Everyone plays there own way. If not, everyone would sound the same. And your girlfriends wouldnt complaine, that you cant satisfy them like there old boyfriend did.
Maybe i should make a video on that, so my exes will stop calling me when their new men are at work.
....then you guys can go "thats not where your elbow is supposed to be man"....lol
"needs to down pick"? What are you guys, the "pick police" I learned this song over 20 years ago, without tab books, or someone telling me how to pick. Next your goping to tell him is strap is on on too high, or he has to play with certain brand strings, cause metallica uses them.
how can anybody say, that his vid teaching how to play master of puppets is the best one, when Kirk Hammett made his own tutorial vid, which is widely known. I think that he is the right person to know how to play it right.
well down picking may sound heavier but I think it was only James that did that anyway because that's the only way he knows how to pick. (watch him play blackened) Its really not good for your arm muscles unless they already extremely developed. you can also speed it up with alt. picking :)
I seem to remember an article where James actually said that he actually does use alternate picking on songs and he knows that people think that he only uses downstrokes. I believe it was in guitar player.
@BurakFender No you cant, people who downpick tend to pick the first 2 strings (E,A) Thus giving it a heavier sound with a palm mute. Using an alternate picking Makes the A sound before the E which results in a higher tone, thus, not so heavy. so, down pick it, dont wimp out.
@KilIEmAll I can even downpick G B and high E, that's what James does in the Master of Puppets interlude solo, there's no rule. And there's no "downpickers society", any guitar player can downpick if they feel it's necessary. By the way, you dont pick the A string during the riff in 0:57, nor in any other riff in this song, just E...
@BurakFender I mean, down picking the E with the A gives it a heavier register. With an alternate pick you hit the A before the E slightly which results in a higher register. im not talking about individual strings.
@KilIEmAll I got that, but the thing is, you don't hit both E and A, you just hit E. There's no palm muted riff in Mater Of Puppets where you hit both E and A. This is also the case in most thrash metal songs, fast palm muted riffs are almost always played on a single string rather than two strings combined. The bottom line is; you only play the E string while palm muting, so you can make it sound the same...
@Gibsonguitar4life what do you mean he needs to down pick? almost everything in this video is down picked. if anything he needs to start alternate picking.
i think that a true and skill-ful guitarist learns a song first by listening to it the roughly playing along to it then tweeks it to where it sounds just right or so close its hrd to tell the difference and if they get stuck then they should look up the tabs to the parts that r 2 difficult for them 2 understand then they just go from there I mean thats how is started playing and who cares if its not perfect i mean at least they gave it their best and thats all you can ask for really....
what a difference? The main thing that notes were correct, the same chord on a guitar can be played several variants, but noobs are obsessed on the tabs and are ready to repeat all errors
master of puppets can't be played with alternate picking... that's how metallica tried it in the beginning (search for the demo) and they changed it because it sucks!!! This guy has nice sound, however the difference is audible and guess what... it sucks!!!
changing the way you pick it will change the sound, and its hindering him from letting go of the palm mute on the [0 0 7 0 0 6 0 0 5 0 0 4 0 3 0 2 0 1 0] part. you will be easily able to accent the 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 notes.noobs alternate pic it.
I usually only use alternate picking when I have to play a bunch of notes really fast, but really, like you said (typed), it doesn't really make a difference. It just depends on your personal preferences
Sorry but it does make a difference. I know from experience and from previous guitar tutors. You get a much more heavy, crunchy sound from downpicking. When you alternate pick you get a more soft and round tone compared to downpicking. Of course theres ways of getting around it, like putting on so much gain that you wont hear the difference, and it doesn't matter if you alternate pick. The main thing should be that it sounds good, but don't say there's no difference. Cos there's a huge one.
a friend of mine is a van halen fan, and he bought this guy's video all about vh, and it was really in-depth and spot on... then he got the Metallica one, and the shit was a joke. no anecdotes about players or equipment, often inaccurate renditions of only the most popular riffs somehow still played perfunctorily... we tossed it in the woods that night.
People are arguing about if he is playing the right guitar or not. Just listen to the damn tone. He nailed it. Who gives a shit if he is playing on a strat or gibson or esp.
BTW, this guitar obviously has a humbucker. this wouldn't sound the way it does if it had a single coil.
So lets please stop talking about his tone unless you're saying how well it captures the master of puppets sound.
I'm a fender addict, and I've got 2 tele and a strat, but they're not so good in these kind of genre.
Also because playing a strat with very light string.. hell i don't know but I love my 013, and I don't think it's possibile to play good metal music with the perfect strings for a fender.
Most strats are fitted with single coil pickups, which aren't great for metal. Yeah you can put some fat humbuckers in a strat and you'll get some decent metal tones out. But realistically, you could get that with a decent amp and a stock strat. It all depends on how you tweak your amp in correlation to the guitar tone. However, it's always going to be obvious that there are guitars built for metal, and strats and tele's aren't exactly those guitars.
its the exact same notes, just cause live metallica play it on the 12 fret of the e string and he plays on the 7th fret of the a string doesnt mean hes playing it wronge the notes are exactly the same
yes marshalls back then rocked, you need to find a jcm 800 i beleive, hard to find amp and still very expensive.. find an old one and have it refinished and put into a new marshall cab ;) and you'll get this sound.
You know it's the same thing, right? The only difference is a negligible tone difference, which is personal preference really. Personally, I prefer the tone of lower frets, so I use lower frets on higher strings. I don't get why people obsess over insignificant things like exactly how the band play the same notes.

u can play this however you want. down stroke or alternate up and down. the only difference is that Down strokes make it sound heavier. it doesnt make it wrong if he alternates idiot. Ur all amateurs who dont know the difference about it. so all you can stfu.
