  • Heather is seen as iconic of Scotland, where the plant grows widely. When poems like Bonnie Auld Scotland speak of "fragrant hills of purple heather', when the hero of Kidnapped flees through the heather, when heather and Scotland are linked in the same sentence, the heather talked about is Calluna vulgaris. - The heather in lore, lyric and lay: by Alexander Wallace-Google Books. Books.google.com. 2008-07-22. Retrieved 2010-01-27. So this is definitely Scottish.

  • I had to perform this song in all county choir earlier today, really is a fun piece.

  • I thought this was written by an Irishman and was about Co Antrim in Ireland correct me if I am wrong, but I dont mind if our Celtic cousins nick it.

  • i love scottish music

  • Wow this song is so amazing and beautiful. It is sad because im 19 and most people my age have lost touch with what good music is. I mean I don't know if god exist, or if your soul goes to heaven when you die. But when i listen to this music I can feel the artists "soul". It seems people don't make music with their heart as much anymore. Maybe there is no reason for life. But when i hear this music and i see the beauty of Scotland and of the world, it doesn't matter because im happy

  • Irish song by Makem And Clancy

  • @Coughlan1916 ah, no. The Clancys and Makem did it on their 1962 "The Boys Won't Leave The Girls Alone" album, but in the liner notes they make it VERY clear that this is a Scots song that they learned from Northern Ireland balladeer and collector Francis McPeake - who happens to be of Scots descent.

  • @RoadWolf98 News to me the McPeakes our of Scots descent, but I am sure they dont mind, must look at Wickepeda

  • Aww. :)

  • I'm from Saudi Arabia and say Scotland is a beautiful country and culture has a beautiful country it really is worth a visit, will be visiting your country in the coming holiday

  • RIP Lassie, I feel your loss

    Love from Scotland

  • Who cares if its Scottish or Irish, we're both Celtic...lets leave it at that.

  • Warum kann man Eure Platten nicht kaufen?

  • @rebellenwitwe go to their website, the link is in the video description above

  • Cannot believe the squabbling going on. The Scots were an Irish tribe that moved to Scotland. So really, with the two sharing such roots, surely you can just be happy the song is being heard. Some people think Irish, some people think Scottish. The point is moot, it's a gorgeous song.

  • @SaintRafem are you seriously suggesting that Scotland was uninhabited before the Irish-Scotti tribe came over? No, Scotland was inhabited by the Picts and Caledoni before that. You're right that we shouldn't be squabbling over these things though. I bet most of the people commenting aren't even from Scotland or Ireland and therefore should just keep quiet about the whole thing. It is a gorgeous song, but claiming we're nothing more than an Irish tribe is just incorrect.

  • @Ian76296 No no, didn't mean anything like that. I was just saying that we're obviously going to have similarities in culture because of a shared root, and the fact that people are trying to distinguish differences between them seems pointless. I could perhaps understand if they're afraid of losing national identity, but bringing it to verbal conflict doesn't do anyone any favours. As I say though, it's a nice song, it doesn't need to be anything more than that.

  • @SaintRafem yeah I totally agree with you there, gorgeous music

  • @bluebellswimmer no way! obviously uv never been to scotland. its knowm fort its countryside, lochs and mountains maybe the song isnt scottish but who cares when it comes to scenery scotland is way better than ireland and u cant have much of a better summer then us. YOUR RIGHT BESIDE US!

  • I love Scotland :D

  • honored to be scottish, just wish i was full blood

  • The song The Braes of Balquhidder was written by the Scottish Robert Tannahill (1774-1810). The Irish Francis McPeake, a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, rewritten, I repeat, only rewritten it (Wild Mountain Thyme", also known as "Purple Heather" and "Will You Go Lassie, Go"). Many ignorant Irish, some of them you find even in these comments, are wrongly convinced that Ireland invented the song

  • @TheManabu02 Well well Jock dont get your knickers in a twist its only a song

  • @MICHAELCAMPBELL69 Campbell? A very nice snd historic family name, better than mine which translated in english makes Bushgam... horrible...

  • @TheManabu02 Not bad but I have always wanted to be called O Neill dont know why.I suppose we all want what we have not got.Today names are not so important, but I would be happy with most names except Polish to hard to pronounce for most people

  • never heard the story im part english and scottish and don't understand why they don't get alone .why cant they get alone instead ofhating eachother

  • @1991jarhead : The English crown has insisted for thousands of years that Scotland belongs to it and since has spent its time conquering and killing the Scots with its armies and demanding that the Gaelic traditions and language be beat out of the Scottish people. Scots had their own peerage, their own landing, their own traditions and the English had to control everything by force. That's why they don't get along. Watch Braveheart

  • Comment removed

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • The only difference between the Irish and scots is that the Scots conquered England, and the irish were conquered by England.

  • @cfc67 I'm American and dang near fell off my chair laughing at your comment!

  • @cfc67

*Sigh* yet another user who gets their history wrong. shameful. Scotland, as you know, is part of the UNITED KINGDOM (united meaning "together", einstein) and Ireland is not (That is why it's called the REPUBLIC of Ireland, Sherlock.) Infact it' the other way around, Ireland defeated Englad and won there freedom after the Easter rising of 1916. GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT PEASE!!!

  • @trikkinikki360 your comment is everything that is wrong with the mythical irish. Your country is stil ocupied in the north. King James of Scotland brought the English to a united britain after the english failed for hundred of years to conquer scotland. It was Scotland who made England surrender after there centuries of war and bully tactics failed. The English should have learned from the romans and stuck to their side of the wall.

  • @trikkinikki360 Actually I think he was talking about the Middle Age, when William Wallace was invading Northern England after wiped them out of Scotland, and Ireland was still in the hand of England.

  • @trikkinikki360 Actually if he was talking about the Middle Age, he's right, Wallace invaded Northern England after wiped the English out of his homeland, and Ireland was occupied by England, just watch Braveheart, you'll see, it's my favourite too :)

  • @cfc67 let by bygones be bygones it is history let it stay there i can can trace my linage back to the Vikings north of Aberdeen.at the end of the day we are all Jock Tamsons bairns.

    Greetings from Palermo, Italy

  • Nice nature, nice song and one of my favorite countries in the whole world! Long live Scotland!

    Best regards from Serbia!

  • Makes me proud to be from scotland :D

  • I don't care about the arguements below. Not of Interest to me. This song reminds me of my Mother who passed away from Life in 2006. She was a Lassie from the Highlands of Scotland. She had a Love for her Homeland of Scotland and instilled this love of Scotland into her Children. Our family comes from Mull and Skye and the Blood Runs Strong in our Family. Long Live the People of Scotland and Greetings from Australia. God Bless both our Nations and Irish Welsh Brothers Greetings

  • I am Irish, and this calls to me...so beautiful

  • its a video about scotland stop saying england ur ruining it for the people who want to see the video yah ejits and moan the celts alba gu bragh

  • Governments around the world claim to represent thier peoples. This is cockadoodles. The only thing a folk can do to preserve its independance is to nurture its cultural identity. Political identity does not exist. Pass your traditions along to the next generations and share them with the world. They are all as beautiful as they are unique.

  • Oppressive government is the problem."Our problem". And Cultural differences are just being exploited to gain emotional control of both the English & Scottish. Government is the problem. We need separate governments that represents "The Cultural Values" of Scotland, Wales, England, and Ireland.

  • Its tripe like this that the SEPRATIST .Snp have pitched to people in our countryand some fools have swallowed it!But behind the crap, behind the shortbred tin politics, behind videos of mountains, and bagpipe playin, behind the folk songs, and a mythical view of history., lies..something vile. and evil....A RACIST hatred of the English people of this island. And their HATE is strong, make no mistake. They also hate the Union of the people of this island the Scots Welsh.English. Irish.thats no myth

  • By .fk ..is this how low, how desparate SepRatists can get!! Vido,s of Scenery!!We,ve got the BEST!! scenery in the world,in Scotland so we have.. they say..Who gives a monkeys!! wit a load a aul manure!!Video, sof people staring at FLAGS!!...Video,s of people singing aul "folk songs" with mountains in the background...Geezersplayin the bagpipes!!Crappy ,kitschy, sentimental NONSENSE!!...Throw in some tripe about how "the english"!! have "oppressed" us..And you have ALL the CRAP of the SNP ethos.

  • im fae scotland and a love scotland. england aswell coz the queen from there. most of our soilders are all from the uk an ireland and they dont have any diff coz they fighting to help other ppl and i love that so fuk all the shit a hate u coz u english scottish or irish we all the fukin same!!!!!!!

  • @bob231194 what?

  • Alba gu brath!

  • When Drew Kirk sang this in neighbours it was the greatest moment in soap history

  • Typo - Fyvie

  • is full of songs which started out in one country and gradually changed. Take for instance The Bonnie Lass Of Fyve (Scottish) and the American folk song (Fennario)! The world is also full of people who have claimed to have written songs which were in fact in the folk reptoire already. Even Rod Stewart claims this song as his on his sleevenotes :-)

  • I'm from Greece and this sounds great to me !

  • A Great Irish song, come on Ireland!!"!

  • @Jorosscollector01 But the video title says clearly that this's a Scottish's

  • OK You dot are obviously not for me but lets be the best Scot

  • My granda's grandfather wrote this, im not even lieing, his names Tommy (Thomas) McCrudden and its the mcpeakes who own this song x

  • @weeDerv08 As far as the words go they were written by Robert Tannahill a Scottish poet who lived in the 18thC - though I think it is even thought he'd adapted them from an existing folk song. All McPeake's version does is move the order around, change the odd bit and repeat some lines. Other than that it is basically a complete lift of part of the lyirc from Tannahill's "Braes of Balquhidder". The tune is different though has a similar feel - possibly just morphed in the folk process. The world
