Graphics are ever improving but they are still have a long way to go The biggest thing that ruins the realism in todays graphics is the way objects interact with the environment, the tacky 2d follage, and the jerky, repetitive, awkward character animation. I'd say we might start seeing realism not next generation, but the one after.

Shadows in real life aren't that exaggerated. Its too bright when you look into the distance from under the trees. The grass is a little dull compared to real life. Brightness is highly exaggerated as well. Games still have a long way to go before reaching the ultimate graphics. This video shows people what they like to see in video games. i.e. bloom, spec maps, hard shadows, high contrast, post processing, and filtering effects. Don't get me wrong Crysis' graphics are still incomparable.
