I am not a pilot, but I love aviation and I have several years' experience in the airline industry. I, too, felt much sorrow for Grigori, but I was touched by the way he handled it. Godspeed, Grigori . . .
Thank you kindly for the upload. I was having a real shitty day and this somehow lift my spirits. Loads of respect for the tough russians aviators (real men!) and their flying machines.
That was heartbreaking :( ,he loved his job so much, but what he did at the end was of freeing the bird to fly was so noble...good luck to that great PILOT... :)
I wonder what he had? Poor guy, he seemed so positive tho, LOL i even shead a tear. Such an emotional moment, he is right, it would be like losing a family member. I think aeroflot has been fixed up a bit now. Would love to hear from that guy again.
Gr8 documentary. End was so emotional. Retired pilot setting one bird free was so sensible step. Well retirement was for safety of his own & passengers, so he need to accept in assertive way. Giving such a news is second worst thing in physicians job (first one of demise). Long Live Aeroflot !
What a tragedy! One would think that Georgi could be reassigned to a less demanding pilot's job, such as flying cargo on smaller aircraft and on shorter routes. The risk to his health would be less and would enable him to fly a few more years.
I thought this thing was going to end with the pilot who lost his job end being a taxi driver. That would have been a fitting end to this pathetic story.
This Documentary is brilliant..thanks a real lot for posting...like others i was in tears at the end....when he speaks to the bird it is really a touching moment...i wonder what happened to that pilot after....i dont think he's still alive today
It's sad when a pilots career has to end due to health reasons. On the other hand: what did he expect? He was smoking, he was drinking, and he was overweight as we can see (lung issues, arteriosclerosis etc. all caused by tobacco, bad diet etc.) That's not what keeps you physically airworthy if you are 50+
Sad when so much experience as a pilot goes to pot like that, since experience is almost everything when it comes to flying. He'd make a more than exceptional and highly sought after flight instructor for the incoming pilots wishing to follow his career.
Thank you very much for uploading this documentary...I taped it on VHS when it was first screened in the UK about 1995, then lost the tape! One interesting change is that the final music, in the British version, at the very end when the retired pilot releases the bird, was the chorale 'Tsar Fedor Ioannovich'...absolutely electrifying with that final shot of the Illushin on approach through the trees. Thanks again!
What a tear jerker! This was an incredible documentary.

They should have let that pilot with the minor health trouble keep flying -- he's in better shape than most of those planes!

This documentary went from incredibly fascinating to heart-wrenchingly sad in like 12 seconds flat. That has to be some kind of record.

Beautifully shot, beautifully edited, and how great not to have a narrator.
Pity the credits were cut short. Who produced this?
