Actually, there isn't an extension on her bassoon. Instead, it is a type of bassoon called the "Gentleman's Model", which simply means the long joint and bell come apart differently than a regular bassoon; the long joint is shorter, and the bell is longer than a standard model.
however, I wish we some day achieve with plastic something similarly beautiful... like the clarinets already do (in the greatest orchestras, indeed...)
but of course it's also fascinating (magical) that natural cane is really living material! it really grows after being dead and cut and gouged...
