If the manufacture says its ok then go out. I'm sure when you buy the original white wall tire that they make it thicker for when they do that process. The white wall should be thick so you don't have a blow out, it's the most important part of the tire for people do to something that stupid like that.
Just turn the tire to the smooth side clean it real good with hot water and dish soap and a scotchbrite get some white latex primer sealer from hardware store and paint a white wall around the tire. its a lot faster less of a mess and looks better, this is the way I did it in the old days...
@ghostrider3306 This is ACTUALLY how whitewalls are made at the factory. They just use a lathe to take the black rubber off the top. So honestly they're no worse than any other whitewall tire around. The tires turned out very nicely too!
@HedgehogOutdoors Well.. If'n you watch all 'em videos, you're a better man than I am. I was just thinkin' tonight that I've got so many that I can't even imagin what all I done put out there. hahaha. Welcome aboard. glad to have the company.

@stovebolt50 I painted the new old 16" ers I got from Tyler. They were already wide whites but badly stained and I got some whitewall paint and painted over them again to make them nice and white, which I could also do on those back ones, if they ever yellow..
@thechevyscrounger No but I've still got them. I found a pair of 16" wide whites and mounted spoked wheels on the back just at the end of the summer, but the ones I scraped are in the shed in case I want to put them back on, or use them on another project. They look crazy cool..

just so u know folks, not every tire has that much white wall underneath like that.i was looking to do the ones on a 56 buick i have and was talking to different places that shave and there are only certain brands thatll let you shave more than a 1.5" white wall,so do some homework first.i have a bug i put porta walls on and wasnt happy because i went with a wider tread than what the porta wall was meant for so they didnt sit right.on my buick,i went with gt radial champiro 75. u can shave those
This isn't really safe, I work for a the largest tire mauf. In the world and the way a tire is made the layer you grind through is one of the strength layers on the side wall and I know this because my job is to make the side wall of the tire
I've done this a couple of times and I've got to make this important note to others who may do this--go slow with the first one, because there is quite a bit of variance as to how much white wall is inside the tire, some have much less than others, and it's easy to grind too far if not paying close attention. Try it on a junker tire first to get a feel for how it works.
@6ZYX6 Beats me! Last thing I'm worried about too... I'm lookin' for the look. Port-a-walls are okay, but I wanted real.. and I like the idea that I made 'em myself..
@rpeek Of course, big DIY fan here! What I mean by ¨will they last a bit less?¨ is more like a ¨won't they fall appart while driving?¨ question!
On the process of building my own rat and haven´t got to the tires yet, and actually I dind´t know you could do it this way. I was planning on port-a-walls (thought it was the only way).
@6ZYX6 Well, they haven't yet. It shaves a fraction of an inch off the outside. I can't say if it's a horrible thing to do or not. All I know is that it looked cool.. hahahah.
@rpeek Lol, what makes me worry is sometimes the car will shudder a little when turning over. Is your ratrod anything like that on start up? If it is, would make me feel more confident about starting the car on axle stands. Hell it's not even really a shudder, more like a little shake during the cranking.
what color green is that? it is awsome, are they factory bought green or did you paint them....I know you did on the spoke wheels but what about the back ones....thanks
@s13rb20power I just got a can of green rustolium and a can of yeller and dabbed a little of this and a little of that in a potato salad bowl till I liked the look of it, then slapped it on there with a brush. Them was old style chrome reverse wheels, 8" and rusty.. The green worked out real nice.. It's all dried up now so ifn' I get me some new wheels I'll have to mix up some more..
@sexyman7732 I don't know. I'm takin' off maybe a 16th of an in inch or less of rubber. I've been runnin' 'em and they seem great, but I've had a lot of folks predicting my iminent death.. hahaha. I'm still alive so far.
@miraclepieco Yep, you can buy special paint to do that with. Port-a-walls used to be pretty common too, but I don't think they works so well with radials..
A flap disk grinding wheel would work GREAT for the final touch on tires. They sell them in various grits (80, 120) and they bolt up just like a regular grinding wheel. Nice video! Thanks!
ok i tried this and used a goodyear wrangler rts worked perfect looks awsome then i tried a michilen or however you spell it and the white was thin on this tire and went thru into the black again so no im looking for some more rts wranglers but this does work and not that hard at all.
you could make a cardboard box shroud around the tire...and you might be able to set up a shop-vac in such a way to catch some of the dust that comes right off the grinder to prevent your whole shop (lungs) from getting coated in rubber dust.
@fuelinjectedmaniac Far as I know. You can take a grinder and scrape some of the black off and see how wide the white strip is underneath if you want. Some of the guys who show how to do this on youtube do it that way first to see, but seems like they all have the wide strip underneath. I've only done mine so I can't say for sure..
very clever way to do it, by wheel rotating you need only to hold your grinder in a stead location and get the best round edge finish, very clever, good job guy, I an gona try this too, does every tyre have white wall under Neath the black over coating ?
I didnt know this. I wonder can you do this to any tire? they look great can i do this to my caddy i wonder. it is scary. but wide whites cost a lot and every caddy deserves them.
@MrBlueroads I've been told if it has white letters or white walls, even skinny ones, that there's a wide band of white underneath. There's several other videos on youtube telling how. I'd practice on a throw away tire first, maybe. If you go to deep you go through the white, back to black, and if you go even deeper you could pop the tire.. hahaha.
I DIG YOUR VIDEOS GREAT JOB IM BUILDING A HOTROD OUT OF A BEETLE BODY .ITS JOING TO HAVE A FRONT ENGINE ,MODEL A FRONT SUSPENSION AND SO ON.IM HAVING TROUBLE MAKING THE FRAME I HAVENT STARTED BUT AM KINA HESITANT .IN AFARID OF NOT HAVING ENOUGH PENETRATION WRONG MEASUREMENTS..I WISH U WERE MY NEIGHBOR MAN.I WOULD HELP U FROM SOME INFO OR HELP IN RETURN!
@JohnnyDesaint Yea, if we was neighbors I could help you and you could help me. I want to build something sorrt of like that for the Ugly Step Sister.
Yankee ingenuity. You keep pushing my button - LOL. When I was in HS about 1951 I worked in a tire recapping shop. The steam heated tread matrixes would turn the white wall yellow. On of my jobs was take a white rubber buffing wheel and make the whites white again. And this was before radial tires. Boss put these recaps on dirt track racing cars (i.e '34 Ford Coupes) and none ever came off. Whole lot cheaper to recap - $10-12 back then.
@sarge7934 Yea, you used to be able to get a very cool looking recap, with stiff straight ridged sides and flat across the top, like a racing slick with tread. Haven't seen any like that in years, but they sure looked good on a hot rod.
@danielwetpaint I got the idea from you. Mind didn't have edges.. Just didn't. The white went as far as I wanted to grind, and I didn't want to grind any further than I did. Thanks for the idea..
@danielwetpaint Yep, got the idea from you. Thanks. By the way, these whites didn't have edges. Far as I can tell, maybe the go all around. I never found an edge, just made one with the grinder.
It looks good so far, we did a par off the wheel they turned out ok but it looks like the best way is on wheel running. I turned my white litters inside. They rubbed the bed and started a white wall.I fixed the bed were it don`t rub anymore. Now all have to do is finish the white wall.
I could smell the rubber from here.......Only concern I have, does that weaken the side wall at all? IF not, I might just have to do something like that on my '65 F-100!
i have always heard that rubber for tires starts out white and they dye it black so maybe they do the inside white and the outside is dyed black .....????? who knows...
good job from what i hear thats an old hot rodders trick done back in the 50's-60's on hot rods and one bit of history tire makers makes most tires with the rubber over the whitewall as a cheaper solution for tires so the consumer dont have to pay a bunch of money for tires but thats the way to get the whitewalls back and no worries the rubber is so thick you wont bust a tire theres several layers in a tire including the whitewall layer
Man, that looks awesome! I looked forever and finally found myself a set of port-a-walls for my old Chevy. If I had known this was possible I would have tried it. Thanks!
I am not a white wall guy but man that looks good. better then i thought it would! I got a junk set of firestones before i get new tires I am gonna see how big there white walls are (they are raised white letter tires)
If the manufacture says its ok then go out. I'm sure when you buy the original white wall tire that they make it thicker for when they do that process. The white wall should be thick so you don't have a blow out, it's the most important part of the tire for people do to something that stupid like that.

Hey peek, I like all your videos.
Is it safe to drive those tires? Or should I try a white paint?
Cheers from Brazil !

@ZULUBRAZIL Safe? Probably not. hahahaha.. I never let that stop me before...
rpeek 10 months ago
wow those tires had a really wide white wall......what video editing program do you use? I never noticed the coke door trunk lid that is classic cool
the1onlyteagro 10 months ago
@the1onlyteagro I use Windows Movie Maker, although when I made this video, I might have still been using Sony Vegas..
rpeek 10 months ago
I didnt know this. I wonder can you do this to any tire? they look great can i do this to my caddy i wonder. it is scary. but wide whites cost a lot and every caddy deserves them.
MrBlueroads 10 months ago
@MrBlueroads I've been told if it has white letters or white walls, even skinny ones, that there's a wide band of white underneath. There's several other videos on youtube telling how. I'd practice on a throw away tire first, maybe. If you go to deep you go through the white, back to black, and if you go even deeper you could pop the tire.. hahaha.
rpeek 10 months ago
@rpeek i been looking at other vids, i got to try it thanks for all your wonderful music, art ,everything you do on here. im facinated by it all.
MrBlueroads 10 months ago
@MrBlueroads Welcome. I am just havin' fun at it all.. hahaha.

@rpeek FOR YOUR UGLY STEP SISTER?AHAHA WHAT STATE DO YOU LIVE IN?LOOKS NICE
JohnnyDesaint 1 year ago
Yankee ingenuity. You keep pushing my button - LOL. When I was in HS about 1951 I worked in a tire recapping shop. The steam heated tread matrixes would turn the white wall yellow. On of my jobs was take a white rubber buffing wheel and make the whites white again. And this was before radial tires. Boss put these recaps on dirt track racing cars (i.e '34 Ford Coupes) and none ever came off. Whole lot cheaper to recap - $10-12 back then.
sarge7934 1 year ago
@sarge7934 Yea, you used to be able to get a very cool looking recap, with stiff straight ridged sides and flat across the top, like a racing slick with tread. Haven't seen any like that in years, but they sure looked good on a hot rod.

I like that the white wall bring out the color of your rim.

@danielwetpaint I got the idea from you. Mind didn't have edges.. Just didn't. The white went as far as I wanted to grind, and I didn't want to grind any further than I did. Thanks for the idea..
rpeek 1 year ago
@danielwetpaint Yep, got the idea from you. Thanks. By the way, these whites didn't have edges. Far as I can tell, maybe the go all around. I never found an edge, just made one with the grinder.

I kept waiting for the tire to blow and see you go flying across the garage....you never cease to amaze me :-)
docsavage98 1 year ago
@docsavage98 Blowin' up a tire wasn't a problem, but it took three days to get the rubber dust outta my eyes.. hahahaha..
rpeek 1 year ago
It looks good so far, we did a par off the wheel they turned out ok but it looks like the best way is on wheel running. I turned my white litters inside. They rubbed the bed and started a white wall.I fixed the bed were it don`t rub anymore. Now all have to do is finish the white wall.
redsrat56 1 year ago
@redsrat56 Yea, I started out workin' on 'em without 'em turnin' but it worked real good with them going round, allowed me to get a nice even grind..
rpeek 1 year ago
I've seen a machine from the 1950's that lathed the sidewall down to the whitewall.
screamingcockatoo 1 year ago
@screamingcockatoo Kool! Didn't realize there was such a thing..
rpeek 1 year ago
@rpeek
AA1001 is the machine.
Alltiresupply has them, but they're expensive.
I've seen whitewall covers that you lay on the tire and it is held in by the bead.
screamingcockatoo 1 year ago
@screamingcockatoo Yep. They're called "Port a walls"... Used to be pretty common to use 'em back in the 50's..
rpeek 1 year ago
@screamingcockatoo i verry so have one. ill have to make a vid and post it to show people how it was orignally done

That thar IS HONKIN!
I could smell the rubber from here.......Only concern I have, does that weaken the side wall at all? IF not, I might just have to do something like that on my '65 F-100!
Great vid....

JeffN727 1 year ago
good job from what i hear thats an old hot rodders trick done back in the 50's-60's on hot rods and one bit of history tire makers makes most tires with the rubber over the whitewall as a cheaper solution for tires so the consumer dont have to pay a bunch of money for tires but thats the way to get the whitewalls back and no worries the rubber is so thick you wont bust a tire theres several layers in a tire including the whitewall layer
