What you are seeing is the way the google rendering software creates the 3d earth in pie slices. Zoom in on both the north and south pole and you will find the same effect. Watch your altimeter at the screen bottom and see how close you can get to zero feet above sea level. You have to go slow or you will drift off center from the zero point. You will see a kalidiscope effect when you have it right.
