Start an aviary? Do research of what murderers house sparrows are. They are relentless in their attacks on our native species, cavity dwelling bluebirds, martins and many others. No matter how many nest boxes empty you have they will find one being used and kill the babies or the parent if she is protecting her eggs or babies. I loved all birds until h.sparrows moved here chasing the bluebirds away. I never thought i could hate any bird. They peck the top of a b.bird's head off, too mean.
aww there pretty cute i have a sparrow to only one though we found him at a day old with a broken toe he is now 1 year old and he still is cute my sparrow cant be released cause his toe is still injured and he has nown nothing but people his whole life
@MrDenizen Not where I live in the outer suburbs of London. There used to be loads of 'em......Not anymore. Plenty of starlings, robins, wrens and the odd green parakeet....But no sparrows. Have to say though that I drove up my Mum's road the other day and heard them chirping away, it was odd enough for me to notice the noise, and funniliy enough one sat outside the window of her house.
@Butchuk2007 - ok, I'll be honest here. Maybe 10 years or so ago there was hardly any sight of them where I live.. it was rare to see/hear them. Now though, it's business as normal. Maybe it was the explosion in population of the magpie? We hardly saw any of them in the past, now they're everywhere.. cackling away. Perhaps the sparrow population took a hit due to competition for food, then slowly adapted to the new situation? Maybe the other birds have displaced the sparrows near you.. for now?
This birds are so cute that even when they are trying to be mean they don't look mean they are funny! How can I start an aviary of House Sparrows anybody??
Your in the US? Here in the UK House Sparrow are few, probably due to modern farming, removal of hedges and less availability of grain. Send some over!
I loved seeing this, it just confirmed to me that when David my husband & Spoggy our male (imprinted) sparrow play fight like this, that we are doing our best to try and bring about similar conditions to life with other sparrows. We have just the one male & he shows us clearly when he wants to play fight & he does this about 4 times a day. Then after it is over, he is back on your arm. This is a sweet video obvious who the winner was. Love and light Susan and Spoggy in Tasmania xxxx
looks like they are both cocks, the other not yet in full moult. the other one, lighter colored is also cock and is still a bit dull. well, if you don't think I'm right ask Hellamund.. I'm sure they're in full color now!
This is common since birth. All birds play steal the food game. You do feed them fryed rice and cooked pasta too right? Peanut butter sandwiches is also good for them. Keep them away from open screened windows unless you have bars on them. You don't want a raptor breaking your screen and eating your sparrows right?
My sparrows loved pasta, cooked pork loin, hamburger, french fries, and just about whatever I could hold for it to snack on... Thier main diet was seeds..
Don't forget that you can crush up a generic "Multi-Vitamin" and sprinkle it over their food. You should only use a pinch. Careful not to get vitamins with Iron in it. All birds need high vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), and A. Children ceral is a high in Riboflavin.
They're so cute when they're trying to be intimidating XD

They are trying to be badass and scary, but somehow they still look like small funny and cute chicks!

Haha - I guess the "fight" posture is only scary if you're another house sparrow. Otherwise it's just cute.

We don't see many sparrows in the U.K now. At one time you could always hear them chirping away. Now it's quite unusual to actually see them at all.

@Butchuk2007 - dude, you're kidding right? "Don't see many sparrows in the UK"? Do you have a window? Ok.. look out of it. There's a sparrow ;)

If you get them when they are babies, you can train them to recognize you and not be afraid of you.

I guess they're really territorial or something, they don't want the other one getting in their way. Or, they could just be really greedy...?
