I used to have a car just like this one. You do burnouts to heat up the tires so they stick better and you can launch harder. If your tires shred, you aren't running decent tires. I was running an auto trans with a trans brake so I could get the rpms up and load the stall converter. The problem is spinning them, not shredding them.
@keithskye well then in that case maybe his launch looked slow to you because not everyone is a pro like you...I just figured since this car has over 450 horses you couldn't really stomp on the gas without just sitting there spinning your tires.
I'm not a pro - just race for fun! And all I said the first time was that he didn't have his revs up where they should be for the launch. This video doesn't show whether or not he'd warmed up the tires, but it does't look like it. And I never just "stomp on the gas" 'cause yes, all you'll end up doing is spinning your tires and going nowhere...
@keithskye Car is sitting on street tires and also running a Richmond 5 speed manual box. I think I held on about 1700rpm on launch, any more and it does a total brake loose and I go nowhere. Would help if I was running a 308 or greater diff rather than the 273.
I did run a 373 diff for a while but the car revved out close to 100mph. Was fun but do too much road driving so was impractical.
wtf was wifey driving or what,kicker in the gutz next time!!!!!!!

Nice, but why didn't he get the RPM up before launching? Very slow launch.

@keithskye
if you get the RPMs up before taking off with a 1970 454 all youll do is shred your tires.

KMCarroll89 has said it all - an auto trans etc sorts lots of issues out.
However - I like the manual setup. 5 speed and a big block is fun, I shift from 3rd to 4th @6000rpm at just over 100mph
