And another thing(assuming Youtube puts my comments in the write spot!), the rocked out music in this scene(where the enemy fleet leader talks of plunging into the heart of the Earth Fleet) are awsome. It reminds of that classic tune(which the name escapes me...) used in the original James Caan Roller Ball movie. The Earth fleet turret guns sound cool, as usual. I loved mimicing that noise when I was a kid(15-17?)back in the early 80's. I still do!

If this were a live movie(Come on-nn original producers!!!), I'd get character actor Lance Legualt of A-Team-fame to play Capt.Gidion(his voice as amazing the LeGualt looks just like Gidion!. By the way...Any body get the in-joke about Capt.SLATE? Previous posters may have mentioned this already, but Slate is obviously a reference to the great old Flintstone cartoon. 'Slate' was Fred's boss...:p to ALSILVERU2-> It was not Robert Stack's voice-over. I'd like to know this info, also.

One big question: Why didn't Sandor share his reflection technology with the Earth Defense Force. For reference, I allude to the last episode of the Quest for Iscandar. You would think after the first very successful test that the such a defense would have been extremely handy against the magna flame gun. Sandor is too tight-lipped about his pet projects.

I remember being about 10 or 11 years old and running home from school to not miss the beginning of the show. I found this on youtube a while back and showed it to my wife. Her comment was basically, "this is a show for boys". She was right. It was the show that every geeky kid in school would watch.

The japanese Toho Studios have started filming a live action version of "The Quest for Iscandar" this year, premier has been set to december 2010. :)

We can only hope that The Comet Empire will follow on later.

Whats so cool about this episode....back in the mid 80s, I use to have every ship that is shown in the video in my Collection of Star Blazer models, and I also had a large collection of Robotech Models as well.

Back then, the models I had only cost me $2.50 to $5.00 each and now those same Models cost more than $50 to over $100 each.

This was my absolute favorite cartoon when I was a kid, I's watch every day, and this two part episode is the best of the entire series. It is cool to see how much this series contibuted to ideas used on Star Trek TNG, and in many other SciFi movies and series.

Love that moment at 1:10 where you see Slate's fleet lit by starlight as they close the distance on the comet empire ships.

It's beautiful, completely logical, and the sort of visual effect magic that's completely absent from modern anime.

Why do all the other ships blow up so easily? and the Argo can take 10 to 20 hits show damage but never blow up?? Great series but have some consistancy. Could some of the Commet Empire ships take some damage and fly away damaged instead of completely blowing up after 1 hit? what are they filed with hydrogen?

i loved this show when i was a kid. ran home to watch it in 1st grade. the explanation given for the argo being so tuff in the series is kinda spiritual. the crew(starforce) and the ship being one entity/fighting force, and the ship being a little bit immortal after being resurrected (japanese battleship yamato sunk in world war 2) desslok called it a ghost ship as it shot up his planet at the end of series 1, at least the zentraedi were trying to capture the SDF1 and not blow it up in robotech

I too ran home from school to watch Star blazers ,and i've never forgot about star blazers .. It was my first taste of sci fi and anime. On xbox live I'm DESLOK only because DESSLOK was taken in the first hour of LIVE being up. I wish cartoon network or some other channel would buy it. It's still the best story of all time.. Just don't buy the 3rd season like I did it will ruin everything you loved about it.

Unfortunately, the 3rd season of Starblazers was translated by a different production company than had handled the 1st and 2nd seasons.

Obviously, the company did a terrible job of researching the characters from the two previous systems (e.g. General Talan becomes "Sgt Masteron").

I watched the first part of the first episode of Season 3, saw that they were treating Venture and Wildstar as if they had never met before; and simply stopped watching.

it's the battleship yamato. it's got an unusually absurd amount of armour (for a spaceship). since it was originally deployed as a ww2 battleship. i'm just guessing here but thats my explanation.

I love Starblazers, but the dubbing and sound for Comet Empire is horrible. The captain of the fleet sounds like Popeye. In general, it sounds like someone set a cassette recorder a couple of feet from a mono speaker and recorded it that way. I really wish they would release a version with the original Japanese language.
