I was slightly offended by some of the comments here, and I feel I needed to face that ugliness head on. Why does the color of one’s skin matter so much? All colors are beautiful in god’s eyes. I was raised to believe that judging others based off of their skin tone was racist.

She was a First and second Alto and first and second Soprano. Lady T could sing any song that any of today’s R&B singers sing. But the same cannot be said about today’s singers. They just don’t have the range. Plus most don’t even write their own music or even play an instrument. They are singing the light that someone else’s soles reflect. I think that’s rather sad.

As far as "acting black," she wasn't just posing; Teena had a black godmother and her favorite music was always r&b. She was a genuine soul singer; if she had wanted to be more popular, she could have "crossed over" to the Top 40, but she always stayed true to her favorite type of music: Soul music.

@zevadav So am I. I only discovered Teena's music by accident, because I didn't have access to r&b radio stations where I live. The only song I knew of hers was "Lovergirl." I ordered a greatest hits album of hers based on "Lovergirl" and I was amazed at the depth of her musical styles (jazz, in particular) and the poetry of her lyrics. Now, my favorite songs of hers are album cuts like "Casanova Brown," "Yes Indeed" and "Out on a Limb." She was so talented; can't believe she's gone.

I never heard it on any other radio station in Los Angeles. Steve gave a lot of support and showed TRUE loyalty to Teena Marie. She was well respected by KJLH and her loyal fans in Los Angeles. I knew about all of Teena's new album because of Stevie. I absolutely love this song and Teena and she is sorely missed. I am so sad. RIP Lady T.
One thing I've loved most about Teena Marie is that she stayed true to her talent, herself and her fans. She continued to make the music that 'put her over' her entire career. I am devastated by the loss of Teena Marie. I grew up listening to her music and thought she was black because her first album didn't have her photo on it BUT no matter, I was hooked! Teena was an extraordinary singer, entertainer, and person and not necessarily in that order. She had a voice that crossed over color and culture. Berry Gordy definitely realized what he had in signing her to a contract. Even until today, as recently as the summer of 2010 seeing her perform she was still electricfying.
When people think R&B, Funk etc, normally they think only black voices are supposed to dominate. Tina told u in her music that true artistic talent's colorless. She was a First and second Alto and first and second Soprano. Lady T could sing any song that any of today’s R&B singers sing. But the same cannot be said about today’s singers. As far as "acting black," she wasn't just posing; Teena had a black godmother and her favorite music was always r&b. She was a genuine soul singer; if she had wanted to be more popular, she could have "crossed over" to the Top 40, but she always stayed true to her favorite type of music: Soul music.

@zevadav So am I. I only discovered Teena's music by accident, because I didn't have access to r&b radio stations where I live. The only song I knew of hers was "Lovergirl." I ordered a greatest hits album of hers based on "Lovergirl" and I was amazed at the depth of her musical styles (jazz, in particular) and the poetry of her lyrics. Now, my favorite songs of hers are album cuts like "Casanova Brown," "Yes Indeed" and "Out on a Limb." She was so talented; can't believe she's gone.

I never heard it on any other radio station in Los Angeles. Steve gave a lot of support and showed TRUE loyalty to Teena Marie. She was well respected by KJLH and her loyal fans in Los Angeles. One thing I've loved most about Teena Marie is that she stayed true to her talent, herself and her fans. She continued to make the music that 'put her over' her entire career. Teena was an extraordinary singer, entertainer, and person and not necessarily in that order. She had a voice that crossed over color and culture. Berry Gordy definitely realized what he had in signing her to a contract. Even until today, as recently as the summer of 2010 seeing her perform she was still electricfying.

@livingdollshoppe We could go on and on with this one however for me the proof is in the music. You telling me that Beyonce is a powerhouse, amazing, great etc isn't going to change my mind. I admit that I may have been a bit harsh in describing her as mediocre but vocally she doesn't move me. And that's how you can compare the two. Vocally Teena was more soulful. I've just listened to Congo Square; every single track is pure quality R&B. Further proof of the great talent we've lost.

I'm hurting so bad for this lost she never got what she deserved, this lady can sing. She is my favorite female singer. I saw her on Mother's day at MSG and she was on fire. RIP Lady La Dona you were one of the best to ever sing. I never cared what color you were your voice touched my heart and tha' all that matters.
