Yikes, that was a bad move. What went through his mind to decide to overtake the large vehicles at the corner? That's just asking for trouble. Pulling in behind it would've been my move. Christ was he lucky. At that speed too, he would've just ploughed into the tractor had it not turned off. Scary!
ihave just taken my bike test and it was way harder than the car test,,bike learning has opend my eyes to a whole new driving exoerience,,all car drivers should be made to do a bike test in my opinion..\
thats called a cheap lesson, no one hurt and yet everyone so much more wiser. good videos, we are all human at the end of the day. It sometimes seems that the only perfect riders are the ones who never leave the chairs in front of their computors...
The hazard lines were an early indication of a possible hazard ahead- in this case a junction- so please remember to keep an eye on these, they are for your benefit!
because people who take the bike test are better road users. This isn't a bike test anyway, its an advanced course, this kind of riding is something to develop after you pass your test. Still should have seen the tractor though!
The one factor which is not demonstrated in this clip is fatigue. The rider is nearing the end of a very intensive day and sometimes these things happen,
@balf1111117373 Thats rubbish to be honest, a bike test is not 10x easier than a car test. You must either be a bad driver or a really good rider. The UK test, well mine anyway, was quite thorough and I could imagine certain levels of rider failing it.
only one question, you saw the developing hazard yet didnt warn him, was there a radio problem? i think telling him the moment you saw it may have been an idea, or did you feel it may have unnerved him and therefore caused a worse problem?
even so, he should not have overtaken in that road condition anyway wouldnt you agree?
I can see where you coming from, but on occasions you have to give the rider some indepedence and assess situations themselves. This was one of those occasions. I can see where you are coming from. It is a balancing act all the time when you are out training and I usually only have 8 hours to assess and look for things to improve.
mummy why didnt daddy come home after his bike run today...........good god, not worth thinkin about . was it lack of concentration or just over confidence. ?? silly lad. ...............ride safe
I am afraid it is a habit of mine, which I inherited from my Police training, when we did not have intercoms and when all the motorcycles we were on had the same power. It is hard not to do it, but I can see where your comments are coming from. I have to make an early decision about the riders I am out with and soon get to know what they are going to do. It is having the confidence in them, and they don't mind.
A fair example of not using the information gained during the observation phase of the manoeuvre. While I agree that overtaking on an open left-hander was fairly safe the rider might have considered re-assessing what he could see rather than just blasting through. He got away with it - this time!!
Hi Nigel, You are posting some great videos. Can you explain why there is a great need to make progress? It seems on a lot of your videos that some moves are possibly unneseccary and increase the chance of accidents or am I missing the point? Can I ask, when you overtake do you/student go above the speed limit to clear the cars? If the car in front was traveling at the speed limit would you still overtake or just need to get past anyway. Excuse me for being a bit dim! Thanks Mark
Al clips shown are within the speed limits. With overtaking a bit of an oen question, which you could write a book on. If the vehicle in front are doing 60 mph for example on the open road, no overtakes.
If they are doing 50 to 55 mph, in my opinion they are not making progress, so holding me up. I can not see a problem in just 'pinching' a little in speed to make the overtake SAFE. So up to 65mph to make the overtake and then straight back to 60mph.
firstly, how come no audio untill the very last moment..did you have issues?
and then we have the rider.. WOW he was even going arond a bend at the time, i cant believe he/she even did the moneovuor.. it was daft and unsafe... and was that you doing the horn or the drivers?
Great video, I feel for the rider as this is an easy mistake with a gentle left-hand curve and slowed traffic. Any one of those vehicles could have attempted to turn right or overtake with little warning. Nice to see the Micra move over!
I reckon 2-3 cars at a time is the max for any overtake - what about you guys?
I can see where you are coming from. The view across the valey was uninterupted and nothing was coming, so quite safe to overtake on the left hand bend. What the rider should have done is considered just waiting a little in the gap between the two groups of vehicles, assess the developing hazard and then make the decision to continue.

In Australia the bend would of have a solid line, instead of the stripped. You wouldn't of been aloud to overtake in the first place

I have watched many of your vids now and the information is great.
My question is:
Is there a reason why you ride so close to the bike infront?
If he spilled you would have litte or no chance of stopping and it also narrows you own view.
Thanks

So long as you plan for the overtake, being able to assess the every changing situation, then no limit, I'll find an example

Thanks Nigel - do you reckon you could get the VFR upgraded with an airhorn :o)

Would yo believe that I have a Stebel Nautilus compact fitted. Trouble is the Autocom filters out most of the background noise.

I never would try to pass so long a line. That would earn you a nasty fine here in the U.S. if you don't decorate the grill of a truck first.

Ye Gods That Rider made a huge mistake, overtaking far too many vehicles especially on a Bend.He must have a Deathwish.
