well the AMC Alliance GTA was simply the Renault 9, and was considered a really low quality car in Europe. The Encore / Renault 11 was built better. The problem of that car is because engine weren't designed for american roads.
@MaurizioM89 I must disagree with you. Renault 9 and 11 were very good model and it was very widespread here in France. Plus the Renault 9 and 11 share the same platform (chassis).
@rugbytlse here in Italy the reanult 9 wasn't considered a really good car, rusted easly and had quite lots of problem, things that the 11 didn't have. Probably the 9 was even considered worse cause Fiat made his sedan, the Duna, that wasn't better at all, but you know, marketing power is everywhere. Anyway i'm not against Renault, i still drive a 97 Clio and i love it!
I had a all white one. it was vary vary reliable and fast for 95hp, the only thing was with the motor mounts,Renault.bump the Eng,to 2.0 L THE mounts, could not Handel the torque. i wish renault sold cars agen over here. I'm a Honda fin, but i would buy a ren, if they sold over here, they are selling wale overseas.
@jakesaintsrow123 Yes. I was 20yrs old, I bought it right off the showroom floor, the color was Olympic white, Price ,10,895,00. Originally i was going to buy the Acura integra, that was 9,995,00 new! at the same dealer. But the GTA, caught my eye,
That's Very COOL...I Love 80's cars..I Just got my License haha..I drive a 1985 Buick skylark in Tip top shape...I Loved the Renault encore,Alliance,GTA ..Do you still have the GTA?? If Not what Did you get After that?
@jakesaintsrow123 WOW! i wish i did kept it, i gave it back to GMAC finance after owning it for two years, then i got a 1980 cutlass, then a 81 cutlass, then a 82 cutlass, then a 79 cutlass, all gone now, i had a 86 Mazda 626, 91 honda accord ex, two honda cr v's and right now one honda crv 02, and a 09 v6 accord,
@jakesaintsrow123 i know the cutlass ride was so smooth, the 82 was a brougham v8 sun roof, fully loaded, but my x got it when we split up in 93,and the 626 was so good the power Tran out last the body, it rotted out( strut towers) after owning it for 7yrs,loved that Car 5speed manual trans sun roof, automatic air-vents, i gave it to my brother.
Good looking car, To bad AMC got saddled with a car from the dark days of poor Renault engineering. Engine cooling and oil leaks were a huge problem.I think AMC said they made over sixty changes to the cooling system and still had problems making it work right.
AMC used engines and gearboxes that were pre assembled in France and shipped to the usa. The design of the closed cooling system was not up to American driving. Long hours of high rpms at high temps. Americans also do not check fluids. When air was sucked into the cooling system from low coolant it would cause the head gaskets to blow.
@ducatinova I had a friend who had a Premier that had air in the cooling system and the car was overheating, but his mechanic was good and caught the problem. He described the same thing you just did
The GTA had a 95hp 2.0L engine giving it pretty good performance. But, like most Alliances, build quality was terrible. AMC/Renault should have brought this vehicle out a little sooner as by 1987, it was too little, too late.
The GTA was a nice car but by the time it reached the market for the 87 model year Alliance sales had all but come to a halt. The Alliance like the Dauphine before it got a reputation really quick for falling apart. If these had been dependable Renault might still be in the US market. I hope a similiar fate does not happen with the Fiat/Chrysler linkup.
It was everything except european car, it was build in the US ans this model did not exist i France, steel was thicker and building quality was far better than the french model!!If you buy one and import it in France it's gonna be like hell to get it right, you must change front rear lamps, window etc..
This was a good car, and no it wasn,t really a European car but a Renault built in North America by AMC/Jeep for the US and Canadian market under licence of the original French Renault factory.
Is that Rod Blagojevich flashing on the screen at 0:56? So now we know where he learned his skills at being a crook by trying to peddle Renaults for AMC!

what about the fact that it has the wheelbase longer on one side than the other. Now that is french engineering.

This is a pretty sweet looking car. AMC should have used their own engines though, Renault engineering sucked back then.

@ducatinova The reason why they had problems was because they couldn't build them properly. In Europe we never had those major problems with them.

No you didn't. None came with a 0.7l engine and I doubt any car did.

1.2l was the smallest, and that ws only in europe!!

Why change the front and rear lights?
wtonckens 2 years ago
this is using sealed beam headlamps which were required by law for years in the Us. I think european tail light colors are different too.

BTW 15" wheels would have been HUGE in the 1980's on a compact car.
