Hi guy, I need a little favor to ask. Could you send me some pictures of this conversion? I have a nice looking W111 (220Sb) and I would like to swap the engine and use OM617 with auto... the same deal you got there. Did you use original differential (rear end)? My email is emirarijana(at)gmail(dot)com.
The car sits straight without any modifications to the suspension so I didn't do anything.. The diesel is a 5-cyl engine, vs. the old 6-cyl gasser, thought the weight would be about the same. This video was the first run with driveshaft only spot welded for measurement, hence the slow speed.. You can hear the shaft slapping around :)
I've seen several W111's around here (Scandinavia) with those signals, maybe it was a regional thing? Really don't know..
Many reasons for conversion, original engine was toast (worn, cooked and bent), found a cheap diesel engine, fuel economy, wanted to try veggie oil, I like the simplicity of diesels etc. Glad to hear your engine is humming, those are very nice engines when working properly! Just recently pulled and sold a 280SE 69' engine, looked fine but wasn't meant for me. :)
I never drove this car with the M180, it was running on only 5 cyls when I bought it and overheated badly on the trip home. Car has original 4.07 rear end and 13 inch wheels, tops laughable 60mph now but I have a spare 3-something 108-axle and 14 inch wheels I intend to swap on later. Quick on the red lights now, though :)
My car has the original 13" wheels too, but as it is the more powerful FI version it is able to keep up with traffic and can drive for hours at 75mph. I must drive it more, now it is cold here and I do not expose the car to harsh weather. I see the car in the video also has the USA style lights, were these for scandinavia too?
Both the W115 and W116 was available with OM617. W115 as W115.114, the 75-76 "240D 3.0", and the W116 as the "300SD".. they are NOT common finds these days but are easy to convert since the OM617 was available in them from factory.
That would be quite easy. The W115 was available with OM617 from factory, as the "240D 3.0", 75-76. The W116 was also available with the clattermachine, as "300SD", don't know what years but around 1980.
Yeah i read my post here the other day, aparantly I got mixed up on the chassis numbers. The w116 was already turbo dieseled, the w115 is a NA which I would love in turbo. I was thinking w114 too, not w116. I really like the w114 and w115.
What year Cadillac??? 1984??

Very nice, I too have a fintail, a 220SE.
Did the front suspension need to be modified for the extra weight of the diesel engine?

Ah yes I hear that?
Are those sidemounted turn signals from a W110?
Was there a benefit to the conversion other than economy? The gas engine in my W111 runs very well, but it is the FI model, so no carbs to mess with.

How is the performance compared to the M180? Is the speed similar? The torque must be better, the old MB I6 do not have much torque.

What was involved in converting to diesel? I've got access to a '70 280SE that I'd like to do the same to.
