They're a natural phenomena that have been occuring for hundreds of years (documented). Even scientists, who congregate in the area every year, have never been able to prove otherwise.
@seandervan It's actually a natural phenomena, scientifically caused by an excessive amount of decomposing organic material that lets off flammable gases, ignited by the sun, and pulled by the moon's gravitational pull. You can look it up :) I do note your winky face, just putting it out thereeee haha. God i'd love to see this.
The number one theory suggests that fermented sediment in the river, things such as decomposing remains and animal waste, release bubbles of self-immolating gas that rise to the surface and combust. That's right, the best explanation science has come up with for the Naga fireballs is essentially that it eats too much meat. Suspiciously absent from this theory is a reason why the phenomenon occurs around the same time every year. Unless the Mekong eats a regimented diet of Activia yogurt, those
@yourmumisAWSUM tsss, if you quote some one at least give them credit in stead of trying to come over as really witty and original.

@YoDaPlaysDoTA yes. Science can't quite explain it, but the most likely theory is fermented cement is shooting up gas bubbles or something, i don't remember.
I have seen them several times during the last years. During the festival there's a lot of firework and signal rockets around but if you see a fireball you know the difference. They appear some meters above the water, go straight upwards with some speed and disappear. There is no smoke and they are absolutely silent. Like huge fireflys. The Mekong is quite narrow at this place and I have not seen any boat in reach or any facility on the bank from where somebody might shot tracer rounds.
I wanna catch one.

@91319 Yeah... That's a basketball sized ball of natural plasma... It could be about as hot as the sun... I wouldn't recommend it.

Logically, if every other explanation fails, there had to be somebody, human or not, behind it.
Then again, it might be a natural phenomena that we haven't thought of.

They aren't fireworks. They're tracer rounds shot into the air by the military.
