  • Loved this show, watched reruns on weekday mornings when I was on summer vacation. Wish I could relive those days.

  • Linda Lavin can't sing! Did nobody on the show tell her that? Also, although I never watched this show (too young at the time), anybody who did watch it feels that Flo, not Alice, was the true star.

  • 'Kiss My Grits!!!!'

  • Linda had a tendency to over sing, which is evident here as well as in the earlier version.

  • Kiss my grits!

  • linda lavin did NOT get along with diane ladd (ladd played FLO in the movie) Lavin was tough to work with.........

  • I want to watch every episode of this. Are they on DVD?

  • @b3astiemaninLA YES THE BEST OF ALICE..

  • wow, what a really sweet 70's time capsule ;)

  • I looked for Mel's Diner when in Phoenix. I guess it's there, but I never found it

  • @Duluth07 i believe its in LA not phoenix

  • @retroguy1976 Mel's Diner from this show is in Phoenix, sign and all. There are Mel's Diner 50's themed restaurants in Los Angeles and Florida.

  • @Duluth07 there is an actual mel's diner located in florida. there are about 4 or 5 of them:)

  • kiss my grits!

  • Linda Lavin did NOT get along with Diane Ladd....She wanted her off the show....I never liked Lavin anyway....but Alice show I did.

  • I was afraid of Mel! lol

  • I like "Two broke girls" but "Big Bang Theory" is probably the best

    sitcom on TV right now.

  • Oh how i hated this cast, the biggest bunch of white trash douche bags...

  • @latka101 Then you must really love Archie Bunker

  • is "alice" the longest-running tv series based on a feature-length film? the only contender i can think of is "happy days," but that wasn't really based on "american graffiti."

  • mel's dirty t-shirt deserves a place in the smithsonian, next to archie bunker's chair & fonzie's leather jacket.

  • @wallofvideo LOL!

  • bellissimo telefilm ! da ragazzo lo vedevo spesso !

  • I was just a very little kid when this show was on the first time around but we ( my brother and i ) used to watch it in reruns all the time, the theme song sticks out well in my head.

  • I like how each season had a different version of the theme song.

  • I love this song

  • Linda Lavin used to "add" inflections to her singing such as "kickin' myself for nothin'" and at 00:42 "stand on your own two feet." I don't know why she did that, either. Every season she'd redo the intro song; maybe she didn't like it, either.

  • Wow I remember this came on at 5pm on weekdays after Archy Bunker.

What happened to all the good sitcoms, everything is too serious now.

  • @drescorpio1114 - Because the 21st century sucks, period.

  • @drescorpio1114 I used to watch a lot of sitcoms in the 80s when I was a kid and I think most sitcoms today aren't as funny.... but I recommend giving a new one a try. "2 Broke Girls" on CBS. That show's pretty funny without taking itself too serious.

  • @SanDiegoSouth late 60's - early 80's was the best time for TV sitcoms and TV in general. Good shows today are few & far between. As far as sitcoms, IMO Everybody Loves Raymond was the last decent one. There's a few good dramas/action. Burn Notice is good, Walking Dead is good, Breaking Bad is almost......too good for TV!...what else? Sponge Bob! LOL Seriously...I love it. But the original & not the newer episodes as much. There's some great shows on Adult Swim. ATHF, Venture Bros., etc.

  • @drescorpio1114 you got old that's what happened

  • KISS MY GRITS, MEL

  • This was a very underrated show and, if i'm not mistaken, it ran sor about 9 seasons (1976-1984)...

  • I remember this show, but I sure don't remember the theme song. Maybe they changed it later on?

  • @LadyKittyn The lyrics and style changed several times. But the basic melody of the theme was the same.

  • Mel was awesome!

  • Anyone here remember Vic Tayback was a guest star on an episode of Star Trek (TOS) called "A Piece of the Action"?

  • nice

  • @ crassyfrake Listening to her singing now, removed all these years, she is *really* over selling it and sounds terrible, lol. I guess there is something to having the lead character singing about moving on it that lends some authenticity, but ouch.

  • @TaurenBedtime Yeah your right! It's almost like she's yelling the song.

  • did you know vic die shortly after the show

  • It is linda lavin.

  • I like the one's with FLO, where is FLO????

  • This theme song is horrible! And the singer can't sing.

  • @musicaltheatergeek79 It's actually Linda Lavin. The chick playing Alice. :-)

  • original theme is better. this is cheesey

  • MEL KISS MY GRITS !!!!! MY FAVE.SAYIN'

  • I loved watching Alice!

  • Get' em MEL!!!

  • did THEY really think the show would work with FLO? GIVE ME A BREAK NEL CARTER !

  • wait that's not flo ! dam nit

  • a show theme song and humor that was so 70s and wonderful. I worked in a pancake house as a kid 14 this year as a busboy in fort worth tx. wow

  • Mel and the frisbee he always managed to keep on his head stand out the most to me about this show. That and him being grouchy.

  • The older I get the hotter Linda Lavin gets.

  • Linda Lavin was a hottie.

  • Linda Lavin can't sing.

  • mel, kiss my grits.

  • This was the season with Belle! "Give me some sugar and ring my bells!" LMAO! Does anyone remember the episode when she became a country singer and wrote a song called "Uncle Bud?"

  • @GospelAccording2ME uncle bud's got cotton, uncle bud's got corn.uncle bud's got chillins aint never been born....oooo...aah, uncle bud

  • remember alice? it was a show about alice.

  • God oh i miss these shows :(

  • Flo was whole show, after Polly Holliday left the show was never quite the same,Polly left Alice because she wanted her own show "Flo" she owned a bar in that show called Flo's Yellow Rose,I think Flo lasted 1 season if that

  • @delideliver Your right, Flo {Florence Jean Castleberry} was my favorite in the show. When she left the show it was like losing a member of your family. Then they tried to replace her with the lady who played Flo's part from the movie "Alice". But it just wasn't the same. I felt the quality of the shows started to go down hill. The characters never grew or developed like they did on MTM. And i just stopped watching it from that point on.

  • @Buffalobigboy69 I agree, they got Belle(Diane Ladd) but no body liked her and she did not last long at all

I guess it was in Polly's contract that she could not come back to Alice if her show flopped, they did the same thing on 3's company when the Ropers wanted their own spin off,the agreement was if the show did not make 1 season they could come back,if it made it more than a season, the could;nt,of course it made it 1 season and got canned right after that

  • @softshu Wow yes I remember that too,...It was during the mornings or early noons during the weekdays back then thats right!! You have a good memory!!! I was so young, a little kid back then...

  • @softshu Those were great times indeed. Before reality shows and daytime court shows. Man I miss the 80s.

  • I loved this show too. Always watched the reruns on weekday mornings on summer holidays. Great memories.

  • I found out that the show is based around here in my neighborhood. The actual Mel's Diner is located just down the street from me. The sign and the outside of the diner was used for exterior shots. The diner is still open and I took my mom there for breakfast for Mother's Day. They have pictures of the cast everywhere. Great food! The hotel where Alice lived, The Desert Sun, is down the street from me also. It burned down about 5 or 6 years ago. So if your ever in Phoenix check it out!

  • Kiss My Gritts!!!

  • Vera was so weird, she was wonderful.

  • When this show was on back in the 70's, I had a crush on Alice (Linda Lavin).

I got sick of Flo saying over and over again, "Kiss my grits". Talk about a worn out joke.

  • @cheeriosinabowl Flo's kiss my grits was a trade mark, like Gary Coleman saying,"what'cha talkin about"

  • @delideliver

yes, but it got very tiring after a while. It's like hearing the same joke 20x.

  • I,think the show wasn't the same without Flo.

  • Who can forget the line..."Kiss my grits Mel!!!"

  • Boy what memories. I loved this show back in the day especially flos Kiss My Grits line.

  • I think they should bring it back on t.v. It still the stow I liked.

  • I think they should bring it back on t.v.

  • @softshu -- Right after the Jeffersons.

  • That Mel used to scare me when I was a kid. Mean motherfucker.

  • @ThiefInLaw Mel scared you? He was all bark, no bite. I always thought he was sexy.

  • @ThiefInLaw Linda Lavin's singing scared me when I was a kid....lol

  • @crassyfrake - And it STILL scares me!!! HAHA

  • @crassyfrake fuck yeah lol..thought it was just me

i kinda had the hots for her too, weird

  • Damn this show brings back memories.... damn i miss being a kid.

  • i want 2 watch this i love old shows and it was my mom's fave show when she was little

  • I love how Family Guy could not use this theme since the lawyers of this program felt that the music was fucking sacred.

  • lol@ Vera...she was my favorite!

  • Why don't the have good shows like this, welcome back kotter, the jeffersons and so on I hate these damn reality shows..

  • that bald guy was mean to those ladys otherwise he likes them

  • Kiss my grits

  • it's hard to find actors this good for today's shows.

    Gotta love that Mel LOL

  • LINDA'S acing was GREAT but her being a jew she controled...............

  • @kduideo

I am not sure what you mean about her being a Jew being controled. I also have no idea what Linda being a Jew had to do with her part on this show. Care to explain?

  • @Smartboy8877 Linda did NOT want to do a REUNION years back....SHE WANTED TOO MUCH MONEY. NO COMMENT

  • @kduideo

From what you wrote, it is my understanding that a reunion show was never done because Linda demanded more money than the studio was willing to pay her. Now are you saying that it was because she was Jewish that she was money-hungry and that is why she would not do it?

  • @Smartboy8877 no comment......it's adds TROUBLE. Linda is sweet as can be yet she is jewish.....MONEY DEMANDER....

  • @kduideo

I happen to be Jewish and I do not take kindly to this attitude! But I guess that there is really nothing that I can do about it being that you are protected by the Freedom of the Press Amendment. Oh well!

  • Sooo sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!

  • Writters ray dry "Kiss my grits" sad.

  • Where's Flo?

  • Great show that "Jumped the shark" after Polly Holliday left.

  • Glad I got to meet Linda, a really kind lady.

  • THis wasn't my show,it was my mom's show. I must have been really young, but I remember watching it with her. Mel was wicked!

  • During the fourth season of the series, this opening was aired on the final six episodes of the season, aired Sundays, March 2-April 6, 1980 (leap year version).

  • Kiss My Grits!!!! LOLOLOL

  • How come no one remembers this show? This show was hilarious!

  • Things are great when you stand on your own two feet!

Flo was the best, Belle was medium, Jolene was just ok.

  • It's amazing the random things you remember. I was 8 when this show aired and I still remember Mel's BLT- Bologna, Lard, and Tuna.

  • cant believe it isnt on cable

  • mels diner was closed today due to roach infestation.......................tommy filed for divorce from his sister nancy mckeaon now the whole world is fucked!

  • Not the same after Flo left :(

  • hi alice, want to make babies?

  • Alice is one of the best sitcoms ever...I can't believe they haven't done DVDs yet. The "Belle" season was the last decent one though....the Jolene years just didn't cut it.

  • Lol hearing this song again now refreshed my memory! I was a little youngsta when this show aired. Thanx for the memories :)

  • Kiss my motherfuckin grits

  • LOVE IT! WOW I WISH I COULD ...

  • I like this theme better! damn I'm old!!!

  • Personally I think that this was just one of many shows that programmed a portion of my generation into excepting the cooked food lifestyle. But I have to admit that I liked this show as a kid.

  • I remember praying and asking God to make me as good looking as Philip McKeon.

  • No offense but was Linda Lavin jewish..?????????????? She seemed like it

  • @kduideo Yes, she is definatly Jewish.

  • sad but true

  • OMG i remember this show like it was yesterday. I haven't seen it on tv in ages, but remember it vividly. back in the day when there weren't 300 channels. great show.

  • rthe kiss my gtrrits came along wghhen vic back insulted polly hoilday polly would say mel kissmy grits isay that otmy momwe joke bout it

    ievven imiate polly doing itlol

  • Did the actors do anything after this show?

  • @bronzesel linda lavin found a career on broadway. Vic Tayback passed away several years. Diane Ladd can still be seen in movies from time to time. Phillip McKeon is now a major hollywood producer (he's 44 now btw), Polly Holliday occassionally appears in movies in bit parts and as for Beth Howland, as far as I know she simply retired.

  • @richardthewriter, thanks for the information!

  • @bronzesel -As far as I know, Linda Lavin still tours, in her mid-70s, for crying out loud! Vic Tayback died 20 years ago, and I don't know what happened to the othe 2 main characters.....try Wikipedia

  • Does anyone have the version of this opening where Linda scats "Doo-do-do-do-do-doooo" along with the "Bum-ba-bum-bum-baaaah" piece?

  • I remember the kiss my grits thing, but had forgotten how the theme went. :)

  • the other version of this song is way better.

  • Mel used to kill me man LOL!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Qué viejo me siento de repente...

  • Who's the one who said, "Kiss my grits!" ?

  • Flo apparently the actress Polly Halliday and Linda Lavin didn't get on.

  • Comment removed

  • The character who said the phrase was Flo.

  • that was FLO who isnt shown at this time

  • RIP Vic

  • i loved this show! i liked it better when flo was on it. she was funny!!!

  • Did Linda Lavin sing the theme song?

  • yes she did

  • How come tv themes were better back in the day than now? Hell music was better back then too than today's shitty ass music.

  • No doubt. TV and music will NEVER be this good again. I'm glad I got to enjoy them. I feel bad for teens today and the shit they have to watch and listen to.

  • Calm yourself down Linda Lavin...."kickin myself fo' nothin" part is especially campy.

  • Ha ha!!! Calm yourself down Linda Lavin...."kickin myself fo' nothin" Yeah - sounds like she's driving and reaching into the backseat of the car to slap her kid around!

  • I agree! I used to love this show, but that singing...No comment! HA HA!!!

  • @TypesALot Yeah Linda was a great actress but as a singer.... sorry. LOL

  • I had no idea how amazing these song lyrics were until recently. I totally relate to this song and I pray I can apply it to my life.

  • Fuck, this takes me all the way back to being a kid....I remember my dad coming home from work with a silver colored watch on and this was on. Crazy, the things that ignite memory.

  • lol..lol..i loved this show...mel...kiss my grits..lolol

  • I liked Jolene over Belle.

  • @greendragon94 the same here greendragon

  • but, Uncle Budd was funny?????

  • @KANEMANFAN Uncle Budd had chicken. Uncle Budd had corn. Uncle BUdd had children ain't never been born!! That ish is hilarious!

  • @greendragon94 Sorry Belle was best of the three [Flo Belle and Jolene]

  • I couldn't STAND Celia Weston! I liked Dianne Ladd

  • Shame on Warner Brothers for not releasing this show in Complete seasons on DVD.

  • how many themes did this show have??

  • LOL - I think about 3. But the original was the best - by far. THIS ain't it.

  • Weren't here some full episodes on youtube? I love this show

  • Another example on why you should KILL YOUR TV.

  • You'd like TV to be killed? Fair enough. Be the change you would like to see in the world. Start at the home front: Kill Yourself.

  • This is a great song! And a great show, of course.

  • funkyyyyyyyyyy

  • love this show show

  • This is the 1980-'81 opening title, after Polly Holliday had left for her own series, "FLO" (which barely lasted a season and a half). Diane Ladd tried to replace her as "Belle", but it just didn't work out. So Celia Weston replaced HER as "Jolene" in '81, and stayed for the rest of the series.

  • Where's Flo? :(

  • This was after Flo took another job in another state,

  • This has bugged us for the last 4 days while on holiday in Majorca, you can't imagine the relief of getting home and looking it up, we loved this programme! :D

  • i loved this show as a kid

  • @vette9093 I did too. The Jeffersons, All in the family, Threes company, Happy Days Bob Newhart, Mary tyler Moore....etc. Those were good shows back then, made you laugh.........Yea, 3 channelss +uhf. Played outside, had to be home before the street lights came on.

    Fun Times!!
