Aviodrome musuem in Holland has purchased 3 (yes three) of these in one buy from someone in the states about two years ago. They are planning to put one back in the air in the future. Restoration has not began yet though.
Of course, there's no chance of buying a modern version of this aircraft. This 1930's info-mercial sold me on the plane! The plane may have been ugly back then... Were such a plane still in production, there would probably have been style-design evolving that would likely have included some attention to visual appearance.
@railadvocate Not really...there is only so much "style development" one can do with aerodynamics. Nice though though and remember "Just because it's ugly doesn't mean it wont out fly EVERYTHING ELSE" 8^)
Ya gotta give the guys props (no pun intended) for trying to make a nation with an airplane in every garage. They should have just added one little thing to make all the difference...an emblem on the front - a letters V W enclosed in a circle (Volkswagen) - and it would have sold like hot cakes!
Take away the cabin superstructure, and one can see a clear resemblance to an embryonic tail-boom design of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning. You manage to successfully dig up footage of the weirdest-looking, but nonetheless fascinating, early + more recent airframe prototypes etc. It's always a treat to log on to your site, Bomberguy. Thank you.
Really neat "people's plane." I remember seeing a clip of them letting a kid fly this plan who hadn't flown before. The instructor didn't help him fly it. The landing gear has suspension to make the landings easier.
I think the Ercoupe won that competion. Spin and stall proof. Ive flown them and thats not exactly true. You can force it into a spin and it will stall also.
Tri pod landing gear - high mounted pusher prop - all good ideas popular today. I suspect the engine weight up high above wing gives it a wobbly feel at low speed ...THANK You BomberGuy ! I have never seen this plane.
From looking carefully at the video and stills, I suspect the engine was mounted lower than it first appears. The prop, and therefore the thrust line, was high. I'm not sure what effect that might have had, though.
I wonder what a retractable gear version of this with a modern engine would be like?
The engine is heavy -- prob belt drive? Sounds like a tractor motor [ or my old Volvo ! ] Way poor stability compared to a modern Cessna 172 I suppose. The design is fascinating, but the cabin is small. Re-born with light weight materials, spindly retractable gear, put in power and wow, a cool airplane. Hiller Museum has a treasure, would love to see the engine configuration, prob simple [ and hot & noisy ]. Bomberguy: any reference to drawings? Schematics? Thanks!
Just heard that the French government have watched this video and are going to surrender... just in case.

Take off from the old Bolling Field in DC
you can see the Capitol in one frame and the Library of Congress in another.

@Bomberguy Dear mr. Bomberguy, the tails and controlsurfaces of that oddly shaped airtaxi remind me of the P-38 Lightning.
Were any P-38 Lightning parts used in the making of this plane?
41point2 is right, you have some nice vintage footage here!
