This would have been more interesting if it showed some high-strung violinist getting into a fight with a viola player and busting his viola over his head.
@LeTampinateur - Yeah they did. I would kinda agree with you. They probably should have continued on. Anyone know what the "Show Must Go On" way to handle this would be? Was it ok for the orchestra to stop? or should they have kept on going? Did they continue with the piece? I don't know...wasn't there.
He kept his composure pretty well. Impressive. I don't know what I would've done in that situation. What can you when that happens? Did he at least get to go home early? ;)
the entire instrument is held together with tension from the strings. After a few hundred years of it being constantly restrung it is bound to happen once or twice.
@skater14michi So, what was supposed him to do? the tailpiece flew out, it would have been impossible to continue with that viola. He has continued the concert using a Filippo Fasser's viola, and everything went perfectly well.
@tommyv166123 The tailgut broke or unravelled, or the portion of the tailpiece that the tailgut is threaded through failed. It is a very simple fix, even out in the field. Professional musicians often carry backup instruments and spare parts. Orchestras usually have their own repair technicians. It is likely this viola was playable again in short order. Also it is a tradition for a fellow musician to lend an instrument to a soloist to finish the performance should his instrument fail.
@maverickdallas100 I had it happen while on first desk in an orchestra, the tailgut just frazzled away and let go. Fortunately it was a lot slower for me, not such a "sudden and radical equipment failure." My expression was something like 'ya miserable bitch,' as well; 'ya sorry whore!'
you can tell the video is uploaded by someone who has no clue about instruments. he needs a new bridge and probably a new tailholder, which is maybe like 50$ combined. the viola itself took no damage at all it looks like.
