It could have been just as "euro" and quite a bit more realistic. For example, why not have Richelieu as one of the main players? Why not have players buying control of armies each turn? Why not have King Christian or King Gustav as card-driven entries the players can randomly introduce into play?
Simple doesn't need to be absurd. A bit more historical research would have made this into a much better game, without the barely playable complexity of the CDG game (as you aptly demonstrated).
This is the sort of game where you try to come up with more realistic house rules, maybe come up with your own custom components if you're bored enough, then finally give up in frustration.
Historically this game is a jumble. But it has a cube tower! :D One thing I'll say is that the peasants in this game are not happy.

I have the same problem with "Napoleon at Chattanooga" style games too. Unfortunate, as the Thirty Years War period is one I'm interested in.

@DrCruel - with this, you just gotta accept it's just a euro.
I'm fairly impressed with the CDG on the subject (covered earlier)

@DrCruel - yes, it could still be euro, but it couldn't be this simple a design.
Richelieu aside, the other changes would change the mechanics, and that
is what is important to these people.

@calandale I guess you're right.

Ya well.
