Hank Crawford is the greatest sax player ever. And his best work above all is midnight over memphis. BEAUTIFUL!!!! One dj put it perfectly, he said midnight over memphis is the ULTIMATE jazz piece.
Sharp and flat? This is "flexitone" pitch! The notes are being "bent". Some of the scoops don't quite get up to the pitch. They're not supposed to. Some of the "screamer" notes "squeeze" to the top side of the pitch. The Blues: A joyous music transcending existential pain. It has its own proper intonation which helps to express that transcendence.
only by the tone deaf - I am not saying that this guy can't play. I just find his pitchy playing annoying. Imagine a singer singing off pitch - most people can hear that. A sax player picks up pitchy playing and is equally annoyed.
Also if you listen real close - what is annoying you more likly is the ringing pitch in the reverb. Sax is a harmonic rich inst. so if the eq hits hard on the wrong feq. it changes the tone/pitch center of the player. that is why most sax player would rather not have to play in a mic. Also if you can't hear yourself well - you will overblow & there goes both tone & pitch.
you are probably right about the reverb / mic /pitch effect, as even Sanborn sounded a bit sharp when he started his solo, then he adjusted. Live gigs are brutal that way. Constantly having to adjust to the effects and the PA is a real pain. Even good sound techs have trouble getting it just right for the players. Give and take all the way...
@funkyroyx01 wow u hit it right on! true! if u can't hear urself a tooten' u can be squeelin thru out the whole set lol... awesome stuff though. HC and DS my fav's.
This is the blues, baby! Shove the tuner up your ... what I mean to say is - blues is about EMOTION. Both these players ooze it. The both play sharp on purpose (ala Jackie McLean). It makes their tone sound brighter, crisper and more emotive.
I don't use a tuner. These are great players. The only reason I ever made a comment about the pitch was because I thought it was out of character for players of this magnitude to be playing so sharp and not even tuned to each other. That's life. If I could not play like these guys, I would have kept my mouth shut...
They are good..no great.. players. Enough said. Thanks...
OK Whatever. That is because I make my living outside of music and threw away my jazz career to become a cardiologist. Oh, and yes, I can play. Trust me.
Hey, you ever hear of Tony Morales from the Rippingtons. He did the same but went into a computer career.
Your stupidity just made my day, can't stop laughing hahahahaah. Did you say "Oh Yes I can play". Ive just visited your page......glad to hear you are actually a cardiologist. You even had the audacity to mention the fabulous Tony Moralis in comparason to ya................hahahahahahah...... Maybe you should have said Yes I can move my fingers........... You have no idea of the true meaning of this art .......An artist that learned alone learned from someone very ignorant
grifgraf; Yes, i don't think Dolphy, Ornette, Coltrane or Archie Shepp worried too much about sharpness. It IS definitely down to emotion and forging a unique voice. Like yourself,I can't see any problem with Hank's (or Sanborns) solos. King Curtis, Maceo Parker & Hank are among my favourites. They rip my heart apart. Jackie McLean's "Bluesnik" is one boss album.
Crawford is one of the unsung heroes of this music. From his days in the Ray Charles band, his Atlantic dates as a leader, his CTI stuff, the band he co-led with Jimmy McGriff,he has always been very soulful and swung his ass off.
great great

It's interesting how the baritone player is the same person David played with in Here and Gone. Men who know what they're doin'.
Cheers and RIP, Hank!

Really, Hank IS far too "unsung"! In an age when I can't tell most alto players apart, I'll always recognize Hank!

Doensn't have to be. If you are out of tune, no matter how good you are, it is annoying to those with perfect pitch.

perfect pitch is over rated!!!

I agree with you-I only saying I think he is well within the limits of pitch. I would say 99% of people it would not bother
@ all.

@grifgraf Yeah absolutely, and you can then have someone like Cannonball Adderley pretty much in tune and sounding as crispier and one can get.
Mind you, I like your comment and these 'sharp' saxophonists too.(i.e Mclean etc)
God bless
