  • alternate picking or down picking. Who gives a fuck. Its up to the individual. Music is music.

  • he is clif burton

  • 1. he doesnt down pick

    2. the whole opening riff is played on the low E string

  • DOWN STROKES YOU COCK SUCKER!!

  • Damn...this video lied to me...on all occasions.

  • i got this dvd on netflix it suck major anus most the stuff he does is wrong and he doesnt even do the whole songs

  • @Gibsonguitar4life hes not wrong, he just play different style of picking.

  • Wow. Zakk in the Jersey days before Ozzy or early Ozzy

    Zepher...

  • Everyone plays their own way, chill the fuck out.

  • ummm....where's the solo exactly?? or did u mean tht he's playin it solo aka by himself?? :s

  • what pickups ????on that guitar???

  • Epic Fail.

  • i'm loving that tone.

  • Everyone plays there own way. If not, everyone would sound the same. And your girlfriends wouldnt complaine, that you cant satisfy them like there old boyfriend did.

Maybe i should make a video on that, so my exes will stop calling me when their new men are at work.

....then you guys can go "thats not where your elbow is supposed to be man"....lol

  • "needs to down pick"? What are you guys, the "pick police" I learned this song over 20 years ago, without tab books, or someone telling me how to pick. Next your goping to tell him is strap is on on too high, or he has to play with certain brand strings, cause metallica uses them.

  • it wrong lol i have the tab book for this and its kinda right hte way he plays it

  • he's using alt picking and where the fuck is the solo

  • Amazing distortion....!!!

  • how can anybody say, that his vid teaching how to play master of puppets is the best one, when Kirk Hammett made his own tutorial vid, which is widely known. I think that he is the right person to know how to play it right.

  • right

  • impressive how he uses a pick AND his left pinky.

  • good tone

  • Ermmm....Change the video title...

And tell that dude to down pick.

  • That's not how its played. I know, I know, same notes but still.

  • he sooooo reminds me of dave mustaine lmaoo, id laugh if it was :P

  • lol you are right, he is dave mustaine :O

    xD

  • how did you get this tone

  • hhaha kosmia omos

  • he's playing the intro wrong...

  • to mouni tis mana s

  • kosmia

  • wtf is this. . .its not even te solo!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @zacpoole solo as in one person one guitar he didnt mean the guitar solo

  • its dave mustaine!

  • lol it's not -.-'

  • lol DAMN YOUUU!:D

  • your playing the intro wrong, metallica plays it higher up the neck on the e string

  • yeah seriously I've never seen anyone play it the right way!

  • I play it like he does in the video...

They are the exact same notes.

  • well down picking may sound heavier but I think it was only James that did that anyway because that's the only way he knows how to pick. (watch him play blackened) Its really not good for your arm muscles unless they already extremely developed. you can also speed it up with alt. picking :)

  • He can definitely alternate pick. You can't pick that fast with only downstrokes.

  • oh you definitly can, but as you can hear hes not

  • wow. your name is metallicagtr, and yet, you dont know that James only uses down strokes.

  • I seem to remember an article where James actually said that he actually does use alternate picking on songs and he knows that people think that he only uses downstrokes. I believe it was in guitar player.

  • sure you can :p

  • That's NOT the way the band play it;;

  • Comment removed

  • if down and alt sounded the same, ppl wudnt put so much effort into downpickin wud they? course they sound different :)

  • He picks wrong.

    He needs to down pick.

And this isn't even the freakin solo...

  • @Gibsonguitar4life doesnt make a freakin difference

  • @lgcmetallica Believe it or not it does. And I posted that comment 10 MONTHS AGO. Why even reply?

  • @Gibsonguitar4life Do better for see...

  • @MrThoLho I posted that comment over a year ago. Nice work you fucking retard.

  • @Gibsonguitar4life Haha, yeah i'm a fuckin' retarded maaan

  • @Gibsonguitar4life

WHY HE NEEDS?? MAYBE HE JUST WANTS TO FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE WITH IT AND USING UPSTROKES??

  • @mazingguitar You have to downpick this entire song for it to sound correct.

  • @KilIEmAll you can make it sound the same if you have good alternate picking skills, you don't HAVE TO play it all downstrokes

  • @BurakFender Wrong, you can't get the same attack when you alternate pick it. Play it right, or don't play it at all

  • @KilIEmAll no, YOU can't get the same attack, i do... say's who?

  • @BurakFender No you cant, people who downpick tend to pick the first 2 strings (E,A) Thus giving it a heavier sound with a palm mute. Using an alternate picking Makes the A sound before the E which results in a higher tone, thus, not so heavy. so, down pick it, dont wimp out.

  • @KilIEmAll I can even downpick G B and high E, that's what James does in the Master of Puppets interlude solo, there's no rule. And there's no "downpickers society", any guitar player can downpick if they feel it's necessary. By the way, you dont pick the A string during the riff in 0:57, nor in any other riff in this song, just E...

  • @BurakFender I mean, down picking the E with the A gives it a heavier register. With an alternate pick you hit the A before the E slightly which results in a higher register. im not talking about individual strings.

  • @KilIEmAll I got that, but the thing is, you don't hit both E and A, you just hit E. There's no palm muted riff in Mater Of Puppets where you hit both E and A. This is also the case in most thrash metal songs, fast palm muted riffs are almost always played on a single string rather than two strings combined. The bottom line is; you only play the E string while palm muting, so you can make it sound the same...

  • @Gibsonguitar4life what do you mean he needs to down pick? almost everything in this video is down picked. if anything he needs to start alternate picking.

  • @alecxg damn right! he only goes down pick all the vid, give him 3 of his "solos" like that and his hand will burn off xD

  • guys is has deference with alternative or down because down IS HEAVY

  • If you are a good guitarist there should be no difference wheter you downpick or not

  • and amen to cresentman!!!!!

  • i think that a true and skill-ful guitarist learns a song first by listening to it the roughly playing along to it then tweeks it to where it sounds just right or so close its hrd to tell the difference and if they get stuck then they should look up the tabs to the parts that r 2 difficult for them 2 understand then they just go from there I mean thats how is started playing and who cares if its not perfect i mean at least they gave it their best and thats all you can ask for really....

  • jesus. DONT ALTERNATE PICK PEOPLE! JAMES IS FAMOUS FOR HIS DOWNSTROKE!

  • HE'S PLAYING IT IN A WRONG WAY!

1st-THAT'S NOT HOW IT'S PLAYED, JUST WATCH KIRK HAMMETT LESSON VIDEO.

2nd-HE'S PLAYING IN ALTERNATE PICKING, AND THAT'S WRONG AS WELL!

  • what a difference? The main thing that notes were correct, the same chord on a guitar can be played several variants, but noobs are obsessed on the tabs and are ready to repeat all errors

  • yah but thats not giving it the same sound its supposed to sound heavy

  • master of puppets can't be played with alternate picking... that's how metallica tried it in the beginning (search for the demo) and they changed it because it sucks!!! This guy has nice sound, however the difference is audible and guess what... it sucks!!!

  • actully the notes arnt correct. and no this can only be down picked to be correct.

  • changing the way you pick it will change the sound, and its hindering him from letting go of the palm mute on the [0 0 7 0 0 6 0 0 5 0 0 4 0 3 0 2 0 1 0] part. you will be easily able to accent the 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 notes.noobs alternate pic it.

  • this guy gets it

  • It doesn't matter whether you downpick only or not. There's no fucking difference, seriously. Alternate picking is much more comfortable etc.

  • I usually only use alternate picking when I have to play a bunch of notes really fast, but really, like you said (typed), it doesn't really make a difference. It just depends on your personal preferences

  • ya there's a huge difference alt picking doesn't sound as heavy as a down pick and alt picking sounds sloppy for heavy picking parts

  • Not if you're good.

  • no if you alt pick the alt pick sounds more fluent but the down pick sounds much more heavy

  • no, there is a differense. it sounds different.

  • i can hear the difference.

  • Sorry but it does make a difference. I know from experience and from previous guitar tutors. You get a much more heavy, crunchy sound from downpicking. When you alternate pick you get a more soft and round tone compared to downpicking. Of course theres ways of getting around it, like putting on so much gain that you wont hear the difference, and it doesn't matter if you alternate pick. The main thing should be that it sounds good, but don't say there's no difference. Cos there's a huge one.

  • Why does it say Zakk Wylde at the top? That is not Zakk playing.

  • a friend of mine is a van halen fan, and he bought this guy's video all about vh, and it was really in-depth and spot on... then he got the Metallica one, and the shit was a joke. no anecdotes about players or equipment, often inaccurate renditions of only the most popular riffs somehow still played perfunctorily... we tossed it in the woods that night.

  • i have the vhs of this, guy shows like best 60 riffs or so from metallica in slomo and normal speed, great vid

  • that is wat u call a guitar riff not a solo

  • this aint no solo ya punk ass little bitch

  • That may be true, but with a name like you have, you're not worthy to speak Marty Friedman's name.

  • People are arguing about if he is playing the right guitar or not. Just listen to the damn tone. He nailed it. Who gives a shit if he is playing on a strat or gibson or esp.

BTW, this guitar obviously has a humbucker. this wouldn't sound the way it does if it had a single coil.

So lets please stop talking about his tone unless you're saying how well it captures the master of puppets sound.

  • Strat + distortion is not the right way.

I'm a fender addict, and I've got 2 tele and a strat, but they're not so good in these kind of genre.

Also because playing a strat with very light string.. hell i don't know but I love my 013, and I don't think it's possibile to play good metal music with the perfect strings for a fender.

  • This sucks totally!...this is the ebst shit ever

  • He has a Really weird picking technique

  • WTF listen the whole song! this is not the solo, just riffs

  • lolvey clean sound

    but alternate picking sucks!

you play metallica? you play downpicking...

  • where is solo ? this only riffs dude :)

  • go zakk!

  • finally someone who knows how to downpick

  • wrong guitar man

  • theres no such thing as a "wrong guitar".theres more or less sutable for sertain genres. and dont forget the amp.

  • sorry but i would have to disagree, first act is a "wrong guitar" , they suck

  • imagine:

dude says:strats are not good for metal.

and if u put SD Blackouts or emg's int the strat?

  • i didn't say strats (some fenders are really good) i said first act (them fuckin wal mart guitars) lol

but what is better than SD blackouts are SD livewire metals (but they discontinued em, i'm lucky enough to have one though)

  • nah i just sayd strat as an example ;)

  • i agree

i love strats but i wouldnt use them for metal at all!

i use them for rock n roll!

  • or blues, but still i want you could get a decent metal sound.

  • yeah u can still get a decent metal sound

just not many ppl use them for it

    but still its possible

  • Most strats are fitted with single coil pickups, which aren't great for metal. Yeah you can put some fat humbuckers in a strat and you'll get some decent metal tones out. But realistically, you could get that with a decent amp and a stock strat. It all depends on how you tweak your amp in correlation to the guitar tone. However, it's always going to be obvious that there are guitars built for metal, and strats and tele's aren't exactly those guitars.

  • This isn't the solo..

Do you even know what part of a song is the solo?

  • @WoWvids1000 solo training retard read the tittle carefully. i guess someone is teaching him the song

  • either way you play it, its still the exact same notes, just on diferent strings. so technically, both ways are correct.

  • In the "Related Videos" on this theres a vid called "Kirk Hammett Shows Riffs From Master Of Puppets" There you can see how to play it RIGHT!

  • u play the beginning wrong

  • no he dosnt

  • yes he does... Metallica dont play it like that

  • its the exact same notes, just cause live metallica play it on the 12 fret of the e string and he plays on the 7th fret of the a string doesnt mean hes playing it wronge the notes are exactly the same

  • well ofcourse they are the same notes, but why the hell not play it like metallica does...

  • you have just lost all respect by everyone for comparing metallica to fail trivium

  • Trivium are awesome, Metallica are awesome(er), but Trivium should leave Metallica's stuff alone and vice versa. They're completely different

  • play it everything whit down strokes, thats the hetfield way ;)

  • super clean

  • are u using jus down strokes on the intro with plamss mute ?

  • 1st riff just downs and 2nd up and downs

  • umm.....nice solo....not

  • and the solo?

  • lol i use to own this video when i was a teenager back in the early 90's

  • all down picking, no cheating :)

  • is this a marshall major.great !!!

  • yes marshalls back then rocked, you need to find a jcm 800 i beleive, hard to find amp and still very expensive.. find an old one and have it refinished and put into a new marshall cab ;) and you'll get this sound.

  • what guitar is that?

  • looks a lot like an ibanez RG of some sort i think but it has no name :S// im puzzled

  • i use to own this video. this guitar he has is a guitar he made himself. completely built and cut from the wood by him.

  • yer its a nice guitar, good tone

  • ntguy73 is correct, and it looks more like a fender strat than an ibanez rg

  • i use to own this video. this guitar he has is a guitar he made himself. completely built and cut from the wood by him.

  • here`s no solo

  • are you dave mustaine?

  • no this is kurt mitchell, he makes a lot guitar learn dvd's of guitar legends

  • i know

    is just joke

    XD

  • haha

  • This is not a good training video...

  • He play it at alternate picking, but the song is in down strokes :)

  • He propably just means like it's his solo-training. Like he's not getting helped by anyone, he's doing it "solo". ;)

  • i prefer doin it on downstrokes mah self but fuck me its hard doin it fast without messing up well i find it hard anyway

...i might go play it now and maybe one day i'll make a video of how my poo cover riffs are haha

nice solid sounding stuff there man

  • not the solo?

  • those are the riffs... not the "solo"...

  • lol nice amp! damn u know how to make us play that O.O well donne

  • lol james and kirk said the intro riff is played from the 12th fret down on the low E string, not on teh a ...

  • You know it's the same thing, right? The only difference is a negligible tone difference, which is personal preference really. Personally, I prefer the tone of lower frets, so I use lower frets on higher strings. I don't get why people obsess over insignificant things like exactly how the band play the same notes.

  • thats not a solo dumbass

  • This is solo?:O This is intro riff :P

  • Damn. but seriosuly.. he got the master of puppets tone

  • And the solo is where?:|

  • omg hes not downpicking!!! that makes the whole thing wrong!!!!!!!! STFU u can play it down picking, this asshole obviously didnt, its still right maybe its not the way that kirk plays it (which besides the first riff being all on the e string, which is the only difference on his version and kirk hammetts) but the notes are all right

  • if it sounds good who gives a shit if its downpicked or not

  • u can play this however you want. down stroke or alternate up and down. the only difference is that Down strokes make it sound heavier. it doesnt make it wrong if he alternates idiot. Ur all amateurs who dont know the difference about it. so all you can stfu.

  • heeey !!!...metallica plays only downstroke!!!

  • yupp, thats correct.

  • ehhm, i don´t wanna be a jackass, but that´s damn wrong tabs, watch when kirk himself plays it, notghing like it..

  • is dave mustaine playing???

  • does he sound like mustaine?

  • It can't be Mustaine, he's not whining enough.

  • also, Mustaine sounds like he's drunk and high at the same time.

  • i prefer kirks video.
