I just watched that whole thing Ruzziduzzi, it's clear that Obama is telling anecdotes, describing his thoughts and impressions of the racism around him, and in a mostly figurative manner attempting to give the reader some impression of it. And it's crystal clear that that first quote was taken out of context.
