  • This would have been more interesting if it showed some high-strung violinist getting into a fight with a viola player and busting his viola over his head.

  • it's a viola..

  • violinist breaks viola... Am I the only one who finds that hilarious?

  • It isn't broken, he improved the sound quality...

  • @five5oclock ROFL -applause-

  • The tailpiece wasn't installed correctly...

  • @zucchini2007 Probably just old gut. I had one break in front of me last week while hanging for display.

  • he didn't break it. it broke itself

  • He actually said "Sorry, folks. My viola broke itself."

  • @LeTampinateur - Yeah they did. I would kinda agree with you. They probably should have continued on. Anyone know what the "Show Must Go On" way to handle this would be? Was it ok for the orchestra to stop? or should they have kept on going? Did they continue with the piece? I don't know...wasn't there.

  • @maverickdallas100 LOL>>>>you crack me up...LOL>>>

  • He kept his composure pretty well. Impressive. I don't know what I would've done in that situation. What can you when that happens? Did he at least get to go home early? ;)

  • the entire instrument is held together with tension from the strings. After a few hundred years of it being constantly restrung it is bound to happen once or twice.

  • It's not broken...

  • At least it was only a viola.

  • Real musicians don´t stop playing if something goes wrong.

  • @skater14michi Exactly! Why on earth he didn't press on is beyond the both of us.

  • @skater14michi HA HA HA

  • @skater14michi So, what was supposed him to do? the tailpiece flew out, it would have been impossible to continue with that viola. He has continued the concert using a Filippo Fasser's viola, and everything went perfectly well.

  • @LeTampinateur

But the orchestra stopped too. They should play on. :)

  • in soveit russai viola break you

  • Тхатьс фунны.

  • @RoHcket LOL, I was wondering about how to transliterate "Th" into Russian... thanks!

  • Guys back there faces' ..! just freaked oout! :) love his tranquilness :)

  • it is simply just a 5 minute fix, the metal wire probably unbuckled on the tailpiece,

  • @tommyv166123 The tailgut broke or unravelled, or the portion of the tailpiece that the tailgut is threaded through failed. It is a very simple fix, even out in the field. Professional musicians often carry backup instruments and spare parts. Orchestras usually have their own repair technicians. It is likely this viola was playable again in short order. Also it is a tradition for a fellow musician to lend an instrument to a soloist to finish the performance should his instrument fail.

  • @maverickdallas100 I had it happen while on first desk in an orchestra, the tailgut just frazzled away and let go. Fortunately it was a lot slower for me, not such a "sudden and radical equipment failure." My expression was something like 'ya miserable bitch,' as well; 'ya sorry whore!'

  • He just ... the whole violin!

  • i no wat a whore is...but a hoor!

  • Wouldn't have happened to Poindexter from Revenge of the Nerds

  • I HATE when that happens!

  • A Russian virtuoso, A priceless Italian violin, a $30,000 bow and a two cent tailpiece catgut holding it all together... PRICELESS!

  • Not exactly broken

  • Comment removed

  • THE TROP-BEARING POPPED BECAUSE THEY FAILED TO GREASE IT OFTEN ENOUGH. SUCH ACIDENTS ARE DUE TO PURE IGNORANCE ON THE PART OF THE BAND MAINTAINCE PERSONAL - SOMEONE IS IN BIG TROUBLE - TROP BEARINGS ARE HARD TO COME BY, THEY ARE MADE FROM SPOTTED OWL BRAINS AND RAT CHITTERLINGS - IF YOU PLAY A STRING INSTRUMENT, HAVE YOU TROP-BEARING GREASED OFTEN AND SAVE YOURSELF AND THE SPOTTED OWLS SOME MISERY!

  • can someone give me the name of the concerto?

it sounded nice for the few seconds it lasted....

  • Minor malfunction, he surely had a backup available, and if not, it's not more than a few minutes work. Charming reaction on his part though.

  • That awkward moment when...

  • sorry hoor = sorry whore

  • how can a violinist be playing a viola ? RETARD !

  • He is not a Russian Violinist, but Violist !

  • sorry ho

  • He called everyone a hoor

  • that violas bridge just fell off easy peasy fix!

  • The viola is fine... btw, it is a viola.

  • I'ts not broken... the tailpiece just flew out... Is'nt Bashmet fault....

By the way HUGE IGNORANCE FAIL!, Bashmets plays VIOLA ( a fifth lower big size, and a huge different sound) so he's a VIOLIST that gets an accident with a a turin's 1758 VIOLA (Is the trumpet and the tuba the same things? because they look so similar...)

  • @TheAltoviol GO GET 'EM, ALTO! I will help you fight the IGNORANCE engendered by the fiddle-players... :)

  • @TheAltoviol they life of a viola is hard enough without people getting the NAMES wrong. thanks for finally setting it straight!! :P

  • can domeone tell me what was he playing

  • @firedeathterror999 It sounds like he was playing Alfred Schnittke's Viola Concerto. There are a few recordings on Youtube of him playing it.

  • @firedeathterror999 dope dorry i dont dnow what dat id

  • double fail in the title: its not a violin and a violinist but a viola and a violist and he doesnt break it but its an accident. And its not just any russian violist, but Yuri Bashmet ist the best in the world ever!

  • it didnt break... if he dropped it and the body was smashed, that would be broken

  • Lmao. That happened to me once except it was only one string...

  • @pokesora101

His tailpiece snapped off, so all of the strings and bridge flew off

  • @adamcanhazmusic The tailgut broke

  • Quit playing those old peices of junk and get a new one thats not all rotten and falls apart in your face!

  • What the hell?

  • the viola is fine, the tail piece broke. the tail piece, chin rest, strings, bridge, etc. arent part of "the viola"

  • wow all i no it can be fixed easily

  • all that happened is that the tail piece came out. it's easily fixed.

  • that sort of thing can be fixed in 15 minutes. geez

    I liked his reaction

  • Thank God it was just a viola and not a legitimate instrument.

  • For god's sake he's a VIOLIST! Not a violinist.

  • He rocked too hard...

  • thats what you get when you finger it too much

  • @nekosama23 It could have easily happened while still sitting in the case.

  • ummm the title is a bit messed up....I believe it's "Russian VIOLIST Breaks Expensive Viola"...

  • he didn't break it, it was badly set up or just too old

  • NOW THATS WHAT WE CALL AN EPIC FAIL :P

  • it broke itself :p

  • The tail gut holding the tailpiece broke. A simple fix.

  • He obviously didn't break it, the bridge just snapped off

  • What is a violinist playing a viola?

  • @wolfy1476 Niccolo Paganini

  • violist*

  • ; A; I would have cried

  • There's got to be a viola joke out of this somewhere ;)

  • What exactly broke? I thought maybe it was the cord holding the tailpiece to the body.

  • @Hikikomori013 There is a cord acoss the pin (a piece of wood at the side of the viola), and it supports the tailpiece.

Hope that is helps you =)

  • @Gloomex

Thanks. I knew about that, but it happens so fast in the video that I wasn't sure if that was what broke.

It was a great performance up to that point.

  • looks like its just the bridge that snapped

  • thats an big violn, viola not violin

  • It's not a violin, it's a viola XD

and if he plays the viola, he's a violist not a violinist :P

  • just lol.

  • incredible reaction!its not at all a serious damage but its tragic to play in front of 6000 people and brake your instrument

  • i would have started crying if I were him XD

    but he just laughed

  • @dragonflygirl105 That is the hallmark of a true professional.

  • That can be easily repaired

  • EUROPEAN GARBAGE!

  • Except he didn't break it. Worst case scenario he knocked over the sound post, but that can be fixed easily.

Also, insert obligatory violist joke here.

  • It's only the tailpiece and bridge. A qualified luthier can fix that quite easily.

  • @johnsonfromwisconsin What does religion have to do with it??? Why would it have to be a Lutheran that fixes it instead of say, a Catholic or a Methodist or a Presbyterian???

  • Not a major fix - although, I probably would have cried after the performance! (just a little)

  • @crazycellist973 You musicians are so unstable.

  • @robertjohnson487 not at all

  • it's an easy fix, no real damage has been done

  • @metalguitarguy95 Actually it was irreparable. I read about this incident in the Wall Street Journal. There was hidden damage done to the main structure which made repairing it impossible. Tragic loss.

  • @robertjohnson487 Not at all true. The only thing that happened was that the tailpiece adjuster broke. All Yuri had to do was get a new one, reset the soundpost, place the bridge and put the strings back on.

  • @violatione Doubt you'd even have to reset the soundpost. It takes some force to shake them loose, even without any tension from the bridge.

  • @robertjohnson487 If there was by chance, any structural damage to the instrument, a good luthier would be able to completely restore it. Instruments badly broken have been restored to their original beauty and playability. Structural issues may be difficult or impossible to repair out in the field, but not in a properly equipped shop by the hands of a skilled craftsman.

  • He isnt " break "it . He just have to fix it easy.

  • @alexanderrybak4ever Actually it was irreparable. I read about this incident in the Wall Street Journal. There was hidden damage done to the main structure which made repairing it impossible. Tragic loss.

  • @angelhearts747 What?...Do you know what is 'sul ponticello'?

  • The look on the lady's face behind!

  • he didn't break anythinig ....actually nothing was broken !

  • @violonistchris Actually it was irreparable. I read about this incident in the Wall Street Journal. There was hidden damage done to the main structure which made repairing it impossible. Tragic loss.

  • It is kind of funny the expression of the violinist behind Yuri Bashmet after she hears the viola string broke.

  • not broken.

  • @angelhearts747 that's not true.

  • His face is pricelesss

  • Cunndolinez is right. Furthur more, the tailpiece gut broke, not the viola. Some people like to dramatize.

  • Wow the bridge and tail just popped right off! Oh well I am sure a talented luthier fixed it. Poor guy.

  • NOt broken.

  • That was so unexpected

  • oh là là...

  • The music sounded quite good actually lool But that must've been a huge disappointment. Smooth reaction :P

  • It's Yuri Bashmet, one of the most important violists, not violinist!

  • Its not broken. The tailpiece just came off...it was more dangerous for him, not the viola. lol

  • he reacted very relaxed and it actually wasnt "tragic"... and its not even serious damage

  • @TranceMasterXXX yeah your right its totaly fixable

  • Comment removed

  • lol that was totally in the middle of shnittke!

  • THAT'S SO FUNNY. he's like playing and the whole thing just cracks! the expression on his face... probably because it was cold.

  • Misleading title. It was an accident not that he broke it

Bashmet is really cool when performing live.

  • @cunndollnez BASHMET SUCKS!

  • Comment removed

  • At least he didn't split it in half like my friend did to one once .

  • It's really really unfair for this video to be labeled as it is. He didn't break it, and the reason that that happened is most likely related to either something loose or insecure, or the weather. It's happened to me before.

  • VIOLIST playing VIOLA

  • hahahah, those russians.....

  • funny... i hope i wont be in the same situation some day..

  • The title of this video is misleading considering he didn't actually break the instrument

  • Not only did he not break his instrument, but it is a viola and he is a violist, npt a violinist

  • violinist plays viola. khm

  • He is Russian VIOLIST Yuri Bashmet, and that is indeed a viola not a violin. The piece he was playing is Paul Hindemith's Trauermusik .

  • the viola is not broken lol its just the tailpiece that went flying. sometimes, however, musicians actually do dent or break the actual body in concert, when they fall down and stuff.

  • This isn't a violin, fyi. It's a viola.

  • hahahaha!

  • POWNED!!!

  • oh my...how did THAT happen...

  • tailpiece gave out, so the bridge went flying.

18th century viola by Milanese artist Carlo Testori

  • Actually, that's a viola -- please change the title of this video! The gentleman's name is Yuri Bashmet.

  • super!

  • Ouch, this makes me sad. Although it wasn't as broken as I first feared. It was just the bridge that popped off. I expected to see splintered wood.

  • yeah, i did too, I got scared for a second there

  • actually it was more than just the bridge. The tail piece broke taking the bridge with it. I'm sure he got it fixed right away to prevent warping. Crazy.

...and yes, to the person sharing the video. He's a violist and it's a viola he's playing.
