there are two ways to complete your order. If you want to sign a paper receicpt then YES the cashier can compare. If you sign the card pad the cashier can not see your signature. If ppl would like ID to be checked then they can place a security check on their personel card through the card credit holders. WalMart has been sued over this very issue customers claiming invation of privacy. If you do not offer the cashier CAN NOT ask.
I was once asked to show ID for a $3 purchase of an Italian ice in Venice, CA recently and I refused by saying I didn't have any and the cashier just had me sign. In fact, credit cards itself should be photo IDs (like Bank of America debit cards) so that they won't see IDs that has private information in it
@NHRHS2010 The credit cards ARE the ID. They have your signature on the back. I don't agree with the photo non-sense on the card, it is a false sense of security. The merchant needs to compare the signature, not a photo or name/signature on another document not related to the card it's self. If merchants took the due diligence to actually examine the card to ensure all of it's security features were present (micro print, UV light marks, holograms etc.) and simply compared the signature (cont)
@thelucky225 Then there would be no issue, instead they rely on false senses of security, such as a 'photo id' which can be faked, then the are counterfeit cards which WILL match REAL IDs, however lack security features mentioned above. Then there are cards where people write to their actual card's magstripe with someone else's card number. The terminals display the last 4 digits swiped so that the merchant can readily verify if it's the same card. The card it's self is where the security is..
@NHRHS2010 Border crossing, keyword being CROSSING, is a whole other animal, you are entering another country's land and must play by their rules if you wish to enter. Now border patrol CHECKPOINTS on the other hand, especially those that exceed the scope set out in Martinez and have no nexus to other roads that intersect with another country 100 miles from the border, that I have an issue with, as well as domestic air travel, which is a common right for US citizens see 49 USC 40103(a)(2)
@thelucky225 Yeah of course. Btw, just to let you know that you will really want to bring your camera if you ever go to Disney World or Universal Studios (at least in Orlando) since they ask for ID for credit AND debit card purchases and that stupid policy is strict. They'll really turn you down if you don't show your ID. Although they only check IDs in the ticket booth in Universal Studios, they check IDs for EVERYTHING for credit card purchases in Disney World, even if you just buy a drink!
@CourtneysAuntSara You obviously don't understand how credit card transactions work, when the receipt is printed that the customer signs, the transaction is NOT complete, the customer has to actually sign the receipt, the merchant has to turn the signed receipt in for credit with the approval number for the transaction. You have the customer sign, you check that signature against the one on the back of the card, if they don't match you place a code 10 call to mastercard/visa.
@thelucky225 LOL "You obviously don't understand how credit card transactions work" *hillbillytalk** Why, ya'll aint known of the new fangalled e-lec-tronic sign'in ma'sheen"** FYI customers almost always sign the signature screen, NOT a double printed receipt. The only time the customer signs with a pin is upon request by that customer or if the clear key on the register is hit twice. I "obviously don't understand how credit card transactions work". Really!

@CourtneysAuntSara Again, the transaction is NOT complete until the merchant turns the receipt in / batch processes approval code. Even if you sign the signature pad it shows it on the register as well as prints it on the receipt, not to mention you can look at the fucking signature capture screen that the customer signed.. wow that new fangled technology is so complicated *rolls eyes*
@thelucky225 Dude the display of the signature varies form store to store. At my store on the newer system we CAN NOT see the customers signature at all. The signature does not print out at all.
@CourtneysAuntSara Not to mention the fact that the customer swipes the card themself should give you common sense attitude that the merchant isn't too worried about looking at the card or anything else for that matter, if the merchant was really concerned they would be asking for the card not providing a means for the customer to process the transaction themself, in the case of Wal-Mart the registers display "CHECK SIGNATURES" on purchases over $100, notice the register didn't display CHECK ID
@CourtneysAuntSara Blocked for being so retarded you posted the same comment 3 times. Walk your lazy ass around the counter and check the signature or place a code 10 call, next time try reading, or is there "know way" for you to read these comments.
@CourtneysAuntSara Hillbilly talk? Take a look at your first comment, "@thelucky225 here the thing there is know way for a cashier to compare the signatures." "know way" huh? Who's the hillbilly again?
@ScottSmylie Just depends on the cashier/manager on duty. I got into it last night at a DIFFERENT wal-mart and didn't get it on cam I'm so angry I forgot my cam last night. I had mastercard on speaker phone schooling them, then they printed the receipt, took my card and WALKED OFF WITH BOTH RECEIPT & CARD it was ridiculous! They finally gave both back and let me go. I'll be filming though, yesterday was a fluke, I go nowhere w/o the cam from now on! =P
Knowing that they should not refuse the sale if you don't with to show your ID, I have always wondered what would happen if I decided not to. What normally happens when you refuse the first time?

@thelucky225 Yeah you're probably right. Being asked for ID can be real annoying. But what about at places like the airport or the border crossing?
