I think that it was a terrible movie and the casting was HORRIBLE! But I don't think it was racist. Everyone -3's Zuko... So being Indian isn't automatically bad. I think that the main problem is that they should have stuck with the general image of what race they resemble in the series.

Avatar is based on East Asian and Inuit culture, not specifically Indian South Asian culture. The person to play an Asian character is an Asian actor. Why? Persons belonging to this group that have been systematically marginalized in society, should have opportunities targeted to them to allow for the development of their full potential which would be restricted by said marginalization. These special efforts not because they're Asian,per se, but because being nonwhite has meant something in the US, and still means something, in terms of one's access to full and equal opportunity.

The only white people in the main cast are Katara and Sokka. Literally everyone else (Aang, Iroh, Princess Yue, Zuko, Toph etc.) are all Asian. M. Night Shyamalan spent a lot of time trying to pick the best actors for the parts, and two of them happened to be white. He even seriously considered an asian Katara and Sokka for a long time, but decided Jason and Nicola were just better for the parts.

The only thing that's different about this movie is the color of the actor's skin. The sets, choreography, lore, and costume design are VERY much like the show. Anyone who boycotts the movie logically boycott the show because most of the voice actors are not Asians.

If a movie that makes as many racial gaffes as this has made it all the way through years of production and development, then Hollywood clearly didn't care about the movie's implications, painfully obvious as they may be. It's a symptom of society's view of people of color and race that such a movie was deemed okay to be released.
This video was also made *before* the movie was released and reviewed, so your point about its failure in critic circles is moot.

Looking at the big picture, 4 out of 5 lead male roles will go to white men. This leaves 1 of 5 roles available to black, asian, native american, middle eastern men. The person to play an Asian character is an Asian actor. Why? Persons belonging to this group that have been systematically marginalized in society, should have opportunities targeted to them to allow for the development of their full potential which would be restricted by said marginalization. The only white people in the main cast are Katara and Sokka. Literally everyone else (Aang, Iroh, Princess Yue, Zuko, Toph etc.) are all Asian. M. Night Shyamalan spent a lot of time trying to pick the best actors for the parts, and two of them happened to be white. He even seriously considered an asian Katara and Sokka for a long time, but decided Jason and Nicola were just better for the parts.
It has nothing to do with Paramount, it has to do with M. Night looking for the best actors.

@KimKimJun yeah but i looked at Racebenders website and they have a drawing of all the characters with much more Asian characteristics, so i assumed that that's the way that they wanted the characters to look in the movie, so I'm sorry if that isn't what they were trying to say but that's the message i got, and how is stating the lack of diversity in a movie sad, isn't that what Racebenders are doing too?

@BigBis1337 Those drawing were drawn by the creators. Go look in the artbook you will see Asian characteristics. Asia is already diverse in it self. The show does not need diversity.There are many different ethincities and cultures in Asia, 60+ different cultures in China alone. The show did a very good job at displaying many different aspects of Asia that many veiwers didn't know including me. You are saying if all Asians were cast, there will be no diversity...that is sad.

@KimKimJun there would be diversity but still not as much diversity as how the film looks now. asia is only one part of the world. and in the show whilst it did show diversity in the drawings it doesnt actually state which ethnicity each nation is. zuko never said for example "im the chinese fire nation prince. the show is based on ethnicites and culture from "our" world but in the show the only cultures and nationalities that exist are water, earth, fire and air.

@KimKimJun and yet the creators helped shyamalan make this movie. approving the casting among other things. i see the cultural differences between each nation but in the world of cartoon and tv. yeah they actually have to state their nationality. which they did in the cartoon, zuko stated he was the fire nation prince many times. the show is heavily based on east asian culture. oh for people like me can you please state why the war happened? ill help you out and rule out one reason...ethnicity.

@KimKimJun ok you clearly didnt understand what i was trying to say. the war happened because it was a bending war. sozin, azulon and ozai and many of their nation believed that fire bending was the best. and yeah sozin wanted to rule to world. my point being that within the show it didnt matter what the facial features of a character looked like. if they were from whatever nation then they supported that nation. one way the show this is by type of clothing.

Originally no nation was better than the other(before Sozin) In other words everybody look the same and they were Asian Period. How do you think the GAag was able to hide out in the Fire Nation? @KimKimJun no that makes a lot of sense.......and we will have to see how m.night deals with that come the 3rd movie. the point im trying to make is why is it racist? yeah i know cos he cast whites and indians in a non white and indian "world" but in the film he's cast people from all over the world. and hopefully if the 2nd film (earth) and 3rd film (fire), are made we will see more diversity. the only continent that hasnt been assigned to a nation yet in this movie is south america.

@eddh141 The classification of multitude of groups under the single rubric Asian carries some potential dangers. Asia is NOT a monolith. Asian are culturally and experientially diverse: cultural values and beliefs, religion, primary language, personality syndromes, ethnic identity and etc.
Some Asian countries include: China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Tibet, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Vietnam, and many many others. Diversity can exist without white people; diversity is not a white stamp.

White people are not raceless.Your defense is part of a white pattern. When you look at the large-scale data, patterns of racial preference are made evident: white people are heroes, nonwhite people are inconsequential. White people are constantly denying positive nonwhite role models. Tokenism isn't diversity.

@darlamaria10 put it this way, if there was 2 people of the same ethnicity auditioning for the same role lets say their ethnicity is white. the director clearly sees one of the actors is better than the other so he hires the better one. would you say that is racist? now change the ethnicities of the actors and lets give the director an ethnicity too. so the actors are asian and white the director is asian too he picks the asian because hes better. is it racist? no he may actually be better?

@darlamaria10 another thing is you and many others are looking at this film by itself when you should be looking at the as a trilogy. the NWT was casted as caucasians. this is the first film so of course theres gonna be more caucasians in the film. what about earth, and fire tho? earth is cast as east asian and toph jet, bumi, etc have yet to be cast. and the fire nation has azula, mai, ty lee, jeong jeong still yet to be cast. directors will always cast the better actor whatever they look like.

The only thing that's different about this movie is the color of the actor's skin. The sets, choreography, lore, and costume design are VERY much like the show. Anyone who boycotts the movie logically boycott the show because most of the voice actors are not Asians.

Darth Vader is a Caucasian man with Caucasian kids but his voice actor is the African American James Earl Jones. No problems with Star Wars fans is there?? You're saying fans should except whatever whitewashed travesty hollywood spews out, instead of being respectful to the ORIGINAL source material.

You're just deluding yourself into thinking there is no problem. I never said anything about the movie not being like the source material. Unless M Night does a half assed plot twist, than it's merely a retelling of Book 1. You're just putting words in other people's mouths.
