Nice trick. Two balls put together touching and facing the target. You then hit the one nearest your club, and the other one creates the backspin. You can see the second ball pop up at impact on the video.

Guys, It has to do with the ball. Get one of those older model Titleist tour balata balls and with a 60* wedge and firm swing....you can back that thing up 20-30 ft out of a green side bunker with the right ball contact.

you can if you hit it right.... i can scoop that thing out of a bunker with my 64 and get it to stop dead and my wedge sucks.... think of it like pitching from the fairway.... hit down on the ball and then go through the turf (sand in this case), you'll have the same effect

Yeah i know all of this i play off 11 but even if i hit this type of shot there is no way me, him, you or any professional could get that much spin from there. BTW the club head doesn't make contact with the ball, so it doesn't matter if your wedge sucks or not, so long as you have enough bounce on the club.

that is my point though, you can make contact with the ball if you get at it right, and the wedge does make a difference, the grooves are worn and the face is smooth.... i'm sure if i went to a vokey it would come back

My last comment didn't post so I'm gonna make it short. You don't make contact in a bunker because it's too unpredictable. You hit 1/2 an inch to 2 inches behind the ball. Check out Ian Woosnam's fairway to heaven video, he hits it exactly like this but never gets this obscene amount of spin. The club's grooves don't matter.

no you don't traditionally hit it like i said, but if you can you can, so why not do it? i hit down on the ball sometimes, sometimes i try to scoop it, usually i just hit it like you are supposed to, but when hitting down on the ball or scooping it you don't get the bunker sand in the way, just contact with the groove of the club, so they do matter, a lot

Umm yeah i'll stick to hitting it like ALL the professionals do which is much easier than trying to predict where the ball will land when you catch the ball first and then how much it will spin is another factor. Also you risked chunking it out of sand when you "Hit down and catch the ball first" and it is just too unreliable. What do you play off? If you land in too many bunkers i doubt you would be off anything less than 15.

I dont play out of bunkers too much but if the course isn't busy i throw a couple balls in there to get some practice.... and i can't be certain but i know there is at least one professional that scoops the ball off the sand, it might be harrington, but regardless, golf is a game that you can play so many different ways, it allows you to be creative and try new things. For instance I play very aggressively, and right now it is paying off, i was an 8 about a month ago... shot 2 over yesterday

wtf you obviously don't know what you are talking about Harrington doesn't "scoop" his bunker shots he hit through the ball and like ALL pros he catches it fat 2 inches behind the ball. Also, playing aggressively means nothing unless you have a short game, and it doesn't sound like it to me the way you go about things. Point is, you don't get that much backspin from a bunker without 2 balls.

And i'm pretty sure you watched a video of Harrington hitting out of a fairway bunker, if not it was like a 60 or 90 yard bunker shot, simply because the ball wouldn't fly far enough to get to the hole if you hit it fat.

who cares...my point was he grew up watching ben, arnold, jack, etc play and still goes his own way... if you know anything about golf you would know that pros do whatever the hell they want to make the shot... there is no set way to hit a ball out of a bunker, you don't have to be a dick because i can create shots, and opportunities and you can't, or because i put in the time to get different results than just playing a generic boring ass way, i guess golf is just more fun when i expand my mind

figure i would just put the final stake in the argument.... played before work today, landed in a front bunker with back pin placement on a par 3, grabbed my 64 degree wedge, scooped it off the sand (no spray)... ball checked and stopped 3 feet away.... and keep in mind that is a crap off brand wedge
