Wow! that hold she holds is haaaard. Considering how many people have done this song she totally owns it here. Very flexible singing voice and powerful on top of that. It would be interesting to hear her do an album of standards.
As a footnote: Harold Arlen, of the tune "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," and lyricist Johnny Mercer, of "Moon River," teamed together to write this and other songs for a musical based on Arna Bontemps' novel, God Sends Sunday. The musical, re-titled St. Louis Woman, opened on March 30, 1946. The renowned Pearl Bailey made her Broadway debut in St. Louis Woman, although she didn't sing "Come Rain or Come Shine" in the musical. Now, for MJB, now sista sang her sweet fine tushy off on that one!
You can tell she's lived and loved. She masters every note and articulates each sentiment perfectly even though she looks like she's about to die delivering it!
Mary J. sang her butt of, like she always does! Mary you'll forever be my all time favorite singer, but I wish you'd stop doing that lifeless so called r'n'b stuff you've been doing lately and go back to that soulful music you used to give us.
Right ONNNNNNN Mary J Blige!!!

The was Bessie, Mahalia, there was Billie, Aretha and Etta and then there was Mary. Sublime.
I mean that last note could have gone ULTRA wrong. Only rare genius could pull that off. Stunning.
