It's good to know that all of us that relate to this girl in the song are not alone in our feelings. I've battled depression almost my whole life and some days are just like this. Many of them are, in fact. But I've tasted that life can be colorful and bright, not always dreary and grey, and the fact that such good things exist gives me hope, even when I'm in pain, as I am now. I am SO the "she" in this song. I have battled this "GreySreet" off and on during my life but the last year has been horrible! It's incredibly dark and lonely here! I have 3 beautiful kids 16yr, 15yr, & a 1 year old son ... a new husband of 1 yr who this is crushing. If I could find peace from this anguish for just one day ...to show them the happiness ... a smile. Oh to feel anything except anger again. How do I get out of this? So much to be happy for...yet I see darkness and feel heaviness!

This song really hits home for me. There is this girl I have loved for ten years. I think this song has a lot to do with the murder of Dave's sister by her husband actually, although it makes a great allegory for someone's depression. Anyone notice how everything on Busted Stuff is more than normally angsty? Anyway, this describes depression really well, I've only had brief encounters with it, but the idea of living with that months on end (or even days) is horrifying.

They don't know why you can't just get over it. For me, I had to eliminate a certain bc pill that was making me increasingly depressed and suicidal. It was like I woke up from a 4 year fog. Every version I've heard of this tune --bootlegs, covers, in Concert-- when referring to God the lyric stays true to a non-gendered, unspecific 'IT', " ...& though she swears IT doesn't listen". There is intent in the words elusiveness.The anomalous pronoun was intended to be heard. With hope lost maybe God is depersonalized. Perhaps we are to assume that only an ambiguous 'It" would disappoint & abandon? No doubt there is depth in the truth of Dave's choice in diction.
