I really like Mohamed Al Maktoum. The only problem with his approach is that even in the oil-soaked country he spends WAY too much. And his latest project - Burj Khalifa - is the proof of that.

@TSR144 Al Maktoum's company, Emirates Group pay no taxes which is a great help in developing business. He manages to make billions without direct access to oil - there's none of it in Dubai Emirate unlike the neighboring Abu Dhabi.
And to think it all came crashing down during the recession, mainly because the expatriate population bailed of this country - well, things aren't that simple when every brick you lay, every landmark building you achieve, is tarnished with the sweat and blood of the poor.
And every commendable position in the economy or the workplace is governed my discrimination to other races, comfortably basing the reason as 'nationalization'.
Yeah - squeeze the living blood out of hard working expatriates, give them filthy salaries, and build high rises and leave them empty and unwanted. Whatever the dream this dude has, he should have found a more sober way of achieving it - go check out the labor force's living conditions and workload - its one freaking nightmare. Yeah - squeeze the living blood out of hard working expatriates, give them filthy salaries, and build high rises and leave them empty and unwanted. Whatever the dream this dude has, he should have found a more sober way of achieving it - go check out the labor force's living conditions and workload - its one freaking nightmare. People dropping dead because of the heat, working their ass off for anywhere between $300 to $600 a month - thats what Dubai is.

@jondow14 They weren't dragged from their countries all the way to Dubai by force. They agreed to the terms of conditions, which are way better than the appalling conditions in their countries, and this is what they get. I'd bang my head against the wall if their salaries were higher back home. :)

Going months on end without salary, I've met scores of laborers who want to go home, but are held back because of their pending payments. And it goes without saying that when the recession struck, people just left - I hope you're aware of the auctioning of 1000s of cars at the airport parking lot.

Oil is no longer it primary source of funding, 13 years ago when i first moved there it was, and dubai was a tiny city, where the trade center was way out in the desert, now its massive and the sprawl is huge, and tourism and commerce is the primary income.

I would love to visit Dubai, but I am not sure about it. I think that he is in such a hurry because he knows that the days of oil money are coming to an end and he is trying to create other businesses there to take the place of oil money.
