  • oh i remember this is the first video i`ve watched back then as i`ve first watched mike johnston , and from that time i started to watch all of his Lessons and `ve learned a lot from him ^^

  • I remember watching this video back in 07!

Its awesome how far you've come thanks to youtube.

  • @ladylane007 did you find out?

  • @EndTimeMusic I would like to know too :-)

  • thats incredible, im lost for words how he does that!!! i need to know how to do that!

  • How are you executing those 32nd bass notes? Maybe a little instruction and a bitty camera on your bass foot would help us.

  • @chefjimmie1 Try sliding your foot up the bass pedal. I'm not saying that's how he does it, that's how i do it.

  • Wait, how does this help our speed? He didn't really show how to do it, we could only hear it.

  • do you use either heel toe or slide?

  • are you using double pedals??

  • @MrBettsBoy

    yes

  • @MrBettsBoy Nope. He's a single pedal player.

  • @DuNordavind alright, thanks. I thought he did

  • *Up to @2:16 wow this is nothing

@2:20 my ankle hurts ah !

  • triplets 1 foot = HELL YEAAAH!!!

  • He's very talented indeed. Congratulations to you mate, you've impressed me (:

btw, I know a guy who does triplets with single pedle at quite fast tempo allowing him to do some insane sounding beats, I can imagine that it'd be awesome do be able do those things, but I'm to lazy to learn those single-foot technics.

    Once again, nice playing :)

  • @#%)@(*#$&)@!$)@#(WT)$(T)A#(

hopefully that got your attention , soo i heard practicing rudiments with your feet can help increase your bass speed dramatically ?

but i was wondering , do you have to use a pedal ? or can you be sitting at your desk tapping rudiments on the floor ? cuz i dont wanna be using my bass drum in the middle of the night , or having to move my pedals back and forth from a pad to the bass .

    someone please reply ..

  • @nathantdwp777 You better always try to stay on your drums and "tools" as long as you can, response, dynamic, fulcro and stuff like this is always going to be different away from your baby :) soo, always try to practice on "her", anyway you can warm up your muscles and keep on practicing without the pedal, if you're forced to, I understand your issue, is a common one :P tapping on the floor is not the best way, but is a way, just try non to hurt your self! Have a good one, God bless you.

  • @nathantdwp777 Well, tapping your foot on the floor is a lot easier than using a pedal. You could try it but I wouldn't give it much weight.

  • What's with all the double bass abuse? Clearly it gets better results if you're playing metal music because you can only really play 2 notes in a row that fast using single pedal. It's good to be able to go fast with one foot but if the music needs it then using a double pedal isn't 'cheating'. I'd like to see someone do a decent slipknot cover with one foot.

  • @wedgehead100 dont bring slipknot into this..cmon man

  • @420jaymac I don't even like Slipknot, but the point is that a good drummer should be versatile and so they should be capable of playing heavy metal well, which can't be done with a single bass pedal.

  • @wedgehead100 thats quite untrue to say heavy metal cant be played with a single bass pedal

  • @420jaymac Can you give an example? Some music certainly requires double bass - that's all I'm saying. I just don't think that using double bass pedal can be called cheating...

  • @wedgehead100 here is derek roddy showing some examples of a traditional blast beat: youtube dot com /watch?v=18oaIznHoOI note: he only uses single pedal in video

  • hes not using double bass, hes eather using heel toe or the slide for single pedal.

  • mIKE gREAT LESSON you clear care about DRUMMERS so do I so can I ask you to SHARE THE LINKS TO MY DRUMMER HEALTH SPECIFIC VIDEO that deals with the 3rd biggest killer and the numbe rONE INCAPACITATOR IN THE WEST my 2 part film is called "DRUMBEATSTROKE" the information it has been checked by Health Professionals to be accurate.

ALL I ASK YOU TO PLS SPREAD IT TO ALL YOUR DRUM CONTACTS AND ASK THEM TO DO THE SAME. I was Paralysed at 38yrs old I play with just ONE HAND& ONE FOOT

  • Mike just keep doing what you do man! Thanks for the patience and the wisdom to give God Bless!

  • hey mite be a stupid question but how exactly did you do the last bit sounding like a drag with the bass

  • your doubles on the kick are ridiculous mike..keep up the good work!

  • you can obviously see, that he isn't using a double bass pedal, because his left foot bounces the same way when he isn't playing fast double strokes as when he is. I can see how you would think that.

  • It almost sounds impossible with some of those speeds...

  • for real mean, you're super awesome! I wish so badly i was at your level, so i guess i gotta practice more. Come to Seattle please!!!!

  • yeah...he play with two beaters...respect only for bonham foot!

  • Hey Mike, I just bought a drum set for church, and I am a beginner. I was wondering any drummers I should look up(besides you, of course.) that can be good role models? =)

  • .............................godddddddddddd

  • holy... im not sure thats even humanely possible

  • @beatcrew: He is using a single pedal and has been playing for several years and I find it insulting to him that you would think he is using a double pedal.

  • That last one is just crazy! :D

  • whoa amazing speed man thats sick very niice drumset i wish i had it

  • hey my name is the same as yours

  • Another reason Mike is good is because he dosn't cheat using a double kick. I use just a reg kick and I do just as well

  • love your kit!!!

  • by the way i love the kick sound is it triggered?

  • you should record another video showing your foot while you play

  • how did you do that double bass????

  • Ok i know some of u might think hes playing double bass but he isnt, u can tell cause of if the other foot was on the hi hat it would be lifting us his right foot doesnt move enough for the spped of the bass pedal to move with the apeed of his leg.

  • Hey Mike, this is AWESOME!!! Question: are you using a double-bass pedal?

  • lol had to oil the chain on my foot pad. was getting creaking in 16th notes

  • If your playing single foot, are you using the slide technique?

  • Mike is the best. I love you <3

    haha :D

  • mmmm thats hard!

  • i have alot of respact for you and have got a few of my mates to watch your stuff :)

  • is that double bass ? or a crazy technique I don't know about

  • Quick question, was that with one or two pedals?

  • Does anyone know the song at the beginning of this video? You're such a talented drummer!!!

  • @GreenDayLetterbomb72 did you find out??

  • @ulusot Nah

  • Does anyone know the song that's playing at the end of the video? & you're an awesome drummer!! :D super talented.

  • i wud luv to meet you in person, i hve learned so much with ur lesson from the internet, thankyou very much, 0792231142 Sipho

  • drumset sounds so nice ._.

  • i'd marry that kit lol j/k. great vid. hope to see more

  • are you using a double pedal or not, it seriously looks like you are

  • are you serious???? fuck I didn't think it was possible to imitate double bass with 1 pedal... AWESOME

  • Haha its funny when you watch mike's newer videos where he has clearly proven he uses a single pedal and then come back to an older one such as this, where people think he uses a double - if he was using a double kick his hi hat would be open not closed! Once again great video Mike :)

  • nah he is not using double bass pedal.. just bouncing. i know because i have 7 year old active drum life..and i know how to do this technique and how to use it....

  • You sir, are a god

  • that little shuffle beat at 2:02 was tight, the rest afterwards is all kind of hard to get at if i'm not wearing shoes or if i'm playing with a really shitty pedal with little rebound. and like others said, mike DOESN'T use double pedals, at least in this and in most exercises as far as i am aware.

  • if i was to guess, he is keeping time on his left by tapping his heel, but he is using his toe on the pedal, the only reason i say this, is i have been asked if i was playing single bass, and keeping time on the hat for the same reason, my left leg bounces away on the heel, its just like a natural thing

  • great tips, thanks!

  • Dude, i would marry it.

  • Dude you are such a beast i pray to God to be half as good as you are someday!!!!

  • this is single pedal huh ? this is mad :P if its double pedal please tell :P

  • Y that defintly helped me! He showed us how fast he is and that defintly helped me ALOT!

  • wait he doesnt use a double bass, it looks like it with his right foot, he hits once and it looks double but i dont know

  • what i do is alternate from sole of the foot to the ball of the foot

so basically my foot is rocking, but i cant play it as fast as he can xD

i still got work to do

  • dude is he just using 1 kick. he has mad skill and that is a mega sexy drum set

  • that was sick man!! nice!!

  • i dont wanna say he is but he is using double kick. theres a big difference between keeping time with ur foot and doing what hes doing. his foot only moves slightly when hes not using the kick, but when he gets into the faster stuff his foot is moving exactly as if he is using doubles, and it sounds like a double kick as well. fair obvious guys

  • hey does he have his foot flat or heel off the ground?

  • I like this guy too. simple technique, But the trick is to maintain the momentum of your pedal so you can apply beyond only doubles. Check out Jojo.

  • this makes me feel horrible i suck, its like a double bass withut a double bass fuck me!

  • How can i get a free drum like yours.

  • wow. i'm amazed because either i've never seen something so awesome or something so horrific. its madness how good this guy is.

  • It's a simple technique really.....he's not using double bass here.

  • If only more videos were like this, soooo sooo helpful nice and chatty no nonsense and goes completely against the norm of vidoes where its just to showboat, only thing know is to do a clinic in the uk soo you can sign the linear book im going to buy soon ha.

  • right foot = doing all the bass drum notes.

left foot = uses only for counting.

therefore: Mr. Mike here is just doing all the bass drum stuff by his right foot alone. (it's kinda slide technique or something) xD!

  • Love that excercise!!!

  • hmm...nevermind...it's a single pedal. my bad. it can be done by hitting your heel then the ball of your foot following through. Like a Tim Waterson single pedal version.

  • Im pretty convinced it's a double pedal...notice the height of his left and right legs getting shorter as he increases speed. He is also keeping time with his right leg. just a guess though.

  • Guys check out my vidoe response on my Youtube page. Just showing once and for all Mike is using a SINGLE pedal!

    Thanks!

  • increible

  • you can plainly see that he's playing all the bass notes with his right foot, and keeping time by lightly tapping his hat pedal

  • The dude is absolutely performing these exercises on a single pedal. It's not terribly difficult to see that and it's not terribly difficult to actually perform the exercises either. Great warm up though.

  • he's good.. honestly he doesnt use a double peds..have met people with this kind of playing..either jazzer or metal.anyways KUDOS!

  • he doesn't use double pedals because he doesn't need them. His foot-speed is phenomenal.

  • Dude he's an Alien. why would he need a double bass?

  • wow

  • i agree. too many drummers today use double bass and they consider themselves 'talented' ...most even use a trigger. you might learn something from guys like mike...he actually has some real talent! i myself refuse to use double bass...its cheap. the right pedal helps too...i tried out a cobra and was playin doubles and triples it pretty damn fast

  • wow

  • wow keep kicking Mike. Fun from Philippines

  • mad mAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDDDD respect for YOU mike johnston greatest drum teacher EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH ima go scream at someone.

  • lol

  • he keeps time with his left foot, he doens't use double bass

  • hes not useing a double pedal mikes a realy good drumer man

  • ".. and yes, we will be spending a lot of time together .. won't we." lmfaoo !

  • dude ur a total beast how did u get endorsed]

  • umm... because he's a "total beast." that's how

  • cause hes a total beast...

  • for all u sillys that think hes using double bass, look at his left foot. just watch it. the whole way through. it never leaves the hi hat pedal. its the bouncing white thing below his ass. this man is a master. 6/5

  • why would he have to use a double pedal? most real drummers especially those that are endorsed can do what eva they want with a bass pedal there is no need for a double pedal unless they wanna do somethin for heavy metal music

  • your right dude, his left foot was keeping time but when it goes to 32nd and 64th his left foot changed, you can see his white sneaker. plus he's playing the high hat so his foot is just there to keep time off the pedal but when he needs it he switches over

  • @embalyst he was keeping time with his left foot....lol

  • @embalyst his left is pulsing time on the hi hat pedal he's not using double pedal

  • @embalyst how would u explain da extremely tight hi hat then?

  • let me revise my last statement..i meant he is NOT using a double bass, his left is pulsing time on the hi hat pedal

  • everyone shut the fuck up he's just bouncing, its a really easy technique, learn it and stop saying this guy is using a double bass pedal. I really have respect for this guy because he doesnt use one. it seems that all drumming today consists of two beaters. im sick of it

  • thank you! the double bass drum is the anti-christ!

  • i second that

  • @TheGurgleBurgers whats wrong with 2 beaters? When they are used correctly its a beautiful thing.

  • Definitely a single bass technique here. For those of you freaked out by the sixty fourth note part just slow the overall beat down a bit untill your foot starts to get comfortable with the faster pulses. You can of course leave them out at first but your foot will get it eventually kick in to that same hight gear.

  • @xScareBearsx he's def. not, seen him live

  • He looks so much more happy in the new videos...I think he's where he wants to be at in life.

Good for you Mike, you deserve it!

  • THIS GUY IS SICK .

    i was like . sh*t . no way .

but yeah . i tried the first time .

    and hey . it's plausible . ;) practice emakes excellence .

  • i wud marry it!

my girl friend can go screw herself that is a sexy kit!

  • he's using a double bass you idiot

  • those 64ths are insane

  • strong foot!^^ nice!

  • ayo i was struggling to get this using one padel not knowiung that u were using two. it helped me though. i can do some of the things u did bu not the really fast one at the end

  • I'm getting the hang of this, really great video man, thanks a bunch.

  • are u using double bass?

  • just had a lesson with today with him. he doesnt need double bass nor does he like it or use it that much

  • trying to get linkin park - In the end down......jeez straight 16th notes on the bass drum are HARD!

  • yeah,, he's using double bass peds

  • just look at the (more info) thing... and look at the tags.. it even says double bass

  • no double pedal. but gotta be some heel toe in there. thats the way to go

  • he's syncing his left foot with his right hand, gtfo noobs

  • eyyy man that's double pedal, l thought improve with one foot, whatever...

  • hes not using a double pedal its called heel toe

  • He starts using double bass at about 2:01

Whats with everyone hating double bass? I don't get it.

  • omg, not even drummers with double bass pedals play that fast as on 2:45 :D You're wicked man! :D

  • the video said "bass drum speed" not "double bass drum speed" all one foot.

  • it looks like hes using a double pedal

  • yes he is.

  • @zackattack94 it says one foot but it looks like his using both..

  • thanks for helping me out mike

  • that's all do-able with one foot man!

  • great stuff

  • that sounds like a double bass, thats pretty damn fast for one foot!

  • i need to learn this cos this is the thing im strugglin with

  • Heel and Toe and Slide are variations of getting the double kick sound, there are other ways too, just keep practicing doing doubles between your foot and your hand, like kk,ss (kick, kick, snare, snare) if you improve your speed, and get it like doing doubles with you hands, the rudiment, then you can do this, it does not matter if you do heel, slide or whatever, you can create you own, by adapting to what fits you best.

  • He's not. He keeps time w/ his left leg... watch some of his other vids, you'll see.

  • erm if it's so easy why don't you give it a try? o.0

  • .... um noooo his left foot is pulsing eighth notes on the hi hat......

  • hey, men, you are totally wrong, he uses the slide technique...

  • u does the slide technique thing lol "idk what its called realy" while keeping time with his left foot

  • hes using his left foot to hold the beat. lots of drummers do that, he aint using a double pedal.

  • he's not using two pedals, he's counting with the left leg. You can tell this when he is playing only the hi-hat and snare and the left leg is still going but with out sound.

  • i REALLY need to learn that!

Got to get thosse 32 second notes!

    AMAZING

  • is the slide technique the same as the heel toe? or whats the difference

  • the slide technique doesn't contain your heel. slide technique: kick with your toes on the plate near the heel plate, then quickly slide forward and catch the moving pedal to commit another kick. heel toe: move your toes to the very front of your pedal while keeping your heel up. then let your heel fall and right after that, let your toes kick, still heel down. you only need to adjust the speed to get non-shuffled strokes and stuff, takes a little time

  • i have alota trouble wit my foot speed an also i have alota trouble playin da bass faster than da hi hat an snare.

  • Not bad

  • How does he play the bass triplets at the end?

  • i wonder if he relaxes his foot on the bass pedal, or he raised his heels.

  • How will I be able to manage this?

    ,,,so,,,,damn,,,,fast!

  • Its definitly a double pedal

  • ya, not too hard. heel-toe ftw

  • mike johnston does NOT use double bass drum pedal. He uses a dw 4000 pedal. His favorite pedal is dw 5000 so he uses that sometimes. The reason his left foot is moving, is because he marks time with his left foot. He uses the skip technique which is like the slide technique but second note is accented. hope I cleared everything up.

  • Lmfao

I'm playing drums almost two years and do shit like what Mike Johnston is doing and I didn't even realize it was called a technique (Skip Technique)
