Saw Junior in Newport, South Wales about 30 years ago...on the bill with Jimmy Ruffin and Edwin Starr. Jnr was a great performer, rolling over on the stage and blowing away like a mighty hurricane. Good times!
Thank you Soulmod1967 for this great footage. I remember dancing to Jr. Walker and The All Stars at clubs in the Washington, D.C. area. Of course, the clubs had fantastic bands to dance to this great vintage music of today. They just do not have this great music anymore. The youth of today must really enjoy these posts.
Overshadowed by his bigger hits on todays commercial oldie stations that only play by the songs numbers. This song got plenty of airplay when it was released and was a HIT by all standards. Thanks to YouTube for not overshadowing anything.
Fantastic !! a favourite since my first days collecting music in the sixties. still have 3 Jr Walker LP's, one in MONO. Great video. Looking forward to more of the same. Many thanks, Al
listen closely, especially later in the recording you can hear Jr. singing 'Puckle-up' this was something that really got on the producers nerves. so bad, he stopped the session several times to 'correct' Jr. and the two almost got in a fight over it! finally the producer just gave-up and let Jr. be Jr. thank god cause this recording is awesome!
got this story directly from Billy 'stix' Nicks! original drummer of the Rhythm Rockers who became Jr. Walker and the All-Stars!
When i posted the vid I never expected to see the reaction that it´s had with viewers. many thanks to everyone who has left a comment. Junior and the guys in his band deserve nothing less than our continuing support even if they´re gigging on the other sid eof this life now.
i cant sit still when i hear this song! RIP Jr Walker & Willie Woods, i know Billy "Sticks" Nicks is still alive and i think Vic Thomas is still living as well, James Graves (Drummer before Billy) was killed in a car crash in 1967 but he had left the group before that
Let me say this, this is a bad song. It was my favorite by him. It's just the rythmn of the song and the organ lick. Man you just have to understand what this guy is doing on the organ. I know it don't sound like much but to play it right is something else.
When I came home from the war I bought a Hammond organ, joined a band but the brothers got on drugs and that was that. I continued to practice and this is one of my favorites songs I played on the organ. I took my son to see him at blues alley in '89. I was so pissed because the organ player could not play worth a damn. I almost disrupted the show by telling the organ player to get up so I could show him how these songs were supposed to be played, very dissappointed with the organ player.
@bubblejomay are you still playing the Hammond? Needless to say, in the right hands it drove women crazy, me being one of them. After the sax, it was an still is the sexiest instrument there is .
This man was one of the most soulful individuals who ever walked the earth. "Shotgun," Roadrunner" - they hold their own in any company!
Even in death he speaks loud and clear. He says a mouthful around 2:52. That sax sounds grateful to be in his possession.
Four or five guys with very little production or tech gadgetry created such a pulsing, funky, soul-drenched world that was so hip and timeless. Hail, Jr. Walker!!
I miss this sort of music.. where is todays equivalent? Nothing has the same effect on me that Junior, Sam & Dave, Temptations, Isleys etc etc had....They send me to another place.....full of joy....
@iluvnuggets Get an online petition going for those in favor of his induction to sign it, then forward to the Hall of Fame and see if it does any good.
fuck the hall of fame , its run by squares anyway, when they inducted John Peel into the so called hall of fame i could'nt help but think, hang on , the hall of fucking fame should be indicted into John Peel ,, its all bullshit all that crap ,, JR WALKER dont need a seal of approval ,, its hip, we say so , fuck them lot !!!
@spadge321 Amen, Jr. Walker's music speaks louder than the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ever could ! I saw a friend of mine last night at Midaway Tavern. His dad Charlie taught Jr some music lessons when Jr Walker young. He was teaching him some Jazz music. Jr. told him "Man i dont want play no Jazz , I want to play the Blues . I'm gonna be famous one day ! No more lessons but he did come back to Charlie when he was famous driving his brand new Cadi LOL Peace Darryl B former Allstar 1980 -1995
Grew up as a white boy in Washington, D.C. where soul was king. I played clarinet until high school and started playing sax. I discovered Jr. Walker, bought his albums, played them on the little record player daily, along with the Temptations, Sam and Dave Etc. Got into my first band because I could play "How Sweet It Is" perfectly. I stayed with those guys for 14 years and still can play all of his toons like 1967. I loved him then and want to play them for young folks now. That is soul.
It's just really so good to read a comment like yours and know that he was a personal inspiration. Thanks for your words because it probably makes us all feel that we've been touched by his music in many different ways.
