and i don't feel we need to be particularly well-read to do well in the GP exam - it's incredibly easy to spot topics, and u don't need to know the topic in-depth at all!

Of course, if people who CAN switch REFUSE to switch, that's a different matter entirely. Unfortunately, Singlish has become a first language rather than Mandarin or English. The government is trying to change that (The "Speak Good English" Campaign).
Yes, there are ignorant Singaporeans. However, that's not a majority. You should know about the A level GP papers and how much knowledge is required to do well in that paper. I've read quite a few, and the people who wrote them aren't ignorant.

Point taken about misuse of the word "gay". However, language in Singapore has evolved such that some words have developed extra meanings, such as "eh walao, your idea damn gay leh" (Your idea is really stupid).
Singlish is a problem. However, some people are unable to code-switch well, so they speak in broken English. It's the same if a person from France (example) tried to communicate in English and did not happen to be very proficient in it.

Singapore's Social Studies (Compulsory) Curriculum focuses on WW2 in Asia, Racial riots and their causes, and the History of Singapore. Secondary school History includes the Russian, French, Chinese Revolutions, the Black Death, etc.
Singapore's GCE A level GP/KI exams requires students to be well read, and to be reasonably proficient in English.

i've gone through the A level system myself and I have to disagree with the "reasonably proficient in English" part. A friend of mine got an A2 without knowing the basic rules of grammar, i.e. tenses and such. ;p Language plays a woefully small part in the overall marking scheme - during my time it was 20%.
and i don't feel we need to be particularly well-read to do well in the GP exam - it's incredibly easy to spot topics, and u don't need to know the topic in-depth at all!
