, as we do today. We do not own God's creation; why would we be allowed to do whatever we please with it? The truth is, our first commandment was to take care of all creation, the animals included..
Thank you for the information, rrrina. This sad event looks like a carnival, hard to believe that Gods' chosen people can act in such a cruel and inhumane way. This ain't the Old Testament, folks.
I agree. My grandfather, who was an ultra-orthodox Jew and a TRULY righteous man, loved animals. He rescued dogs, cats, and even wounded birds. He also rescued people - giving them free food and shelter. He was admanatly opposed to Kapparot. He said it was not in the Torah or the Talmud, and that if people really wanted to do the ritual, they could do it with money, instead of an animal. Most Jews do not participate in this barbaric practice.
Your grandfather sounds like a kind and benevolent man. His actions show that one does not need to do harm to observe his faith. Maybe only those burdened with sin must absolve themselves through the suffering of animals in public. It sadly seems as if these individuals are trying to provoke controversy with their bloodletting. Bless you and your grandfather, rrrina.
I thought it would be more appropriate if I let Richard Schwartz, PhD, president of Jewish Vegetarians of North America (and an observant Jew) answer your question:
"Of course they are. And since other Jewish scholars disagreed, we have a choice tooday.
We can do kapparot using money and then donating it to charity, thereby not harming any living creatures. Or we can take part in a way that harms chickens and then slaughters them.
Since "God's mercies are over ALL of His creatures," and since "the righteous individual considers the lives of his or her animals" and since Judaism forbids tsa'ar ba'alei chaim, I know what my choice is. How about you?"
If everything is being done according to halacha I couldn't care less how the animal feels. That being said however, shechita is painless. If they are harming the animal it is not kosher to begin with and I trust those supervising this process that all aspects are in accordance with halacha.
Since there are many many authorities that sanction the practice and teach that it is preferable - and those authorities are the ones upon whom I rely - I will continue to do as my ancestors did.
@Nickidewbear , NO animal needs to be used. Compassionate people can use money. In fact, the ritual is not mentioned in the Torah or in the Talmud. In Shulchan Aruch where the practice is first mentioned, which was written in the middle ages, it gives the option of using MONEY instead of an animal.
I have received many messages from people about how horrified and angry they are that this is going on. While I certainly agree, may I remind people that this - and FAR WORSE - occurs to animals in factory farms and slaughterhouses on a daily basis -- to tens of billions of animals per year. If you still eat meat and consume other animal products, you are DIRECTLY responsible for unimaginable suffering
Eating animals is permitted by the Torah and the Talmud.
Now if you wear leather, suede, or otherwise benefit from products that are tested on animals, I don't know how you could show your face in public. Oh wait, you don't. You only like posting videos of others, without their consent. Go girl!! Way to lead a moral cause!!
These barbarians choose to slaughter animals on a public thoroughfare. One does not need their consent to post videos of them committing their pagan ritual. They should practice this filthy ritual in their coven or dungeon instead of proudly displaying their primitive blood feast. The holocaust of the chickens. Never again!
Just as worrying - is allowing children to grow with the mind that this is acceptable treatment of animals !!!! No wonder our wold is in such a CRUEL mess
Hummmmmm whatever this religion with minds like that - I don't want to go there - ever ! Cruel - heartless and uncaring - this is not compassion or love or respect towards living creatures - absolutely SHAMEFUL !
These people act as if they are at some social gathering; It appears that their only concern is to selfishly relieve themselves of guilt and sin. There isn't any sincerity to their actions, just reciting words and swinging chickens. It doesn't even seem religious, they appear selfish and decadent. It is interesting that one woman thinks she is ridiculing or embasrrassing you by taking a video of you. Her display shows that deep down, she is embarrassed..

It doesn't mention it in the written law but that's because it says it in the Oral Law, the Talmud. Each are intertwined and cannot be separated.

Adherents of such superstitions are both dangerous and cruel. They need to be banned and arrested.

HeilligeYid, the ones guilty of making a chilul hashem are the perpetrators of these sadistic, barbaric, and unnecessary acts of cruelty to animals.

the torah also says that making a chilul hashem is one of the worst sins and you cannot do teshuva for it...nice going

Not all orthodox Jews do this. My grandfather was orthodox, and he did not believe in this custom (which is not in the Torah or in the Talmud).
In fact, he rescued MANY dogs, cats, and birds.

Do you consider the Shulchan Oruch, the Arizal among numerous other acharonim who encouraged the practice to be part of the Torah?
